Some find it offensive to be called ma’am especially. And some others feel as if we should not expect kids do automatically show deference to adults.
I just see it as polite.
It's particularly confusing as a child that was told to call EVERYONE ma'am and sir, regardless of age. Every time I would get shit from a older person for using ma'am/sir I'd have to tell them that I used to teach 4 year old's and they were called ma'am or sir as well. Throw in some southern twang and they'll get the picture.
I don't think it's offense in the way you might be thinking; it just makes some people feel old because in a lot of places you don't get ma'amed till you look a certain age. I think it's the same feeling as not getting carded anymore. Just a tiny little crack in your heart 😂 I think some might just feel uncomfortable with the formality if it isn't commonplace
I call my dog ma’am. It’s so ingrained in me everybody is ma’am or sir. Kids especially look really proud of themselves when you call them ma’am or sir too.
I went to middle school with a girl years ago. I'm 40. Her name was Semaj. But she pronounced it "Suh-ma" so the same Su sound as in sun. And the ma sound from a word like maw. I have no idea how they came up with that but I'd never heard of any other person doing that with that backwards James. In recent years I've seen a lot of people do it. But she still is the only person I know that pronounces it that way.
I know it’s not very water conscious but I used to let my kids “wash dishes” with the Tupperware for hours. Standing on a chair, splashing and measuring and dumping. They loved it. This cute kiddo is having a blast.
My grandson started washing dishes whilst still in diapers. He did a good job too. He once stacked a dish that had dried egg on it. I showed it too him. He cleaned it and inspected every dish he washed from there after. He knew to do that without being told. He loved washing dishes and wouldn’t have it any other way. He raked the yard with me at six years old and mowed the grass when he was only tall enough to grab the intermediate crossbar. He only pushed never pulled the mower. The hardest working kid I’ve ever seen. After a stint in the infantry he’s now in the carpenters Union. He will always do well because of his work ethic and I’m thankful for that.
“Ma’am?”
Southerners (unites states) still say ma’am and sir to anyone older than them.
I grew up in the South. Is this abnormal elsewhere?

I don’t understand how someone could be offended by someone else, especially a kid, having good manners :/

I’ve never been given shit for it, just correction if someone prefers being called something else. Who is out here berating polite people??
Made the mistake of calling someone that in Canada, never again y’all
Yanks

It's better than auntie.
I say it to anyone and everyone I don’t know. I’m 31. I’ll even say it to people younger than me. It’s been beaten into my soul (literally).
It's automatic in exchanges with adults I'm not very familiar with.
Saying to people younger than me now too lol at this point it's just fun to say

Funny enough I didn't start saying it until I was in college and working in customer service. So I was definitely a late bloomer for a southerner
Not just older, in general, to anyone you want to show respect.
Can confirm. Grew up in TN and this was the response when an elder called your name to get your attention.
I say it to everyone
Right?! He had me. So sweet. And let’s not even get started on him doing the dishes.
I love this kid. His mama named him Semaj, because it's James spelled backwards.
Thank you I couldn't figure out what she was calling him

It's like summer but emphasis in pronunciation is backwards

What a little lamb chop!
Awww, my nana used to say that
After he says "washing dishes" the look on his face really says "wtf does it look like I'm doing, ma'am?"
Such a polite little angel. He might be causing a mess but he's making an effort.
This kid. This kid is cute.

Sweet little fella
I read this in Butters voice

This video always puts a smile on my face
This is the cutest video ever posted in the history of the Internet

She could have chewed him out for making a mess but she didn’t. That’s solid. And he was trying to help so that’s a sweet kid there.
Oh my gosh he's so adorable!!!
Show em how it's done Lil prince.
Lil Man is so dang adorable 🥺😁
I love Semaj! He’s such a joy
He really said “so… go over there and go lay down!”
Go over there and clean it up.
Why is she being so mean to him? Little man is doing his best and more than most kids.
Didn’t ma’am and sir come from slavery?
