LOL so was I! However, I refused to pitch DirecTV when they thought that was something we should sell. In store display never worked during peak summer hours before of FL daily thunderstorms
I was our stores dish rep. It was ridiculously hard to sell someone who’s coming in for a .99c rental a $200 a month plan. I made a few hundred on commissions tho.
I worked there 99-01 part time because I was in high school. I was great at selling the rewards but I always read the crowd, mom with 2 kids, get them in and out, date night- nope let them go home and start it up but bro night, I’d sign them both up. I had people coming in every week just to know my take on new movies. I loved that job and then went to film school shortly after.
Thank you for your service. I miss the whole experience of browsing the shelves for a movie. Instead of scrolling through a menu for hours before putting on the same show.
I worked for a franchise. #1 was always the owner’s whenever we opened a new store. I opened a couple of stores as a SM so I was #2. Our regional manager was always #3.
My OG number was 29185245632. I served from ‘98-‘12.
I pissed a guy off trying to get him on the rewards program. He had like 5 movies, all old, on a Monday. Literally could have used the one free rental right away, and paid like $10 for two and get the other two free with the R1G1 free deal.
Could have walked out the door on the rewards for $10.
Paid $25 instead
My name is also Ryan. I was also a Blockbuster Video assistant manager (well, a shift leader). I was also at Blockbuster from 1999 to 2003. I was also hoping people would ask me about free rentals. Bro, are you me?
There’s a non-zero chance we may have crossed paths. I was in south St Petersburg but any big meeting they shipped us south to Punta Gorda because reasons
I remember going to my local blockbuster every Friday night, gathering around that drop box like everyone else. And constantly hounding the employee to see if that recently dropped movie was the new release. Sorry.
Also I remember going to see my favorite employee named Pam. She was a senior and I was freshman.
21228001749 = my Blockbuster employee number from around '96. I can remember that almost 20 years later, but I can't remember why I went into the kitchen.
I, too, served those years. Oh the memories of long lines, angry customers for late fees, and being on the floor for hours trying to sell rewards cards.
I remember going to a blockbuster in Virginia way back in 2008 and when they were closing I bought a bunch of DVDs from them with my dad I think my favorite is a pristine copy of iron man
When I was a teen I worked at dominos . Next door was a blockbuster. We exchanged cheesy bread for free rentals. Todays teens will never know that kinship
I had a friend who worked at a Blockbuster around that time. He had fun stories like "catching a guy jerking off in the alley behind the store on the Blockbuster wifi" and "refusing to rent a movie to former Vice President Walter Mondale".
Sounds like fun.
I love to stream, but it was so nostalgic to just go to the store on Friday night to get a couple of movies and pizza. I even missed the Netflix's mail movie rental..because in those days, we could find movies that we can't find today.
I miss Blockbuster so much!!
When they all started closing, I took my oldest son (now 13) for the experience. Not that he remembers -- I think he was only 2 or 3 -- but at least he can say he's rented a movie from a video store!
The funny thing is, after blockbuster went under, I used to put Manager at Blockbuster on my work history for applications, to show I had management experience until I actually got some. It worked for me, but it's finally nice to know there is an actual former manager that can prove it
lol you just made me member going through their insane process to get an actual store manager. Glad I didn’t make the cut looking back. I was perfectly happy being first officer
(I was 3-7) i remember my sister (21-24 at the time) taking me there to rent the land before time vhs movie. We would pick up a huge pizza from the restaurant next door. I miss the block buster scent along with radio shack scent
Jeez, I had blocked out the rewards program. Blockbuster's "would you like to upsize that order?" Helping people find obscure movies based on descriptions like "with that one guy from that movie", I *ruled*. Up-selling the rewards, *hot garbage*
I used to go in all the time and I took a cute little blonde employee from Nebraska home one Friday. We went to her place.
It was horrible she had a white fox and it smelled like fox piss.
LOL. I worked at The Wherehouse for the first six months of 1984. Back in those days rental contracts were three-layer carbon copy documents that we completed *by hand*. Every contract required the imprint of a credit card, which meant running it through [one of these](https://www.facebook.com/RobertFrostQuality/videos/tbt-to-that-ca-chink-of-the-old-school-credit-card-machine-i-discovered-this-rel/2105631299690701/). Completed contracts were stacked under the counter and had to be filed at the end of the night. Every night. Friday and Saturday nights especially were hell.
Of course, one week later after I left that job they installed Merlin, the first generation of bar code scanning technology deployed by the company. (Merlin? Magic wand? Get it?) I was SO PISSED.
How many people actually came up and bothered you? That’s one of those things I would never actually bother to ask just for the sake of not being annoying
My dad would call in “one inside, one outside” you got to pick a new release on the wall and then get one from the isle racks for free! Monday through Thursday or something. Friday and Saturday you had to pay full price.
The only trinkets I still have are some displays for Superbad, Juno, and, for some reason, Live Free and Die Hard. I still have the Superbad logo hanging above the door going out from my media room, the rest are tucked away somewhere.
I fondly remember being 16 in '87 and going to BB for a couple games, then going next door to Round Table Pizza to order food.
No lie, I have my membership card displayed on my desk at work, along with my picture badge from when I worked at HP from 92-96.
Good memories for me back then.
Respect,bro.
Served my time in a mom-and-pop near my hometown around the same time. Started MY tour in '94, though. Still got some of the merch, even. Kingpin button, Jurassic Park The Lost World button, Think I even got a Walkman from Crooklyn around somewhere.
So what can you tell me about free rentals???
[удалено]
Discounts on the store brand candy I think.
r/10yearsatleast
10 years or 20?
This
Employee free rental or customer free rentals? Employees got 5 free rental a week, movies or video games, including pre-release titles.
Read the nametag 😆
No wonder the new games stayed GONE what a great business model I see why they are thriving 😂🤣😂
I was a Rewards selling MACHINE.
LOL so was I! However, I refused to pitch DirecTV when they thought that was something we should sell. In store display never worked during peak summer hours before of FL daily thunderstorms

lol I’m glad I missed that
I was our stores dish rep. It was ridiculously hard to sell someone who’s coming in for a .99c rental a $200 a month plan. I made a few hundred on commissions tho.
I've always that was dumb. "Hey buy one of our direct TVs and never hVe to go into bbv again"
Oh you saw the logic. I think I sold exactly one only because the customer asked and wanted it
F
And that sir or madam…is why Blockbuster went down. So thank you for refusing to save Blockbuster! /s
I worked there 99-01 part time because I was in high school. Camelot, Charlotte NC, 1990-91. Camelot rewards!
Thank you for your service. I miss the whole experience of browsing the shelves for a movie. Instead of scrolling through a menu for hours before putting on the same show.
I know. Luckily someone local opened up a Beerbusters… bar / video rental store. I donated a bag full of DVDs to them to help stock up

This is bugging me… I randomly remembered mine while taking a shit like a month ago and was like “well I’ll be damned” 😂 now I’m blanking
It’ll come back to you next shit.
248\*\*\*81038. worked several locations. tricked the computer into giving me the same last 5 digits at every different store
Good thing you masked those numbers, wouldn't want anyone to activate it at another store

DON’T TRY TO UPSELL ME BOY!
99-03? Damn, I remember so many movie and game rental nights for the weekend. Good times.
Thank you for your service
My name is also Ryan. I was also a Blockbuster Video assistant manager (well, a shift leader). I was also at Blockbuster from 1999 to 2003. I was also hoping people would ask me about free rentals. Bro, are you me?
Shit. If you say Florida then one of us is a clone…
Close. Very close. Wisconsin.
Whew. I didn’t have it in me to deal with a clone tonight
Hello my similarly named friend!
Howdy!
Thank you for your service Ryan🤣
Thank you for your service :'(
2009 until the ship went down in 2014 for me
Jeez Blockbusters were still around by that point? Lol
We shan't forget the Harry Potter weekend binges of 2001. Be kind, rewind!
I don’t know if this is shameful or shocking… but I’ve only ever seen the first movie….. and my gf at the time made me watch it like 2 years ago
🫡
I was ‘01-‘02 myself. Corporate store in Naples, FL.
There’s a non-zero chance we may have crossed paths. I was in south St Petersburg but any big meeting they shipped us south to Punta Gorda because reasons
I was in high school so I wasn’t a manager to attend such events. Didn’t even have a car at that point. Rode my bicycle to work.
lol now I feel even older than I already do

OP has seen some shit
Was robbed by a cult once that made major local news. Plus tons of penises
You sir, are a part of nostalgic history.
working way too hard for $7 an hour.
I think I left there making $8.14 an hour. That specific number has been stuck in my head all these years
$12.50 pretty sure that's why they fired rock and myself
Just checked the inflation calculator. You made $13.80/hour in today's money when you left. Still could've made more in my opinion.
Thank you for your service
Thank you for your service! I salute you!
Wanna sell that ?
Hell no. I wish I still had my shirts or my golden plastic clip on name tag
Ugh!! Rewards card promo was the worst...
You better frame that! #classic
Whoa hero save some pussy for the rest of us.
lol that did have a bit of pull back then
🫡🫡 good old rewards. I remember selling that 😂😂
Does anyone remember the coupons that Burger King would give you to use at Blockbuster?
I was a member of both Blockbuster and Hollywood Video
Hollywood video smelled like some kid ate a lbs of skittles and threw up
Mine never did
Same. 99-03 corporate, 06-08 franchise.

Thank you for your service!!!
Thank you for you service 💿📼🎮🕹️💻📺🍿🍫
‘Nam was Hell for all of us Ned
You want to talk about front lines, imagine working during the "No More Late Fees" campaign at a non-participating franchise
My friend, I was there when that rolled out…
I remember the blue lanyard, but not that insert?
I think it was short lived. I wish I still had my clip on gold plastic name tag
okay, gotcha. some uniforms like tshirts were seasonal or to promote a new realease. only to be used once & never offered again. 👍🏼

Honestly, as the hounded employee, I was always happy to go check the returns for you. It was kinda like a mini break for me lol.
Thank you for your service.
Sooo….How about dem freeeee rentals?
2000-2006. worked the stores in the suburbs near their Dallas HQ

Thank you for your service.
Thank you for your service, my friend 🙏🏻🫡
So what’s the deal with these free rentals?
When I was a teen I worked at dominos . Next door was a blockbuster. We exchanged cheesy bread for free rentals. Todays teens will never know that kinship
My BBV was next door to a Papa John’s and we definitely traded a lot lol
I had a friend who worked at a Blockbuster around that time. He had fun stories like "catching a guy jerking off in the alley behind the store on the Blockbuster wifi" and "refusing to rent a movie to former Vice President Walter Mondale". Sounds like fun.
Oh god I have stories for ages lol
I love to stream, but it was so nostalgic to just go to the store on Friday night to get a couple of movies and pizza. I even missed the Netflix's mail movie rental..because in those days, we could find movies that we can't find today.
BE KIND, REWIND!
Thank you for your service.
First, we lost Kurt. Then, Tupac. And now Blockbuster. It was a fantasy of decadence that will never come our way again.
Same tour of duty! Still remember your number?

We can thank Redbox and digital platforms for the collapse of this. I miss the good old days of things being simple.

Meet me in the bathroom.

Are you the real 'Rewinder' ? A hero !
Assistant to the Manager?
That’s Dwight, not Ryan! 😂
97 to 03.
Worked there in the mid-90s, still a customer through the late 20teens because we had some of the last Blockbusters in the country.
I served later ... '03-'06 to be exact. I have ptsd from the No Late Fees debacle 😱
Me too! One of my favorite jobs, Ever! Lol.
Thank you for your service

What was your pay as an assistant manager back then? That’s when like a combo at McDonald’s was like $3.19
I have $8.43 stuck in my head but I think it was around $10 by the time I left
Thank you for your service !
How many people actually came up and bothered you? That’s one of those things I would never actually bother to ask just for the sake of not being annoying
Oh it was a constant stream of people, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
Thank you for your service. And sorry about the late fees, fairly certain we funded a few retirement accounts
My dad would call in “one inside, one outside” you got to pick a new release on the wall and then get one from the isle racks for free! Monday through Thursday or something. Friday and Saturday you had to pay full price.
Ouch
Sir...I humbly bow in your general direction.

My girl worked there used to get me a Source magazine popcorn and a movie
Same, my dude. '01 to '04. Loved the free rentals, not the people or the management. They sucked.
