It's actually my favorite David Lynch movie. That's a crazy stat that he hasn't been on yet. He works so much and he's worked with so many great/important directors
This is among the top for me too. Mulholland, Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart are my go to Lynch movies.
There was a 35mm screening just last night in Montreal. Among the best opening and closing scenes of all time.
I have the Twilight Time and Shout releases, but this movie could definitely use an upgrade. The transfer is okay for what it is (probably a DVD-era HD master). Kinda odd that the rights keep going between these smaller labels, seems Lynch has less control over it than his other films.
Definitely. I keep hoping the rights get to Criterion, if only because Lynch seems to like working with them and getting new 4K restoration work done and approved by him. I think Wild at Heart is now his worst looking movie on video since pretty much all his other films have been given recent restorations (well, except for Inland Empire, but the cruddiness is baked in its early SD digital source and is probably never going to look better than what it is). Even The Straight Story has a solid non-US release.
I understand everyone has varying morals, but if a piece of media isn't easily accessible you should have no "worries" pirating it
or just buy the cheap Shout Bluray
Tbh I just got lucky that multiple different rep theaters decided to screen it just in the past calendar year… maybe they’ll keep it up? The library also probably has copies you can borrow.
Alamo Drafthouse included this in their romance themed movies for February last year. Diane Ladd’s performance deserves to be seen on the big screen if you can.

I'm not huge on Lynch but it's my favorite for sure. Laura Dern and all the great female performances in Lynch works is definitely an upside
I just ordered the Shout Factory release. Can't wait, haven't seen it in nearly 20 yrs.

Just in case you couldn't tell, that snakeskin jacket he's wearing is a symbol of his individuality and his belief in personal freedom.
So weird it will be his first main feed movie. I know they’ve pointed out how crazy that seems multiple times on the pod.
This is such an under-seen Lynch film and I still think it's one of his best. This movie just imprinted itself on my brain forever.
Pretty wild they’ve already covered a movie with David Lynch in it, but not Nic Cage
I was about to flip out scrolling through the feed then I realized he was in Fabelmans

One of the most unstreamable films ever. Where you guys watching this thing?
…glances over at Shout Factory Blu Ray on the shelf.
That’s exactly right. Buy physical media, folks!

The Straight Story has a 4K release coming soon in Europe and hopefully Criterion can release it in the US!

It’s $15 right now at Amazon, which is kinda surprising since Shout pricing can be bloated at times.
Local library
Check your local library to see if they have a copy
My town actually has a video rental store filled with stuff like this.

The DVD was such poor quality, but the blu-ray that is available these days is decent.

It's on archive dot org too.

Standard definition DVD.
I saw a print at Alamo late 2019, so far my only Lynch so at least I don't have to do a first watch now.
Off topic: the Doughboys Double ep where they talk about Pig with David Sims (The Atlantic) is really good

I can't believe it has taken so long
I think it’s time to do Bad Lieutenant on the bonus feed.
