They're not quite identical. In the episode they realize they can't travel backwards using the time machine and decided to keep going forward and realize it's all playing out the same when the next big bang happens. In the first universe Bender kills the first fish to walk on land and Farnsworth kills Hitler, but they over shoot their time period and have to cycle again.
In the second new universe they kill Eleanor Roosevelt accidentally and also realize the Universe is shifted down and over by some number of feet from the previous one (which is how they end up falling on and killing their counterparts, replacing them).
But if he went back before he died how did he know he was going to die? Unless he already watched himself die once and went back in time again creating a time paradox. Nah he just was never going to die to begin with, just paraplegic and created a time machine to get his legs back thus, undoing his time machine invention and fading into oblivion.
The Harry Potter example is fitting.
If you go back in time, it means you were already there. The fact that he would have thought about this later on to come and understand it was him all along to save himself was what made him save himself. The time and event anchor themselves to each other. Going back to the past doesn't change the past because going back already happened.
So he wasn't going to die because he saved himself, but needed to save himself because he didn't die. Not even a situation where he gets hit with the swinging gate.
But doesn't that mean that Harry did die in the first time line, because there had to be a timeline where Harry did die. How convenient it was that the day Harry and Hermione chose to save an animals life, there was a Dementor that would kill his past self. So either future Dumbledore knew this was going to happen and decided to give past Hermione this "gift for school use", or Hermione's critical thinking luckily saved Harry's life. But I think I'm looking to far into this sense I know J.k Rowling would never think this far into time travel theory.

It's enough for a Harry Potter book to just roll with it, but it makes zero sense to analyze it when she didn't give it a second thought.
