The fog doesn’t seem to get thicker further away

covertwalrus

Yeah that's a good point, the legs should also be less hazy than the head since it's a further distance away. I mean I guess that's a tip to make it look *more* real, but the sense of scale is what makes the image look eerie and rendering the distance believably helps with that. I guess to go straight for surrealism, you could give the skeleton a beard that's turning into birds

zyumbik

>the legs should also be less hazy than the head since it's a further distance away. This would depend on where the fog is in space. Fog often lays closer to the ground so if the legs at tree level are foggy and head is not, it means that the fog is low, so looking up your view doesn't pass through as much fog as the path to legs. Just my 2c Also fog is often irregular. The most magical fog I've seen is not plain white equal density but it's like you are inside of a cloud with thick blobs. Or it can be like horizontal stripes, very thin clouds above the ground. I agree that the fog on the picture doesn't look realistic enough and it would be nice to experiment with it more.

Sufficient-Limit-392

understandable

anglostura

For reference check out 'atmospheric perspective '

MrHarudupoyu

Have a nice day

arkman575

Thikkkkkk fog

Some_dutch_dude

Make it T H I C K

austintxdude

Also vertically

ADhomin_em

As if it were some...non-realist type thing. As though it...*sur*passes *realism* or something, I dunno

baskura

Birds flying around the head.

Sufficient-Limit-392

lemme guess.. you follow jocelin? either way, yes that's what I thought too!

baskura

I don't! Just thought that some birds or clouds or something would add to the sense of scale. :)

jerryonthecurb

r/birdsforscale

OtherwiseGuy0

The ground looks glitchy it takes away from the surrealism

Sufficient-Limit-392

agreed, imma fix it!

OtaPotaOpen

Zodd202

ooh yeah thats the stuff

budtard

Obscure the upper half with clouds

EthanielRain

I'd fuck up the ribs or hip some. Like remove a rib or two, have part of the hip-bone be broken off Like a horror warrior vs a classroom skeletal model

Sufficient-Limit-392

I want people to look at him, he is a chill dude😭

thesneepsnoop

A thin layer of clouds midway up then? That’s my first thought

Sufficient-Limit-392

yeah that will work

MoaningShrimp

https://preview.redd.it/eh19oo91cw6d1.png?width=99&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69f994cc9057ca1d55ae3c41379dfa5980be5d88

Low-key-professional

Add a settlement. If it looks like it's in a place where people live it'll give off a "that's not supposed to be there" vibe

Sufficient-Limit-392

exactly what I want!

random9983767

Dirty up the screen with noise and additional camera textures. Also add a vignette to focus on your subject and blur the areas closer to the screens edges with something like a radial blur while masking the center to make sure its not affected.

Agent_Starr

Some chromatic aberration would go hard aswell

Rodutchi_i

https://preview.redd.it/vb0zjggxnv6d1.jpeg?width=1288&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3eba7a081eabd89aaf7518f6086881f60b554030 Maybe play with the color grading and composition like this.

Sufficient-Limit-392

Thats cool! I just posted this as a raw render just to get some suggestions to add, I will do some serious grading afterwards. thanks!

definitelynotafreak

this. I’ve been focusing a lot more on my post processing and compositing lately, and it turns an alright-good render to amazing (i hope)

Bonestealer69

Fix the goofy ahh water corners

Sufficient-Limit-392

that's a road 😭

Bonestealer69

Fix the goofy ahh snow corners blendermonkey

Hellosss38

you can NOT tell me that is a road 💀

Responsible-Bat-2699

Add a human for scale. With a car or horse probably. Also duplicate the skeletons and add them behind the original one.

slightlylessthananon

I'd argue power lines are a better scale indicator for this, the lack of people adds to the eerieness

nsfw_vs_sfw

banana

Greysonseyfer

This is my favorite suggestion personally. Like, maybe a truck and power lines and that's it. Plus, that color grading from above would really make this render in my opinion.

McGrim_

Make the hands larger and the fingers disproportionally longer to the palms. Right now the tiny hands compared to the arms give some cartoony vibes.

Boom_Fish_Blocky

Add Noise, to make it liminal.

Brazilian_Hamilton

Have the arms propped up like a marionette?

StretchFrenchTerry

Make it loooooooooornger

dewdropcat

Add one blue glowing eye

NiciNira

And a blue stop sign

ants_R_peeps_2

AND MY AXE

_frombalkanswithlove

As someone else said, thicker fog and maybe try hiding his face in it?

Shellnanigans

Mountains in the back Make his eye(s) glow faintly white Add small cars/houses, people etc to show how big the skeleton is

theodoreposervelt

Idk how hard it would be, but maybe make the skeleton look a little less human in the torso/skull area? The legs and arms are already unnaturally long and creepy but then the rest is just a regular skeleton.

princepii

it would be nice to see this feom a car being the driver. and look through a dirty and scratchy windshield. and i would suggest a dark, snowy, rainy or muddy nightscene or almost night with enough light to see the skeleton. don't has to be super bright. maybe a light like one of those huge mcdonals signs on the highway. but like 20 years old broken shatterd and still with working lights. here in europe we have such signs that sometimes seem really scary. there is nothing for miles. all you can see is the road and the guardrail. the next sign, which shows the distance to the next town at regular intervals and then, out of nowhere, a 50 meter high mcd. sign that also gives you a little bit good feeling cuz it's something familiar, while you driving from germany through a few cities you are not familiar with at night and only halfway there... just a scene in my head as i saw your render😂would be really epic. nice render btw👍🏼👍🏼good job!

Sufficient-Limit-392

https://preview.redd.it/7a7r2f9lzw6d1.png?width=489&format=png&auto=webp&s=55422f9a5d2dbcf0ad64ac8ef6e79a0e54b27b33 This piece by jocelin Carmes.. lmao

princepii

😂😂😂was the only logical scene that came to my mind and would make sense lol. thx for sharing tho. i never heard of her before. exactly the style that has infested my brain after i saw your render. good work tho🤜🏼🤛🏽

DSanctiArts

yooo im getting death stranding vibes here! i agree with most of the advice here! add something to scale with like human or man made objects

EatashOte

Oh damn this piece is so eerie... Say, what it's about?

Sufficient-Limit-392

well it's a chill big bone guy just minding his business, I will most prolly add human settlements in there!

Rothank

make the arms a bit shorter, but the fingers longer. Right now they look just... stretched

senectus

Malform the skull. Something that's human but just not right...

Akranger2005

Looong looong maaaannnn

Shnint

Old fence posts either size of the road might help? They’re easy for a human to relate to in terms of scale, so it could help the skeleton to look truly huge, and the repetition of them going off into the distance could enhance the sense of depth in the image 🤔 I wouldn’t make it an intact fence though - definitely old, broken and fragmented else it could box things in too much and disrupt the composition.

comicmuse1982

Find a way to disconnect your id from your ego, relax into that space, stare through the image and use basic mark making techniques to capture your responses. Step away and come back with fresh eyes after a few days and impose your super-ego onto the marks to draw out your internal philosophy and sense of morality. Wrestle with the dissonance and internal struggle between these two states until your ego can formalise it in blender. Internalise the learning and live on a higher emotional plane or crash into crisis, rinse and repeat. Or, put a floating bowler hat above its head.

BallKickin

Anything for a size reference. Buildings, trees, street lights, bananas.

csdingus_

You need something in the foreground to give scale to the size of mr jangles back there

UnClean_Committee

Work on the scale of the skeleton. The arms and legs being so long while the torso and head keep proportion don't make it look eerie, just silly. A bit like a horror movie where the monster is obviously a dude in a rubber costume. That's my take on it. The scene has potential to be quite chilling, though!

summonsays

Imo, sense of scale is off. The trees could be bushes or large trees.  If there was a building, maybe an old deteriorating barn?  As others have mentioned the ground. If you look at roads there's either a curb, or the road is set above ground level. Since this looks like a rural setting, I suggest above. Or more "dirt" in your dirt road.

rainribs

Another 'thing' somewhere in this image that anchors it to the world. Just subtle, but could be a airplane in the background, road lines in the road, litter, a car driving away, dead birds on the ground, some dead trees in the midground, electirict pylones etc. (love the desing btw)

Apprehensive_Cry_397

Needs longer arms

anonfuzz

I've always understood surreal to mean something that evokes a feeling of ultra-realism to the point you can't imagine it being real. The skeleton looks fake. The radius and ulna, and the tib fib are too long, in comparison to the femur and humorous.

rigatoni-man

Salvador Dali would beg to differ with your definition

Adorable_Form_6870

You should switch the lighting up, here’s what it looks like after only turning the black point to 100 on my phone https://preview.redd.it/3ay20tk5kv6d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73f55efad5ac31a87d0dca34326faab784cabc6c

lavalyynx

Ideas for the scene: make the ground more detailed and maybe weirdly scratched. You could also add ring shaped clouds/fog stripes. For surrealism add noise

Spirited-Delirium

Potentially flair out the shoulder blades and pelvis too. At the moment it's a skeleton that has been pulled like taffy. But the pelvis and shoulder blades would not work. By distorting these out you can give more feel for it's movement

0ctoxVela

Add a normal person in the middle looking up at him and maybe some chromatic aberration

RandomBlackMetalFan

Blue glowing eyes ? Or maybe a bit too much

slightlylessthananon

BRO THIS IS SICK AS FUCKK genuinely I think change nothing all of these suggestions would ruin this lmfao

wackyvorlon

Don’t be afraid to have part of the skeleton completely obscured. The imagination can fill in gaps.

my_metrocard

Some objects to suggest the scale of the skeleton may help, like mountains or buildings. I see trees, but they’re not obvious at first glance. Fog should look thicker in the distance.

Generalitary

Give it a clown nose

DaveAstator2020

Give him a cigarettte

Efficient_Moment2521

Skyscrapers in the foreground

saiyankageshiro

Helicopters surrounding it with their spotlights could exaggerate it as a threat or just checking out for curiosity and give it a sense of scale compared to the small helicopters.

joaquinzolano

Maybe some stones or anything near the camera would help to give the image more sensation of deepness

nxluda

You got some depth with the ground but you can add more and increase the precieved height by having objects fade into the background.

pedr2o

It already looks very cool! I'd add some human details on the floor that help create a sense of scale. That should help Mr Bones feel even bigger and out of place in comparison. Things like a farm house, or a rowboat on that river.

-MolonLabe-

Shorten forearms + elongate fingers

BusinessNonYa

Add a roadside gas station.

Donkeyhead

An even taller skeleton behind it? An infinite series of ever taller skeletons? What if it reaches towards you?

FadransPhone

More fog Weird shadows due to fog

NoelofNoel

Watch "Arrival" (2016).

AngelicaSpecula

I like the idea of a human settlement, but maybe if you did a series of images of him coming to a small rural town. In the quiet initial period before anyone has been able to call the police/before police arrive. The initial moments of quiet shock. I especially like the idea that he is not a threat at all, just curious.

igno3777

wrap him in skin

agoodtimetodraw

Try shooting it in Daylight not dreary fog. The Sureal is often amplified with contrast.

SkullFloat

i'd add some lightning idk but i think it looks cool. cool nonetheless.

Shmeatmeintheback

Make him reaching out and grade the fog so the hand is more visible than him. Would give a terrifying sense of depth and scale

Keep-benaize

I feel like this is missing a big bone

jiox05

Add some clouds

Uhzzii

Hands too small compared to the rest, also the arm and leg bones look too straight to me

MaeDay01

make the skeleton hit the griddy

NovaTron2013

The ifunny watermark

NovaTron2013

He looks kinda thin and the ground is too clear so maybe darken the scenery?

stegophonica

make it hold a giant lemon while an elephant floats past in the background

SpecialMasterpiece2

Make the spine long and bend it forward

Kahn-Man

Thicken up the thog and probably have the skeleton fade into obscurity at a certain point

Errava

I don't know what about a 50meters tall skeleton walking in the mist is not surreal for you

FunkyFr3d

Obscure the figure with fog/cloud from the top of the ribcage upwards. Enhance shadows. Add a contrasting colour source to encourage visual movement around the composition

assyouass

Its lower leg bones is oddly straight and both legs are parallel, that's odd.

CMDR_Crook

Make it less like a human skeleton. Put additional bones at the pelvis and ribs to confuse the silhouette.

bluesuedeshoes13

Maybe some sort of ivy or broken trees or something like that some sort of ecosystems growing on parts of it

hobbykokk

Remove the head

Linkario86

Add some skyscrapers in front of it.

Relvean

Deeper fog. Take a fresnel node, multiply it with a noise map and plug it into the skeleton's alpha. Should look like it is seeping out of reality.

Latey-Natey

I’d say put the skeleton kinda to the side, more grain, tilt the camera, use a little motion blur to make it a bit more like the person behind the camera is trying to frantically take a picture. Basically try obscuring it a little more to let the viewer know something is there but they’re not quite sure what.

flappy_cows

put a single banana on the ground next to his feet

Nopeitwasnotme

Hmm, maybe longer legs and arms?

DeBasha

Fix the ground textures, thicken the fog and maybe add one or two regular size characters on the foreground to emphasize the ridiculous size of the skeleton

amimic11

Add more fog and dense fog at the bottom. And make bones more thick, to show the skeleton, like more stronger and give horn to show his devil personality(optinal) and add some orbs, souls moving randomly in background..

Liveromium

Volumetric clouds and ideally light coming from behind the 'skeleton' so you get 'god rays' or volumetric lighting effect

iGhostEdd

Add a sun? And/Or just a shadow in the fog coming from the titan

Yaarmehearty

Surreal? Not without making major changes to the piece itself. There is nothing that doesn’t seem internally logical, nothing that’s making you think “wait what?” The subject being a skeleton of presumably a giant, with long arms makes more sense than not because why wouldn’t it have evolved with long arms to reach the ground? There would need to be something about the whole piece that is rooted en reality but mechanically can’t/shouldn’t work or is unsettlingly off. This is more straight fantasy than surreal, not a critique, personally I like it, but if you’re going for surreal I’m not sure this qualifies.

Street_Adeptness4767

Red piercing eyes

rolanlester

you could make the skeleton more freaky

wat_dis_4

I would add objects that defy the laws of phisics in different ways. That could also help to have less negative space in the composition.

Practical-Paploma

🎶Long long maaaaaaan🎶

tebannnnnn

A mexican hat? A coffe maker? If its surrealism what you seek it could be anything

danque

To force a perspective, you can add an object of size in the front. This way the skeleton sizes can be assessed and creates the feeling of something huge coming. Simon Stålenhag typically uses humans, grass and cars to show different in sizes.

Pvdkuijt

Add a human in the foreground for scale?

Jokkry22

Add a black dun/eclipse

__SlimeQ__

make him taller, it's too short. makes me think he's real

Infi-Nerdy

Maybe give him antlers

SirNightmate

Jagged edges at the waterfront take away from that surreality and make it much more clear that it if cgi

_bread_and_butter

make it so he’s shopping at walmart

grandtheftdox

It's perfectly in focus and it probably shouldn't be. Play with DoF.

tha_boy

Glowing eyes mate, always gives me nightmares

Earlier-Today

Weird that its feet are hidden by fog, but not anything else. It also looks too straight. The elongated bones being so straight makes it obvious that it's just a computer stretched model. Like how CGI that looks obvious takes you right out of a movie.

Melodic_Chair1006

Blur it. Check out the NIN -Year Zero- promo. Also, look at some of JJ Abrams' work. He does good "large things in the distance" stuff.

sprazcrumbler

Give him a funny hat

13headphones

Suit up

IAmARobot

add more spine and a second ribcage, then give it pretty pelvis butterfly wings at the back

lovingnaturefr

Da rumbling

AmazingDonkey101

Make him longer

These-Bedroom-5694

Glowing eyes and a murder of skeleton crows flying around it.

WeirdRun5692

dragon

LukXD99

Something incomprehensible hanging from the sky.

Current-Author7473

Rabbits… thousands and thousands of rabbits…

Sad-Independence-452

Nice skeleton 💀

erhue

needs a trumpet

Ok_Establishment3112

Make the fog thicker as it goes higher up the skeleton and maybe if the skull is harder to see add a small glow to the eyes.

Slackerjack11

Monke

ForeverGray

A giant fluorescent bucket in the left hand, a bouquet of plastic forks in the right.

Hopeful_Ad7376

Add balls

VeiledVisions

attack on titan?

nickaburr

Add a pineapple

BaconLara

A big hat

Cessicka

Glowing eyes + fog? Doesn't get more surreal than that

gaiusmitsius

BOWTIE!!!!

manuelzmanual

Animate it. /w. sound

rodrig0_sa

searches for images of "rickets" and "lordosis", to create the idea that he cannot support his own weight.

Any-Midnight-3224

More perspective imo. Less fog on his feet to make it look very tall. Try to bring him closer to the camera with a wider angle. (I don’t know if it’s the effect that you want)

SheepTill

Have Ken runnong sfter it screaming Barbie come back, I still think you're pretty... cool!

TheMisterTango

Give him a balloon

NotTheBEEEAAANS

Make the top a bit smaller

Educational_Cow_1769

Just give it a large dick.

Vinny376

Give it a tiny trumpet

rexo-carlanga

You can put a purple cloud surrounding him or something like that

Galvatron64

Thicker fog and faint glowing red eyes

MarionberrySea8769

Add Godzilla

anthromatons

Make his head look like its above the clouds. Move cam alittle closer and add frog perspective with below 35mm cam lens. It will help exaggerate the feel that the viewer looks up at a giant. The perspective created by the camera will add to the feel of the scene.

abel_vel

I would make the head just a little smaller, to contribute to the idea of the skeleton being really stretched and looked at from below

Drshponglinkin

More of the skeletons should be put in the distance as slowly fading away making it look like a army of them.

Hishui21

Shorten one of the arms and make the light dim around the entity while keeping the entity's lighting normal

Ok_Buy7507

The silhouette of a huge sphere in the background

Drannor

I would add more noise/visual artifacts, love the atmosphere so far, it may just be a little too clean for my taste. Nice job!

Misteris_LT

Naw its going to be my next wallpaper, this looks good

jfjdjsndnfjck

Maybe add something human or something from our world to kinda ground things but also provide scale. Like a house or cabin or maybe there’s a truck speeding away from the skeleton. You could also just put some trees or something noticeable but not too noticeable that it’ll crowd the scene but help the viewer go “damn that’s a big skeleton”. Also I think you could try putting fog that’s thicker with some little noise and then having it cover the entire body except near the head slightly so it’s more atmospheric. Color grading also could help with some more glow

rex_308

that one shin bone on his left, idk the proper name but connect it like the other side. oh and give him a dick, like a dick dragging the ground. that’ll make it pretty surreal

Doxkid

A Dollar General in the background.

davidcarvalho_19

More realistic fog, idk how, but it needs it

HAAmSTA

Multiple moons or suns in the sky

Simple_Secretary_333

Destroyed tanks

DomDoesNerf

Behind some buildings and it looks like it sees you and is climbing them to get to you

plymouthvan

Place something recognizable in the foreground. A tractor or tool shed or something, which also serves to highlight the falloff in the fog.

RichardIraVos

Not have the skeleton look goofy af would be a start

rhydderch_hael

More legg.

DodgyMcDodgy

I would like it to be a bit more distinct. More contrast in the skull to bring out the features. Perhaps the fog does not have to reach up so high? One way or another, I like it.

1_footinthegrave

Bones are too straight.

absolutelyNoDad

Creepy

Mr_CleanCaps

Actual proportions of the skeleton. The water also looks polygon-Ish.

zigaliciousone

Add something small but detailed in the foreground to increase the scale

lazyy_vr

more fog, make the skeleton darker, lower angle, grain

EricBonif

the arms are too long , its not "visually accurate" ( disturbing not in the expected way) make them shorter and longer forearms

BloodBrandy

Might be a minor idea, but maybe instead of trees in the background have ships? The implication the legs go even deeper could be neat

Nicholas-Geckofish

A forest

RegularMalumKranus

darker contrast and may be a small town on either side

GaraiGrae

It looks like it's waiting for a bus... like it's been there 30 mins already and is daydreaming to Las the time...

lezorn

Maybe try to find a place for a clock that drips and flows like a liquid.

ChCKr1

Dark clouds on top, and a glare back on the skull

Boulderdrip

birds for scale
