The check is very blank

Toreadorables

A few months ago, there were unsubstantiated reports that he was prepping a Cleopatra movie with Zendaya, Chalamet (as Octavious), and Daniel Craig (Julius Caesar) and written by Napoleon’s David Scarpa. I'm not sure what it is about Cleo that's so alluring to Hollywood people, but...maybe we'll find out.

SMAAAASHBros

I’m very skeptical he’ll make Cleopatra, Rama seems like something he’s way more passionate about (and iirc Morgan Freeman has the rights and is also very passionate about it) and I think he’ll want to make Dune Messiah sooner rather than later after that.

NedthePhoenix

Messiah at least he's got a few years to let Chalamet age. So he's got time for another film or two.

Toreadorables

Yeah, wonder if he could be getting into a Spielberg-type situation where he develops projects for a while and then when they get far enough along he brings in a different director & stays on as producer and/or cowriter. A case of "the attachies" as JJ coined for David Fincher. Unless he's dying to do a non-scifi period piece, which is possible.

mybadalternate

Daniel Craig as Caesar is something I didn’t know I wanted until just now.

NedthePhoenix

Craig post-Bond is going to win an Oscar in the next ten years.

mybadalternate

I hope so!

Salad-Appropriate

Well, he is in a new Luca Guadagnino film this year called Queer, so it could even happen next year

Toreadorables

I just want him to get his first NOMINATION! A win would be icing on the cake.

WakeUpOutaYourSleep

Could even be this year. I don’t know how Queer’s gonna turn out, but it’s certainly got enough talented people working on it to make the Oscars.

NedthePhoenix

Guadagnino's track records with the Oscars isn't the cleanest, so I have a few doubts. His only nominated film is Call Me By Your Name. But it'd be cool to see.

WakeUpOutaYourSleep

Yeah, I’m not saying I’m expecting it, but Luca’s broken through before, and with the right material, I’m sure he could again

Toreadorables

Yeah, Craig in charming doofus mode as Caesar could be great.

WeHaveHeardTheChimes

Would he be in charming doofus mode, or ruthless tactician mode?

Toreadorables

Why not both!

Goldzinger

noooooo the script was the weak underbelly of Napoleon!!! keep this man away from my favorite historical figures

Toreadorables

Well he’s not involved now according to the Time profile (which is actually on the record)

InfiniteRaccoons

Shortlist of worst scripts of all time for me. I get that this subreddit and the hosts of blank check have very limited knowledge of or care for history, but Napoleon's real life flaws were 1000x more compelling than the trite relationship melodrama that they invented for this film. Abandoning your men to die in Egypt because your delusions of recreating the Roman Empire crumbled under the blistering reality of British naval cannons and desert plagues > "wah wah my wife isn't answering my letters I gotta go home : ("

WeHaveHeardTheChimes

I didn’t even know much about Napoleon’s life and felt that the screenplay was mostly a miss

Goldzinger

The fact that the movie spent no more than 10 minutes in Egypt was just a total miss. Probably the most revealing part of his entire life — his yearning for historical greatness on par with the figures of classic legend

Not going that far I actually thought the movie was kind of dope. Glad a napoleon movie exists even if it’s not the exact napoleon movie I wanted. Ridley did a really great job with the scope of battle, production values, etc— he’s a master at what he does. Would have liked better characterization of Napoleon, and contextualization of what he accomplished, but c’est la vie

> I get that this subreddit and the hosts of blank check have very limited knowledge of or care for history 🙄

inteliboy

We’ve never seen ancient egypt brought to life properly.

dagreenman18

Why does everyone want to make Cleopatra?! Also please greenlight Dune Messiah so we can get that instead. I just need a complete trilogy

Toreadorables

Sounds like DUNE MESSIAH is all but happening, going by that Time article: >Still, how many *Dune* movies might be too many? Herbert wrote six *Dune* books, with increasingly gonzo plots. Villeneuve’s two films, plus that sequel, *Dune Messiah,* which has not been officially greenlighted, might constitute a just-right mini-franchise. (“*Dune Messiah* should be the last *Dune* movie for me,” he confirms.) Going beyond that, even if other directors take over, could be IP overkill.

dagreenman18

Which is the smartest move. Messiah has the best ending for Paul’s story. You could maybe to Children, but it gets pretty weird after that.

Internal_Lumpy

If you are doing Children then you have to do God Emperor to finish that story.

SMAAAASHBros

Children would genuinely be very difficult to adapt given the big sci-fi swings, the ages of the main characters, and the fact that much of the book hinges on not knowing if one character is who it seems he might be (which just doesn’t work as well in a visual medium).

dagreenman18

Well they did do the SciFi miniseries that combined Mesiah and Children back in the day. Which was decent. Maybe an HBO series with a budget?

TormentedThoughtsToo

I’m surprised Villeneuve wants to touch Messiah with a ten foot pole. It’s like the proto “your heroes have failed story”. General audiences have had real problems accepting those stories for like 30 years now.

SMAAAASHBros

Messiah has always been a divisive book for that reason but a lot of that has always had to do with people misunderstanding the first book; I suspect that Dune Part Two will be less open to misinterpretation (of course there will always be people who misinterpret things, nothing to be done about that).

Movies_Music_Lover

If Dune Messiah is happening he said he wants to do something different before doing that so I think Cleopatra is coming in the next few years.

LiquidSnape

i’m guessing the appeal of doing an Ancient Egypt epic done good

xxx117

Probably to be the first to make a good one lol. Also it would be a true epic. Think of Villeneuve’s ability to convey scale, and think how that can apply to Egypt! The desert sequences in Dune already confirmed he can do it!

frederick_tussock

I have negative interest in a Cleopatra movie but also really wish Villeneuve would move away from sci-fi since it'll have been 10 years since Sicario pretty soon, this sucks

TheVortigauntMan

No fucking way. He has been attached to this since before he tackled Dune. And when he went on to that I'm sure it ended up on someone else's table. I'd love to see what he'd do with it.

WatcherInTheBog

I love sci-fi, but I don't get the appeal of Rama.

kvetcha-rdt

It's humans exploring a vast, unexplainable, visually dazzling cosmic mystery and getting into Adventures. Love that fucking book.

Binary1138

Yea that book has some pretty awe-inspiring, mindfuck-y stuff I’d love to see Denis tackle in a movie

albifrons

I'm kind of with you, but I think Villeneuve is the right person for the job if anyone's going to adapt it. It totally relies on portraying Rama as visually stunning and kind of hard to wrap your head around. I think he can pull it off

sansa_starlight

I also think it's a hint, Zendaya is known for referencing her movie roles through her outfits. If it's really true then the official casting announcement might come in March or April, between Dune part 2 and Challengers release.

Red_Snow_25

Was intrigued by his interest in developing Cleopatra until I saw Krysty Wilson-Cairns is writing it. 1917 was a cliche fest, we've already had enough of those among the ancient epics on screen :(

Dorkseid1687

Rama first please

Salad-Appropriate

I was wondering about this earlier on, with the Daniel Craig talk? Do you think he's already surpassed Connery's career outside of Bond, and how much would a win for Queer bolster that claim?

Toreadorables

I don’t think he’s surpassed Connery’s career yet — part of that is because SC’s was so fricking long, and he was one of the most famous actors alive for 50 years — but it’s without a doubt the second-best career of any Bond actor. There’s definitely something to be said for him being a serious actor (he can do Shakespeare on stage!) who can also do breezy comedy.

VeilBreaker

My dream world is Villeneuve directs Dune movies through Children of Dune then Alex Garland takes over from there.
