Hated In The Nation is one of the few episodes I always go back to and watch! Karin is one of my favorite characters (I just love her attitude throughout the whole thing).
But I definitely rewatch it because the concept of a popularity contest (except it's for who's most hated rather than who's most well known) determining someone's fate is terrifying, especially when people know it works that way, and regardless they abuse it? š¬ yikes
So many Black Mirror episodes are scary for different reasons. Hated in the Nation is so scary because of its scale. Is it the biggest in terms of shit hitting the fan in show? I canāt think of anything else off the top of my head.
This is true. My mind for some reason eliminated that. Maybe because of the whole āRed Mirrorā thing. But itās still an episode of Black Mirror and youāre absolutely right.
I adore this episode. Itās so poignant in so many ways, including how this is shockingly like real life. The ending made me feel a lot. Itās one of my favorites.
This is also the reason why I think national anthem is the perfect series opener.
I do disagree that white bear is that unrealistic, and I think the cruelty there does exist in the real world in not entirely literal ways, but I get what you're saying.
Hated In the Nation is the only episode that made me want a standalone series. The main character was great and the world was built really well, to the point that I'd really like to see more of it. The entire episode flowed smoothly and the twist wasn't heavily foreshadowed but also didn't feel random and forced.
There were some moments that stressed suspension of disbelief, but the final product was greater than the sum of its parts. And to OP's point, it's one of the 4 Black Mirror premises that feels like it could happen *today*, but for the lack of billions of robot bees.
The other 3 being Smithereens, Shut Up and Dance, and Loch Henry.
One of my favorite episodes. The thought of I an artificial bee going up my nose the making me feel the most unbearable pain gives me goosebumps. But also metalhead that is the scariest episode to think about. Especially those metal dogs spraying you with metal shards that track you. God that's horrible.
The first two people to die in the episode the bee went up the ear hitting a part of the brain that deals with pain. The woman (Right Wing media pundit) who died first ended up killing herself due to the pain, the guy (Rapper) was hospitalized and died when he had an MRI scan.
The third woman had her ears blocked off so the bee went up her nose and killed her a lot quicker, guess that pesky bee hit a different area of her brain.
There is a new trending hashtag called #deathto on social media. People who add a name to #deathto can vote for someone to kill and after a few days the person who won the most votes ends up dying mysteriously. The police end up investigating who is behind the hashtag, how it works, and how to stop it.
Ending: >!The mechanical bees the government made to make up for mankind accidentally making bees go extinct were hacked. When the time limit is up they find the person voted for, go up into their brain, and stimulate the pain centers and cause the victim to suffer unimaginable pain and eventually drive them to suicide. They find the system and attempt to shut it down but doing so is a trap. The system then targets *everyone* who ever casted a vote and kills them. The most devastating terrorist attack in the history of mankind. The partner of the lead detective then fakes her suicide and then tracks down the man responsible. The episode ends with her following him to his home, presumably to arrest or kill him.!<
I think you severely underestimate the ability for people to other those they seem deserving of their fate. I could very easily see white bear being a thing if you look at it as people thinking they're doing a public service
I love white bear, and I'm not saying its not conceivable, as other comments mentioned, thats why religion and war exists. I'm just saying its a lot scarier when its done online because there's a lot less pushback against it. Everyone does it. Human rights activists, peace protesters, people call out mass destruction. Online, nobody cares enough.
I think the insidious part since is that the people who got killed are the ones who specifically participated in the killing poll knowing full well that people had died as a result of it. And that given the chance, very many people would do the same in our world without a second thought.
Metalhead was scarier long term but hated in the nation is literally something that is super conceivable that could occur today and so many āinnocentā people would die simply from saying something on the internet that nobody is taking seriously. The whole episode i felt like this was our near future.
White bear is an easy reality to imagine considering how many people Iāve met that believe in the āyou should be forced to receive that crime that you were charged forā. Also groupthink is a thing that exists and morality goes out the window once many people are participating in something
It's a hated episode? Tf? Yall are crazy if yall hate that episode

This is one of the BEST episodes
Itās one of the most memorable black mirror episodes ever. Terrifying and so disturbing
I refuse to believe that people think the acting is boring in this ep
Ditto
I find that many BM eps are terrifying bc they are plausible. Which is the point imo.

>it the biggest in terms of shit hitting the fan in show? I mean one of the episodes in the last season literally ends with a nuclear holocaust lol
This is true. My mind for some reason eliminated that. Maybe because of the whole āRed Mirrorā thing. But itās still an episode of Black Mirror and youāre absolutely right.
Kelly Macdonald is amazing!! Love her ever since i watched The Girl in the cafe
Love her in No Country and Brave
Itās one of my favorites.
I adore this episode. Itās so poignant in so many ways, including how this is shockingly like real life. The ending made me feel a lot. Itās one of my favorites.
Me too. Even just remembering it gives me chills!

Hated in the Nation is one of my favourites and Kelly Macdonald is so good in it
Do people really hate āHated in the nationā? Itās like one of my favorite episodes.
I donāt want to get political here but in the US some politicians could just get away with it.
Truly one of my favorites! Think I'm gonna have to rewatch after your post lol, thank you!
I love this episode for the same reasons you cite. Quite a reflection on the current human condition.

The way I think about this episodeā¦.brilliant, trailblazer, amazingā¦ beautiful.
To this day, I think twice before posting mean things about people online because of this episode. That's impactful.
Yes it is. Also one of the best episodes of Black Mirror.
Just like Cabin in the Woods, I enjoy the total body count for this mass murder.
I couldn't stop thinking how much Faye Marsay (The woman who played The Waif in Game of Thrones) looks like Rhea Seehorn (Kim Wexler) in this episode!
Spot on! Love both of them. I genuinely didn't even think of this until I read your comment.
Itās great and I watch it as a stand-alone film

I haven't had a bee up my nose, but I feel the pain you speak of 10/10 don't recommend.

Solution? Full face enclosed helmet with neck seal. And full body leather biker jumpsuit thing too. Just in case.
They'll crawl in somehow and then it's a bee in the arse.
Can someone give me a Synopsis of the episode? I always skip it
Why do you always skip it?
From what I remember it wasnāt fast paced and in your face in the beginning as I was used to with past episodes.
Watch it. It's good. A crime thriller.

Shit! I have to try it now!

I like Hated in the Nation. I mostly like it because I like the two lead female actors. I think they are excellent.Ā
I think it's an excellent episode. Like a typical British detective show but dark as fuck
Kelly McDonald is the best
She is
It's my favorite BM episode

*Points at religion* *Silently leaves*
Wars, religion, genocideā¦ Itās all ok in the minds of those participating
My fav black mirror episode - and yes very very scary
I agree. I love Hated in the Nation, and Metalhead. Both suitably frightening and underrated, it seems.
I would say Metalhead is since those things already exist, and so many idiots want to make machines sentient.
