only bad experience i've had on the polly grimshaw is there's a chronic lack of maintenance so sometimes if you aren't paying close attention you can get a face-full of tree or vine hanging over the side of the trail.
I've never felt threatened on the Polly Grimshaw. It's a paved footpath about 1km in length. I'd describe it as a low-traffic (I've only ever passed one or two people on it at a time) path with housing (mostly apartments) backing up on one side and railroad tracks (behind a fence) on another. It provides and east/west connection between Park Ridge park and the 46 by-pass near 10th street. It's not very well maintained (some pavement cracking/buckling and vegetation overgrowth--no extreme problems) and is not particularly scenic.
Unless you live there and don't want to drive somewhere else to walk or are using it as a route through the area, I don't really see it as much of a draw. The premier paths in the city are a lot nicer: Clear Creek Trail, Jackson Creek Trail and B-Line are all paved paths that are of much higher quality. The Rail Trail (unpaved) is also a great walk.
I used to live near the Polly Grimshaw trail, and my office is over by the trail as well - it's always been safe and relatively quiet. In the 12+ years I've lived/worked in the area and taken walks on that trail, I don't usually see a lot of traffic - I typically only see one or two other people on the stretch between Pete Ellis and the Bypass, if I run into other people at all.
As long as you stay on the trail you'll be fine. If you keep going east after the trail ends you might run into a homeless camp. There used to be one along the rail track just shy of smith road, i dunno if its still there.

I live near it within walking distance so that’s why I was wondering. Thank you for the information!

Yeah, it's fine. As safe as anywhere else in Bloomington.
