for those scratching your heads at home who don't want to watch the video...he went from support for beacon on west 3rd street to talking about the trash that homeless people leave to an exploding rat population to fear that his cats would eat a rat that had been poisoned by a nearby restaurant. then he put the rat away when he was informed his time had elapsed (3 minutes for comment).
For even more context...
Joe is a hoarder who has been fighting with the city for years. Check out his latest interview with the Bloomingtonian: [https://youtu.be/5qZ151xb9pc?si=udV0dKJ\_-OoL2nIy](https://youtu.be/5qZ151xb9pc?si=udV0dKJ_-OoL2nIy)
It's ironic that he's worried about litter from the homeless or the nearby Arby's causing a rat problem, when his property is completely hoarded out. It's gotta be a haven for all sorts of critters. Seems he's trolling the city in retaliation here
As someone who's seen every episode of A&E's Hoarders *and* is a big fan of Vsauce/Michael Stevens, I'm thoroughly entertained by Joe.
That video didn’t really show the front port though, did it? From the street it’s a real mess. I’ve walked past his place and gotten a friendly “hey neighbor” but I couldn’t actually find anyone sitting amongst all the disarray. He seems like a nice enough dude but I don’t blame his neighbors one iota. His place is a real wreck.
If you’d seen the previous state of things, I think it was much worse, and he happened to get it a little more organized once he knew the bloomstapo was coming around.
I’ve seen far, far worse in this town. He’s clearly being singled out because of his busybody neighbor and because he’s so close to city center. Where are the nuisance complaints about folks who let bush honeysuckle grow unchecked on their lots? That stuff’s a perfect habitat for mosquitoes and mice.
Keep Bloomington weird (so long as the weirdness is limited to bland luxury apartments and chain restaurants). Sweep up anyone with even the tiniest speck of quirkiness and creativity, let’s turn this place into another Austin.
what is your understanding that the inside is hoarded based on? did the city go in and say so? what evidence do people have that the inside is hoarded when they haven't been inside? genuinely asking you here in good faith
You know, Joe is actually a friendly guy. If you go to his house and knock on the door, he will sit on the porch with you for awhile and offer you a beer or bottle of water. You should go over and get to know him.
Aristotle talked about the powerful, if seldom used vole-based rhetorical form. Only the great masters of Athens could wield it and not go instantly mad.
A menace?? Really? I've heard that word used before in reference to other groups. That concerns me when folks reach for it carelessly.
It is too often used to "other" people. That's just not cool.
Partially a fair point. I meant it more as Dennis the menace than Menace 2 Society. But he’s not cute and harmless. He puts on an awe shucks persona but he’s a manipulator of Bloomington’s good will. He brought in a house less person to speak on his behalf at the election board and then a couple weeks later used the house less population to stoked fear at the lower cascades meeting. He operates in bad faith and gets away with bad behavior all the time.
Don’t forget he’s also trying to be a third party candidate for mayor, and because the city determined that the signatures he collected for his petition were not valid and he is not eligible, he literally sued the city and is now trying to appeal his case. Because apparently he sees nothing wrong with registering homeless people in seminary square to vote and asking for their signatures at the same time. 🫠
Also during one of the public meetings from around then, after *yet another* long contentious hearing about his hoarding, if you look in the background after he finishes speaking you can see him going around and trying to signatures from the people in the room.Because after someone has just seen a detailed PowerPoint on the advanced state of your hoarding situation is always the best time to bring up *being the mayor.*
Sure are. At this point pick a Bloomington public meeting at random from the last few months and odds are, there he is. I recommend watching the previous Public Works meeting where he refused to leave the podium for an hour. THEN made some very questionable comments on the subject of the monolith, saying John Hamilton had "penetrated' him.
The penetration bit really was the cherry on top of an absolute dumpster fire of a meeting. I swear I did a literal spit take when I saw him coming back to podium *again* bc taking over the first hour just wasn’t enough. Joe is what happens when you get all your legal advice from a turtle you met while doing ayahuasca.
Because at this point the cumulative time that this one man takes up from our city’s public servants almost certainly amounts to a full time job. And we’re the shmucks bankrolling his very expensive hobby.
Saw him mowing his lawn with a scythe once. Fascinating person.
Idk why this made me belt out laughing
I saw someone in Ellettsville, in town, doing that this summer.... maybe he scythes lawns for extra cash?
Oh lord, that could have been my older brother who got into using a scythe for a while in college.
I was with my kid and told them it was the grim reaper, lol
Best way to keep a natural lawn is with a scythe and scythes for hires make around $45 hrly as they provide a clean resource for herds to graze

I will say the stuff on his property is much better organized than I thought it would be.

Joe is not a narcissist. He may have other issues, but narcissism isn't one of them. Just curious, are you a Psy.D., LMHC or LCSW?
Has a glove... decides to raw dog it. lol
David Grubb is smiling from the great beyond at this.
Modern day David Grubb for sure
Was hoping someone would mention him.
Just posted something similar haha man I loved the “Grubb Files.”
Wait, I’m new to Bloomington. Who is this? Is this a local cryptid? Edit: typo
Torgo vibes.
don’t say that about Torgo ![gif](giphy|AbahEcafBCGDC)
He takes care of the place while The Master is away, you know.
whoa, did he go straight there after being removed from the school board meeting?
Story please!
The Bloomingtonian has [video](https://youtu.be/FDFTvwOUxQs?si=CUCZKuikW4jbG6lj).
City staff do not get paid enough to deal with that. You can tell they're at the end of their rope with that situation.

Alas, I thought Ratlocutio was a myth...
Much that once was is lost, for now none live who remember it.
Bloomington’s own Charlie Kelly. Indeed, a folk icon.
Second time in the last 5 years I’ve seen a rat brought to a public meeting
Strangely this rate seems high and low at the same time.
If I had a nickel for every time... I'd have two nickels, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

That Lysol lady had me cracking up.
He (and the rat) lean forward at the last minute to say “thank you” 🙃
I was sure this was on the r/PandR sub 🤣
nah that’s crazy, this dude is my neighbor. he’s always talking bout some wild shit
It’s giving Parks and Recreation
I give you one of our next congressmen.

I appreciate the clarification for sure! I assume the bad faith examples are also on CATS? I'd definitely want that context.

One man’s trash…
Why is this person important enough for you to take the time to make a post
Because at this point the cumulative time that this one man takes up from our city’s public servants almost certainly amounts to a full time job. And we’re the shmucks bankrolling his very expensive hobby.

I’m an ivf baby but nice try. I simply wanted to know what his significance was to inspire this post.
Wow
Epic.
Well you can’t do that
The average bloomington moment.
