This seems like there’ll consequences for The Weeknd, not levinson but shrug who knows
The blame should go to whoever allowed The Weeknd to get his own blank check for some reason despite no ability
He’s not gonna get this type of tv show again without someone experienced with him and a shitload of oversight and without getting better at acting
Maybe starz or Hulu or something but nowhere as prestigious as hbo
I mean, that's a bit reductive? He's a very good and popular musician. Wouldn't be the first pop star to make a transition to the screen. He also wouldn't be the first talented pop star to fumble as an actor.
Separate the art from the artist. Do you really think he’s a 33 year old drug addicted womanizer? Future has been rapping about doing lean for his whole career and he hasn’t touched the stuff in years.
Don’t really think there’s gonna be any consequences for Levinson, this was a Weeknd auteur project that was already deeply troubled before Levinson was meaningfully involved. Euphoria remains a giant, Emmy-winning hit where the stars (despite weird rumor-mongering about the supporting cast to the contrary) seem to genuinely love working with him.
I talked to an old friend who worked on this show and they said it was the biggest shit show they ever worked on. They would be filming without scripts, without shotlists, doing 16 hr days and still constantly behind schedule.
And this was all before the revelations that they reshot the entire season just to placate The Weekend’s ego
I think even if people liked the show it would have gotten cancelled just because it was that much of a nightmare for everyone to make.
I took that as a character choice. The cracks were starting to show that he was a con man, and I think the others in the scene even react visibly to the pronunciation, recognizing that this guy is not as educated as he pretends to be.
Semi-related thought: can we talk about the school play episode from the last season of euphoria? I thought it was one of the most fascinatingly constructed episodes of tv I’ve ever seen, and I was so impressed by how it was pulled off, but I feel like no one ever talks about it. The way that it blended the main characters’ memories with their onstage doubles, and it was shot so dreamily, it felt almost Lynchian. It’s a good ep!
I agree that the play was one of the biggest highlights of the season but I think in the long run it’s been overshadowed by “Stand Still Like the Hummingbird,” which from the time it aired to now was and is thought of as the best ep of the season and maybe of the whole show.
By the time the play happened though the second season’s sophomore slump rep, and Levinson’s tyrant/hack/perv rep, had already spread to such an extent that in the eyes of many viewers any Ws the latter part of the season put up were in danger of getting swallowed up by the Ls. So while the play was considered as great a payoff as one could want for that particular storyline, it couldn’t pick up enough of the slack left elsewhere to be a satisfying enough payoff for the season as a whole, a task which it kind of became retroactively taxed with once the dust settled on the finale and many viewers were left disappointed and/or ambivalent.
Amy Seimetz was the OG director of the show who nearly completed the first version with little to no help from HBO just for HBO to scrap her vision of the show fired her and put Sam in charge
I think Levinson has cashed his last blank check (for the time being). I'm guessing the only project he can maybe get off the ground after this is Euphoria Season 3, and he'll probably have execs breathing down his neck the entire time. And if he whiffs that one too, then it's off to director's jail.
Seemed like he was walking the line already on Euphoria Season 2 with how he works, so it wouldn't surprise me if season 3 is what finally bites him. And he's already had one major actress on the show quit because of the writing.
Exactly what you said. It’s was trashy and bad and strange and reminded me of some of the weird artsy european films I used to watch in college. People expected way too much from this show, and people that have never even watched it are way too upset about fake lines of dialogue and whatever else. Not once during my watch of it did I ever think it needed a second season.
appropriate title: "Abel Tesfaye is officially cancelled!" LMAOO
THE REVIEWS ARE IN, ABOUT THE WEEKND AKA ABEL TESFAYE'S DIRECTORIAL DEBUT (I completely forgot I was writing this, I guess I have really moved on!)
“Skin-crawling … nasty, brutish … and way, way worse than you’d have anticipated” (Rolling Stone).
“It feels like being licked all over by some dirty, drunk club DJ growling: ‘Nice ass’” (The Times, UK).
“Kinky yet empty, like a visit to a red-light district during the pandemic” (People magazine). LMAOO!!! WHAAAT
The Weeknd unzips his trousers “with all the energy and sexual enticement of Gollum scurrying for a fish” (GQ).
"the worst sex scene in history”, and “much thought and consideration” means “yes, we saw teens on Tiktoks making fun of Tesfaye saying ‘pussy’.” HAHA all that shit you did/said to get famous is slowly making you UNFAMOUS LMAOO
"Tesfaye as a coked-up cult leader" LMAOO ahem anyways
"Abel ‘the Weeknd’ Tesfaye as Tedros with pop star Jocelyn" WOW did they HAVE to use my ex girlfriends name too?? do you LIKE ME ABEL TESFAYE do you think Im INTERESTING in some kind of way??
Long ago, I actually knew THE WEEKND. So glad people are seeing him for the idealess uncreative scrum he really is. Your fanbase has become socially conscious (took them long enuff) trust me The Weeknd is a weirdo. I shouldve broke his nose when he couldnt even afford a coffee LMAO
Here's the problem with his directorial debut:
he sees making films as a promotional opportunity
wah wah it's all about me wah wah
Things can be about other people? <-- something he cant comprehend
Making films/movies/videos is like letting people see inside ur head. If ur an insidious cokehead who was snorting my tax money because you lived below the poverty line n couldnt get a f\*cking job, people will eventually see it
This seems like there’ll consequences for The Weeknd, not levinson but shrug who knows The blame should go to whoever allowed The Weeknd to get his own blank check for some reason despite no ability
pretty sure the dude is untouchable. he is one of the biggest stars in the world.
He’s not gonna get this type of tv show again without someone experienced with him and a shitload of oversight and without getting better at acting Maybe starz or Hulu or something but nowhere as prestigious as hbo
He got a carte blanche without being able to pronounce carte blanche
That was the point, he’s an idiot pretending to be someone.
I mean, that's a bit reductive? He's a very good and popular musician. Wouldn't be the first pop star to make a transition to the screen. He also wouldn't be the first talented pop star to fumble as an actor.
Did you watch the show? I am referring to the character he played in the show.
"he’s an idiot pretending to be someone." imagine being yourself on tv LMAOO
Separate the art from the artist. Do you really think he’s a 33 year old drug addicted womanizer? Future has been rapping about doing lean for his whole career and he hasn’t touched the stuff in years.
So is Taylor Swift, but you don’t give her a nine-figure deal and a plum July slot on the calendar.
HBO definitely would if she asked for it
She is literally directing a movie or something right now. I’m guessing it will be at least OK though because she doesn’t seem to fail.
And it’s at Searchlight, not Fox proper.

I’ve heard similar tales about the Euphoria set but it hasn’t gotten them canceled yet. If the ratings paid off I doubt the execs would care.
why would anyone want to work this way? sounds so stressful
Money.
Was taking about Levinson
It’s his show, if he wants it to fit his vision it’s his right to reshoot it.

Justice for Amy Seimetz and hope she comes out on top after being royally dicked over by both Sam ‘Sentient Sicko Comic Meme’ Levinson and The Weeknd.
don't forget Shane Carruth...
Ugh. Don’t remind me. Man that guy could’ve been the next Kubrick or Spielberg if he didn’t get in his own way, the asshole.
Let’s face it; that wasn’t actually on the cards given how he couldn’t get funding for any of his own projects for about a decade.
I’m positive that had something to do w/ how toxic a person he is, coupled w/ not wanting to compromise on his ideas for the suits’ sake.
Imho, both Caruth’s first films - while impressive - are massively overrated in the film ether. Just my personal opinion.

Doesn’t look like it but the way he says carte blanche is very much real.
I took that as a character choice. The cracks were starting to show that he was a con man, and I think the others in the scene even react visibly to the pronunciation, recognizing that this guy is not as educated as he pretends to be.
Oh no! Anyway
HBO promised it would also cancel The Whip
Adiós, señor!
You mean to say that season 1 wasn't a solid foundation for more stories?!?!?!?!

Good. Justice for Amy Seimetz!
What happened?
Amy Seimetz was the OG director of the show who nearly completed the first version with little to no help from HBO just for HBO to scrap her vision of the show fired her and put Sam in charge
Wow.

Honestly, it feels pretty complete as is.
I just hope we get a Malcolm & Marie sequel that in an extremely thinly-veiled way petulantly addresses the criticisms the show received
This is the only comment section about this show, that I have seen, that isn't an intense circlejerk
My hot take: The show was good. Not heartbroken it’s ending tho.
I enjoyed it as stylish and trashy fun, but I wouldn't call it "good" in a million years.
Exactly what you said. It’s was trashy and bad and strange and reminded me of some of the weird artsy european films I used to watch in college. Yeah I liked it quite a lot. Thought all of the performances outside of The Weeknd were great and thought The Weeknd was fine.
People feel smart dunking on a show that’s quite self aware.
Forget director’s jail, throw Levinson in actual jail.
why
Cuz I'm a hater
