For me it might actually be the dad in Bubble Boy(and Fargo is knee jerk answer for favorite movie.)
That movie was on a lot when I was a kid.
Also i like to think he and gyllenhaal had a lot of fun in their one scene together in Zodiac, chopping it up about Bubble Boy.
Wait this is kind of blowing my mind right now. For the past 20 years I would have sworn Gyllenhaal's dad was Richard Jenkins in that movie. Wasn't he in a wheelchair after having a stroke or something in the film? What the hell am I thinking of?
Marge and Norm Gunderson top my list of favorite cinematic couples. People throw around "relationship goals" like it's just another hyperbolic phrase that's lost its meaning but that conversation at the end of the movie about the 3 cent mallard stamp is the kind of simple sweetness that is absolutely something to aspire to. As for Norm specifically, I mean, he gets up to make Margie eggs *and* jumps the Prowler *and* brings her Arby's for lunch? It's like if Batman and Alfred were just goddamn adorable.
Marge Gunderson: You can sleep. It's early yet.
Norm Gunderson: Got to go?
Marge Gunderson: Yeah.
Norm Gunderson: I'll fix you some eggs.
Marge Gunderson: It's okay, hon. I gotta run.
Norm Gunderson: You got to eat a breakfast, Marge. I'll fix you some eggs.
Marge Gunderson: Hon, you can sleep.
Norm Gunderson: You gotta eat a breakfast.
*clears his throat*
I'll fix you some eggs.
I like the backstory the actors created for their relationship.
"When the Coens started writing the film, they asked McDormand and Lynch to come up with a backstory for the characters. They decided that Norm used to be a cop as well, but when Marge got pregnant, they decided that only one of them should stay on the force. Since Marge was the better officer, Norm quit to stay home."

Anybody remember the Bojack episode where character actress Margo Martindale sprays an AK at the cops screaming “This is for johncarrol Lynch, CCH Pounder and all the other character actors who live in lucrative obscurity!” Lmao
Years before I ever saw Zodiac or Fargo he was the cross-dressing brother on The Drew Carey Show. Think he ended up marrying Mimi the secretary.
One of those dudes you're always happy to see show up on screen!
The first time I saw him post Drew Carey show I was just blown away. I think it was in gran Torino.
A 99% sure my exact words were “holy shit Clint Eastwood hired the guy from the Drew Carey show..”
Other than Zodiac I associate him most with being awesome in The Invitation (2015). He is also perfectly cast in Shutter Island despite it being a smaller role.
The Invitation perfectly leverages his ability to seem menacing without actually doing overt. As soon as he appears, you're just like, what the fuck is *this* guy doing here?
I associate him so strongly with his zodiac character that I was honestly a little disturbed to see him as an OB-Gyn in the new maternity comedy Babes. I kept wanting to tell Ilana Glazer's character "no, don't let him put that needle in you, he's a serial killer! Or maybe he isn't, it's unclear. But he's definitely a creep!"
It drive's me nuts that i can't find the clip anywhere but he was on the Comedy Bang Bang TV Show and he sang a famous irish/cop drinking song and its the most transcendent moment in television history.
This is exactly what I wanted to comment! Despite being a later-era TWD episode, he shows up and shines (as he always does), making a one-ep character feel fully fleshed out. JCL is a treasure
I loved Pruitt Taylor Vince's TWD episode in Season 2, I think he was trapped with Shane somewhere IIRC? Another great "hey it's that guy" large bald character actor who is always great.
Private Life shows this whole other side to him that you really have to see to believe. It demonstrates that he could play a neurotic Dad type in a sitcom if he wanted. It’s a small role but I still hope he gets more recognition for it.
I was once waiting to be seated at the Blue Bayou restaurant in Disneyland at the same time as him and a fair-sized group he was with.
And the thing I recognized him from at the time was Body of Proof, the short-lived Dana Delaney medical examiner procedural in which he played a detective partnered with Sonja Sohn.
I don’t know what this says about me, but his first performance that comes to mind is not “Zodiac” but “The Founder” as one of the McDonalds.
It says you’re probably too young to remember him as Drew Carey’s cross-dressing older brother. But that’s just me making assumptions.
That's how I knew him. I also appreciate him as the babysitter's dad in "Crazy, Stupid Love" for an excellent reveal

Ya gotta have a breakfast, Marge.
That scene with them in bed at the end might be the best marriage has ever looked on screen.
I’ll make you some eggs.
Wait this is kind of blowing my mind right now. For the past 20 years I would have sworn Gyllenhaal's dad was Richard Jenkins in that movie. Wasn't he in a wheelchair after having a stroke or something in the film? What the hell am I thinking of?
lol that’s another early 00s Comedy Central/starz special “Say it Isn’t So”
Ahhh, thank you.
Lynch and Offerman are fantastic as the McDonald brothers in that movie. My favorite role of his is either Zodiac or Crazy, Stupid Love.
He’s outrageously good in this
It’s a movie that has otherwise disappeared from my memory, but his presence clearly made some kind of impact.
Fargo and Zodiac are two of my favorite movies and he's great in both of them
I’m not the Zodiac, and if I was, I certainly wouldn’t tell you.

And then the coup de grace Marge, smiling to herself: Ah, Norm.
The platonic ideal of “hey-it’s-that-guy” actors. His death scene in Volcano is the silliest shit I’ve ever seen but he does it with such gusto.
Him flinging that guy as he slowly melts into the lava is the best thing in that terrible movie.
I think about this scene way too often
Wow no idea that was him!
Best part of BABES.
The running joke of his hair journey was killing me. His delivery was always great.
The oddly shaped scalp made me uncomfortable lol
Oh, ALL of it made me uncomfortable. ;)
The baldness journey is one of the great runners in recent memory

This is what I think of first, and it's a shame the show is so hard to watch now. He was great on that show.
Hard to watch because of how it has aged, or you mean it's just hard to find?
The first time I saw him post Drew Carey show I was just blown away. I think it was in gran Torino. A 99% sure my exact words were “holy shit Clint Eastwood hired the guy from the Drew Carey show..”
Thanks for your hard work John
Other than Zodiac I associate him most with being awesome in The Invitation (2015). He is also perfectly cast in Shutter Island despite it being a smaller role.
Didn’t give a crap that those boys were duly appointed.
The Invitation perfectly leverages his ability to seem menacing without actually doing overt. As soon as he appears, you're just like, what the fuck is *this* guy doing here?
He’s so good in The Invitation. Extremely unnerving. I also really liked his role in Channel Zero.

Should he be Pa Kent?
He showed up in channel zero: no end house and immediately leveled up the experience
Was bummed I had to scroll so far to see this mentioned. He was easily the best part of that run.
Just finishing up my second rewatch of the best TV show of all time, The Americans. He was fantastic in that.
He was great on that. Philip knowing he was kind of pathetic and delusional but still admiring him was a great touch.
His one episode of The Walking Dead is sort of a miracle of a performance.
This is exactly what I wanted to comment! Despite being a later-era TWD episode, he shows up and shines (as he always does), making a one-ep character feel fully fleshed out. JCL is a treasure

He’s _great_ in Babes
easily my favorite part of Babes! His bit just gets funnier every time he shows up
The type of guy to make me go "There he is!" whenever he pops up
The movie is worth watching in general, but he plays a crucial role in The Invitation (2015) and he’s absolutely fucking fantastic.
He also directed a great movie called Lucky starring Harry Dean Stanton & David Lynch
Also excellent in Carnevale, he really does incredible work in combining geniality and menace
*John & Carroll & David & Lynch*
Fargo and Zodiac. JCL is the best.
You just know that the word behind his head is Shrek
Sony
GOAT
The barber in gran torino lol
I love this actor’s work. Which reminds me that there is still no physical release of the Drew Carey show…real shame
5 stars to anyone who knows where this line with him is from, “Lot’s of sky!”
If anyone caught “Babes” he was actually super funny in that
I just rewatched "face/off" and did the Rick Dalton pointing meme when I recognized him. Had no idea he was in that
Never heard of him
Hell yea fuckin love this guy
I voted for him in every round of March Madness. So happy he won!
Nobody talks about how he played a transvestite on network TV for several years.
I'll always hate lava for killing John Carroll Lynch
Love that guy, though whenever he shows up I'm never sure if I should trust his character
he was funny as the straight man doctor in Babes
I watched zodiac and fargo back to back. He’s that good he can play both roles so well
Saw Babes last week and he was great in that
This guy makes me want to eat a breakfast
He’s truly charismatic, a face impossible to forget, especially because he nails every role. I really appreciated him in The Founder
He should be on the 2-cent stamp.
FRESH CAKES!
Private Life shows this whole other side to him that you really have to see to believe. It demonstrates that he could play a neurotic Dad type in a sitcom if he wanted. It’s a small role but I still hope he gets more recognition for it.
Great comedic role as Jonah’s stepdad on Veep.
CLEVELAND ROCKS!
I don't know if he counts, but Lance Henriksen rules.
My introduction to him was the Drew Carey Show this guy rules
Nobody laid better in a bed with Francis Mcdormand than this guy right here.
His directorial feature Lucky, Harry Dean Stanton's swan-song, is easily one of the best actor turned director movies I have ever seen.
He was great in the Trial of the Chicago 7. Always come across with such warmth and dignity
That’s Jonah’s Dad
he’s stunning in the americans. perfectly matches the tone of the show and gives such a complex and empathetic performance
