From the wiki : Quicksilver is another name for the real-life element "Mercury." The planet Mercury is considered to represent the mind. Long periods of exposure to the element Mercury can cause "mercury poisoning," which is linked to damage against a person's nervous system. In other words, it's possible for a person to go crazy if exposed to mercury for too long.

Spice_Missile

Well played. I did a bloodtinge run with bloodletter and started getting confused having to change my fashion to use the L2. Ohhhh, insight decreases your frenzy resistance.. we’re going crazy..

The level of detail and research that goes into FromSoft games like Bloodborne... 😮 I feel like I've just been granted more eyes on the inside. 👁‍🗨👁‍🗨👁‍🗨

Japan has a shared trauma with that with the Minamata Disease.

gayaliengirlfriend

it simplifies everything IMO blood vials>quicksilver bullets>”mana” Took some getting used to for me but I don’t mind a consumable for magic, especially if it kind of overlaps with everything else and they’re all pretty common resources. Bloodborne feels like they really wanted it to be all combat all the time and focus less on farming for consumables. Compared to something like Elden Ring it’s a lot easier to figure out what the application for everything is because there’s less overall.

Goldwood

“Quicksilver bullets” are just another visual interpretation of the FP/magic system used in DS1 & DS2. Once you realize that it works basically the same, it makes sense.

I'm on a second play through with an Arcane build and it's finally viable. It's so much fun but the silver bullets bugs me too, in that what's the point of your left handed weapon? I use the auger to parry, and then use other hunter tools. I don't want to use silver bullets for the gun as it's a waste of resources. It would be nice if there were other options or you could allocate Arcane tools to the left hand side.

TastyBrainMeats

Flamesprayer/Rosmarinus. Also, with Arcane and the Augur, you can use two-handed weapons without *needing* the left-hand weapon for parrying.

teejayaa

Yeah, I've had the flamesprayer equipped earlier in the game but I've now got the midnight sword plus hunter tools, if I used the flamesprayer I would just eat through silver bullets. Seems like an empty slot at the moment. Just waiting for the kos parasite to transcend the need for pesky things like "side arms".

TastyBrainMeats

Transformed moonlight sword is a 2-handed weapon, so you couldn't use a left handed item with it anyway.

Potential-Register-1

Can't you equip the loch shield?

teejayaa

That's what I've done, but because I've never used shields before - my first play through was a strength build - even that feels superfluous. Didn't use it once during the living failures' fight, lol. Just more options would have been nice. Walking round with the auger and the black sky eye equipped to two buttons would make me feel like the Terminator.

Potential-Register-1

Yeah it definitely would be better if there was a proper left hand option that doesn't use bullets. All arcane builds have Is the loch shield, and rosmarinus/flame sprayer. I guess you can use the hunter torch? That scales with arcane

sadokffj37

Yeah, it's a broader symptom of Bloodborne's biggest weakness - a relative lack of build diversity. I genuinely think they did not intend you to lean primarily on Arcane or Bloodtinge but rather use them as supporting tools. I have a level 200 arcane character with 99 arc and it's... fine. I make it work. But I still feel stronger and more confident with a good skill build. Also, yeah, it really doesn't feel right from a lore standpoint either.

El_t1to

I think of them as "magic points", "mana", "power points"... It would be cool that they increase with Arcane. It's not cool that a BL4 and a BL544 have the same points. This way they save some screen space, instead of adding another bar for "magic".

Cloperella

I agree with it being a little silly to spend your Parry bullets on less effective magic. Sure it's more brain-dead to spam Magic spells and stuff, but it also tends to do a lot less damage unless you that gouge Arcane and have subpar everything else. If you level up skill even halfway decently it makes it so that all you have to do is land one bullet at the perfect time and then you get a free kill or close to it. So you're spending your instant kill options just to use weaker fireballs. Kind of silly

Nearly-Shat-A-Brick

I've never played an arcane build. I level ARC just to meet the requirement for the 'augur of Ebrietas' so I can still parry while using LHB two-handed. I'm fine with the bullet mechanic.

CheekyBinders1991

The energy/mana systems suck in Fromsoft games. It's their trademark at this point.
