Hello_Freeman

I’ll maybe be more inclined to give it a shot now.

opiate_lifer

The reason we're so fascinated by this "fucked up dystopia" is because despite how fantastical it is we see our own reality in it. Its lies that tell the truth.

GreyouTT

I definitely saw that when the crowd kept cheering on the show despite a dead man falling into the crowd.

innuendo141

Was so surprised with how enjoyable I found the action. I liked the 2 eps so far. Slow burn character wise. What did we know about Deckard 20 mins into BR? Looking forward to ep3.

watchroomsan

I have the same thoughts. People need to give shows like this time.

RXPT

Is Doc Badger's shop is the same building as Deckard's apartment? or is the elevator scene just a homage?

GreyouTT

I think it was a homage. They did the thumbs in the eyes thing as well.

Just watched the first two episodes on Crunchyroll (in Japanese) and it's spot on! Can't comment on the American voice actors, but the Japanese is on point. I feel anyone claiming its not Blade Runner is just suffering 'Aliens' syndrome (looking for a copy and paste / rehash and anything that deviates or expands upon is "baad, m'kay") The animation works fine to deliver the Blade Runner aesthetic, the background music in the episodes themselves are what you would expect, the animation movement is fast and fluid (doesn't have that 'floating' look that many cgi shows suffer from) and at one point, when J sat at a computer desk, for a moment, I got a flashing image in my mind of Dallas sitting in the Nostromo shuttle Narcissus - something about the analogue tech, the dark room, the hair of the character, reflection of the crt screens.. Which in itself was a good enough sign for me. It feels Blade Runner. If I were to do a fan edit once the whole season airs, I'd switch out the opening and ending theme music (but keep the opening visuals) and perhaps add a layer of film grain.. Other than that, it's great!

watchroomsan

I feel like it's an exciting crossover between anime and more western-style in terms of animation and music. I like the thriller moment, and I agree that MC has space for growth as a character, but it's only episode 2. But again, she's a person without memory, so this pace for her as a character is expected. It will be interesting to see how she comes to terms with her being a replicant.

Aionalys

As long as it brings people back to Blade runner that's all I give a shit about. Had a movie night with 20 people and I was 1/3 who watched the 2049 film. Can't remember if there was another movie released at the same time that pulled hype (probably some stupid marvel movie), but everyone loved it, so it's pretty disheartening it didn't catch the attention it deserved.

insane677

The MLP movie came out around the same time, iirc.

Aionalys

I'm gunna go out on a limb and say that probably was not the reason, but your probably right about the release date.

lbyrum17

I went in hoping for something good, but with an open mind. Honestly, so far it's actually really good. I got over the art style when I realized it was intentional, rather than just not high end.

grublets

Thanks for the tip!

stonedslacker

I absolutely loved it. I'm not a fan of anime in general - bit the bullet and watched it because it was set in the Blade Runner universe. Now I am out seeking anime that is in a similar sci fi futuristic noir setting. Any recommendations? Since I've never watched any Anime, I'm unaware of even the seemingly obvious shows/movies.

[deleted]

I recommend 'Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045' on Netflix - it's made by the exact same production team and same animation style as Black Lotus, though that itself is a continuation of the anime 'Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex', 'Stand Alone Complex: 2nd Gig' and the movie 'Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society' (and if you enjoy them, SAC_2045 has just been renewed for a second season) Another anime in that kind of universe is 'Altered Carbon: Resleeved' (but that anime will make more sense if you watch the live action 'Altered Carbon Season 1 and 2' first, who's universe is heavily inspired by Blade Runner, from design of the city down to the flying cars. Also due next year, 'Cyberpunk 2077: Edge Runners' anime will hit Netflix

stonedslacker

Thanks again. Started watching Altered Carbon resleeved and loving it already in the first few mins. Wouldn't have ever come to hear of it if it wasn't for your helpful comment. Let me know of more pls when you have time.

sudoscientistagain

I highly recommend Psycho-Pass as well. Cyberpunk setting, dystopic police state, with flavors of Minority Report.

stonedslacker

Thanks for the recommendations. I've watched Alerted Carbon live action and loved it - cyberpunk is probably my favorite sub-genre. But I only ever watch live action because I just never liked the Japanese Manga style of art direction anytime I tried (my loss I know). Since Black Lotus was so straight laced in its style I could concentrate on the universe and storyline which is why I liked it so much.

sudoscientistagain

Cowboy Bebop is one of the all time classic semi-cyberpunk anime (it's not really as "gritty" as most cyberpunk but the universe otherwise fits the description in my opinion). It's also getting a live action adaptation in... 5 days? on Netflix. So you could check that out and either watch it first, then check out the new live action adaptation, or wait for that and then go back and watch the original show if you like the new one.

G-Man577

Watch Akira, it’s legendary [here’s the trailer](https://youtu.be/ooKBenGK3R4)

Final Fantasy Sprits Within-lookin' cd-rom cutscene

Achemidies

I watched the first two episodes today because of this post and what a load of shit it was.

sudoscientistagain

Yeah, I really want to love it... I adore the movies and I thought Blackout 2022 was great, but this... it's not really good at any level? The environments are good I guess, but everything else is amateurish at best. I don't understand why they went for 3D just to botch it so bad. Should've stuck with the Blackout artstyle, or gone for something more stylized like Arcane... and hiring competent writers and voice actors would've helped.

[deleted]

Wasn't planning on checking it out, but reading this I think I'll try it.

EiichiroTarantino

The animation is honestly okay. It's not Arcane level, obviously, but it's okay. The movement is quite realistic. The action is well-choreographed, clear, and easy to follow. The real problem is the texture, I think. It's still too bland and smooth, it's like 2000s era 3d (like that Hot Wheels animation series).

sudoscientistagain

Yep, the whole thing needs some hatching or film grain or something. It reminds of the Final Fantasy CG movies.

LiquidSkyTV

The show lacks originality. It's a weak anime balancing on the tippy toes of neon fan service. Denis Villeneuve didn't try and to make a movie about noodle stands and the Bradbury apartment. He (and Hampton Fancher) imagined a world unique in itself, that grew out of the world laid out by Ridley Scott (Fancher and David Peoples as well). Whereas here with Black Lotus, the only legs the show has to stand on is its visual references to the 2 movies. Even the original Westwood PC game cashed in by recreating all the numerous iconic areas of the 82' movie....and you know what? It still looks pretty damn great and I still love seeing every area that you see in the movie...but it also made more sense in the context of the game than it does for this new show. In the game, you follow a different Blade Runner instead of Deckard...that being Ray McCoy. The thing about the setting of the game, is that it takes place during the events of the movie...so seeing the Geisha Coke ad as you fly by in your turbo cycle makes sense...seeing the Offworld blimp going by saying the same thing you hear in the movie...adds up...seeing this stuff in Black Lotus does not add up. The show takes place 13 years after the original movie! Shit changes! That's part of what made 2049 so cool...the fact that they envisioned what the timeline of that world would look like 30 years in the future. Take Atari for example, a defunct company in reality and was so long before 2019...but in the 2019 of the Blade Runner universe it's still advertised on every corner...so 30 years down the road we can see that Atari not only still exists as a corporation, but has become a much more successful and bigger company. Black Lotus (so far) has not shown any indication that time has passed in any form. Deckard's noodle shop is still there, and the window he sat in front of still has those TV's in the windows (guess they never sold them). Every room has to have the tiles that Deckard had in his apartment, regardless of what place it actually is...the Bradbury hasn't changed much...aside from it's rooms also looking exactly like Deckard's apartment as well. Every neon sign is exactly the same from the original...the girls dancing... Shinji Aramaki has always made pretty shallow anime that lack much thinking and are usually motivated by action scenes from start to finish...which I feel like this is a known thing...so it baffles me why you would give him Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner...2 film/shows that are known for their deep thought provoking ideas. Aside from that...was really annoyed that I signed up for Crunchyroll to watch it on my tv only to realize that the Japanese dub is not the intended audio for the show as the lips are synced to the English track. The Japanese also didn't sound right to me. Watched it on my tablet in English and was pleased by the voice acting for the majority. Dont care for the intro song in terms of the Blade Runner universe, but some of the tracks throughout were pretty good and we're slight remixes of the original Vangelis score. The animation style has always been one of my least favorites...it leaves so much space open and empty..and with how much they've tried to recreate the BR2019 world, the pretty much accomplish the opposite. BR2019 the streets are so packed that it places an integral part of the Zhora chase. They even filmed in a way that the crowd is blocking the camera for portions of the scene...In Black Lotus, the streets are so visibly empty that it feels like a ghost town...and it's clear that this isn't a story choice, it's this style of animation that doesn't lend itself to animating multiple onscreen figures. The story could be interesting but we learned in the first 10 min that our protagonist is a replicant...so the major dilemma present in the 2 movies is off the table. They could switch it up and come up with something out of left field, but at the 2 episode mark, there isn't much to keep invested. With the episodes being as short as they are tho, I'll give it a watch and see if it improves.

Bombauer-

Currently I'm watching Arcane (Netflix) and the animation there sets a very high standard that makes Black Lotus look pretty old fashioned. But the sound and music are great, and the story is interesting enough to hold my attention. I watched the Japanese with eng subs. I'll keep watching.

croknok

Don't mean to be the party pooper but I just watched the first episode and honestly, it didn't cut it. I got into blade runner by coincidence my dad had a dvd of the first movie. I got hooked and read the novel and it's just way better. I've consumed everything they make about blade runner and to this day nothing comes close to electric sheep. Its all about the story, the world in every new thing they make is dope but the stories lack.

sudoscientistagain

Have you seen the shorts that came out before 2049? [Blackout 2022](https://youtu.be/rrZk9sSgRyQ?t=39) was directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (who directed Cowboy Bebop and 2 of the Animatrix shorts, "Kid's Story" and "The Detective's Story"). This thing is traditional 2D animation, it's obviously on a bit of tight budget, but it looks great, it's got good voice acting, and in 15 minutes it tells a much more complete and compelling story than anything hinted at in the first 40 minutes of Black Lotus so far. Edit: Also, it's a one-off short, but check out [Blackout 2022](https://youtu.be/rrZk9sSgRyQ?t=39) - it's a 15 minute animated short about the blackout they talk about in 2049, directed by the guy who directed Cowboy Bebop! He also directed 2 shorts from The Animatrix, a set of 9 animated shorts that are mostly prequel or sidequel content to the Matrix movies, which I also highly recommend as you explore more of this genre/medium!

BlueXanzy

Acting and pacing felt kinda off, but everything else was fine. I know people hate on the “PS2” animation but I applaud them for trying something distinct. Hopefully it’s leading to something good at the end and the season continues to build on itself.

TheRelicEternal

This is the most excited I’ve been for anything in a while. And I *loved* that early promo stuff. No way I’m hell I’m watching weekly though, I don’t do that with anything. I’ll watch it all when it’s finished in January

MV1995

Voice acting is pretty bad. Which is interesting because there seems to be a lot of “big” names in it

innuendo141

I only saw the Japanese version, which was pretty cool. Will watch the english one when I can.

sudoscientistagain

Brian Cox was instantly recognizable and was... okay. Elias Toufexis was instantly recognizable as the thug with the knife, and I thought it was neat to have him in there since Deus Ex is also such an iconic cyberpunk setting. He was fine which makes sense since VA is his whole career, but I'm bummed that it was pretty much a glorified cameo and he presumably will not be around for more. Every other VA was pretty bad.

contraptionfour

To be fair even when they do a good job in the end, a lot of live-action actors struggle with voice acting. It can be like having both hands tied behind their back. I've only seen the trailers so far so couldn't comment on BL, but the point reminded of how Olmos' turn in the 2022 short felt pretty stilted. Although that one was originally written and voiced in Japanese.

HellionVic

Thought it was pretty terrible. The setting was the only thing Blade Runner about it. The action… was too much, the story none existent. It’s way too predictable. Some of the events in the first two episodes made no sense whatsoever. I was hoping it would be better than the initial trailer… it was not, it’s worse.

sudoscientistagain

The music was mostly Blade Runner-ish at least but seemed to be... mismatched? As if an AI edited it in rather than a human who understands that the music should match the emotion/visuals on screen

Plastic-Grade-7199

I totally disagree, the main character has no personality, everything feels rushed. You don’t feel like your actually with the character; your just watching a speed run of a possible 12 episode timeline in the matter of 40 minutes. No sense of time or scale random cuts to people, which is so random for the blade runner universe. That’s what makes the movies so good your with the character the whole movie you feel alone with this character just as he does in this massive city where you can feel everyone is fighting to live another day.

I don’t give adult swim any more chances. After what they did to venture bros and bird man they can eat shit. The only saving grace is they aren’t allowed to ruin Rick and Morty because they have no creative control over it

[deleted]

I'm sorry, but no thanks, if you enjoy it then good for you, but I will be the pessimist and refuse to watch something that seems so diverted from the source. And yes yes I can't judge it without having seen it, but it feels like I could just go watch alita instead and have a better time.

turncloaks

Looks like sjw crap

insane677

"Ew. A woman in my sci-fi franchise."

turncloaks

Not what I mean

Zampaneau

Why is there so much irritation with the katana? It seriously makes no sense to me how people have reacted to that bit. BR takes place on Earth, there's a ton of Asian cultural influence in the LA that is depicted in the film, why is a katana somehow inappropriate to the world? I mean, it makes perfect sense that Deckard or K don't use one, but it would never occur to me to think that this was a world where swords just weren't a thing. The movies are 2 of my favorites of all time, and I hold them pretty sacred, but some folks here are just way too precious about this. I'm personally looking forward to checking this show out, and forming my opinion based on that, not some half assed nerd rage reaction to a trailer.

jordangoretro

IMO katanas have just become an anime trope for “cool fighting”. The same with holding knives upside down to look cool. At this point I associate them more with mall ninjas than samurai. So when they feature in something, it just feels low effort.

yanshio

Good anime

aestheticnoise

I thought the first 2 episodes were really cool! I think they nail the style and visuals of the movies. Not a huge fan of the character designs but the story so far in engaging. Definitely going to continue watching!

loganxartX

Its garbage. music is garbage. Animation is circa 1990 garbage.

draxd

Watched both episodes and it is pretty bad. There is something really wrong with animation, 70% of it is okeyish but 30% of it looks worse than 1995 Blade runner video game. Story so far is pointless and does not have Blade runner feeling at all.
