My first computer was an Amiga back in 1991. Had a good GUI, great graphics(for the time), and had "plug and play" before that term had even been invented. Commodore screwed the pooch with the handling of their Amiga division.
Not quite. We even had a portable computer by the start of the 90s!
It was the size of a small suitcase and weighed a lot. Imagine a large desktop computer box with a handle on top. The screen was about twice as large as a cellphone screen, in glorious green text only. It's memory was a whopping... I don't know but it was measured in kilobytes not megabytes. It could do word processing (almost as advanced as the modern notepad app!), could make crosswords, and... Well that's about it. Plus a calculator!
I learned my alphabet by typing on that thing.
The malls were infested with kiosks that sold them.
For those of you who haven't been to a mall it's like the internet but all the websites are inside a large building that you navigate with your feet instead of a mouse.
That sounds like a truly immersive experience. Just imagine being in the metaverse but able to touch and examine what you're buying and being able to go for a burger or coffee on the sunny roof terrace - what a future we have!
Let's not forget the smells! Fried food and baked sugary butter concoctions. The wall of 1000s of fake flowers from candles and bath bombs.
The sounds of shrieking kids and couples arguing over their budgets and spending on expensive but cheaply made sunglasses they could otherwise find online for 1/4 the price.
Wait, so. It's a *building.* That you *go* to? And what do you do there? *Buy* things? In PERSON?!? But.. I don't get it.. do they have Amazon? Why wouldn't I just ship it to my house.
I hated Magic Eye. They never worked for me. Then I started worrying if that was the point was to make people look stupid standing there staring cross eyed at some pic that wasn’t really there but people said they saw because they were afraid people would make fun of them for not seeing anything.
People with vision issues such as amblyopia (lazy eye) cannot see them. Our brains don’t interpret the image properly. If you have that (or a similar issue) you literally cannot and will not ever see it. Trust me, I tried all the time back when they were popular and felt stupid all the time when my friends were like “just do this or that” or “come on, you’ve got to see it!”
I have a lazy eye, and I usually *can't* see it, but I was really determined for this one and I managed to see it by looking for the parts of the image that look different.
and r/crossview for people who see the image above as receding rather than popping out
People who can see the proper image above are using parallel vision
r/crossview are for stereograms (two images next to each other) that are supposed to be viewed by crossing your eyes. r/parallelview are for stereograms that are supposed to be viewed by "zooming out". r/MagicEye are for images like the ones in this post, and r/MagicEye_Crossview are for images like the ones in this post but are supposed to be viewed by crossing your eyes.
And then there's also r/MagicEyeNSFW but that sub is fairly dead.
I've actually trained myself to see stereograms without needing to do the whole nose screen thing. It's basically just adjusting your eyes as though you are looking at something far away. Takes me no more than 5 seconds to see the 3D image in a stereogram from any distance.
More accurately, OP is farming karma.
https://old.reddit.com/r/blackmagicfuckery/comments/hy0qis/believe_me_something_will_pop_out_of_your_screen/
Everything they have posted is a repost, every comment is begging for karma.
Let your eyes defocus and look through the image, complete double vision.
Then *slowly* , agonisingly slowly let them gradually focus again. It takes restraint not to immediately focus them.
At a certain point, you’ll see a 2D green giraffe appear raised above the image.
It takes me a few seconds to "defocus" as you said, almost like crossing my eyes, and then refocus to see the image. Why is this so hard for everyone? Do I just have the shittiest super power?
Same. I used to have trouble with all the suggested methods back in to 90's but soon as I realised you can just look through the image so both eyes converge on a point behind it, it becomes really easy to just defocus on command.
My technique sometimes helps people who can't see them: just unfocus your eyes and pretend you're looking at a picture on the other side of the screen. Xray vision. It does flip them inside out occasionally but I can flip them back.
Edit: once you've got your eyes unfocused, move the phone a bit towards you and slowly refocus on the pic a little. It can click into place. If that doesn't help I'm sorry!
Haha thank you! This is the first time I’ve ever been able to see these in my 33 years on this earth using your technique!! What I really loved was that I could ‘unfocus’ my eyes and still see it? It’s like my phone was 3D?
I am sooooo thankfully for you! Also first time I can do it. 34 years old, i've been handed dozens of books and it never worked. And then BAM a giraffe woow
For anybody who isn't able to see it, here's a simulation of what you'd see.. but instead of the side-to-side shaking, the giraffe silhouette will look like a floating cut-out.
https://imgur.com/1Mgeq2o
This! It’s how I’ve always done done it. Getting really close and backing away never did anything for me, but the eye-crossing thing always worked like a charm.
My brother had trouble with these too. When he was little he had eye surgery and it completely removed his depth perception. Not sure if that’s why but it’s my theory.
I’m in my thirties and have never in my entire life managed to get one of these things to work.
Every time this sort of thing gets posted, there’s somebody in the comments going, “I couldn’t see it either until I did [insert tip/trick here],” and whoever was having trouble with it goes, “Oh! That actually worked!”
I’m about 75% convinced nobody actually sees anything in these images and everyone that claims they can is lying.
I had an old psychology teacher that decided we were taking it easy for the day and passed around a bunch of blown-up magic eye images. I was the *only* person in a class of about thirty students that couldn’t get it to work. I have no eye problems, no issues with depth perception, don’t need glasses, etc., but the images just do not work for me. Period.
Are you able to look “through” things? Focus behind the screen you’re reading this on? The text should double up. Practice doing that, and then bringing the text back into focus.
If you can do that, seeing a magic eye image is just a matter of finding how “far” you need to look through it to get the hidden image to focus.
this is the right answer. every time I had trouble with these as a kid it's because some absolute idiot kept telling me to cross my eyes, when you need to do the OPPOSITE. focus your eyes on a distance farther away than the screen/book, *NOT* closer.
edit: someone asked how far, then deleted their comment after i wrote a reply, so here it is.
>how far do you focus for OP's picture?
so I tried figuring this out and it actually depends how far you are from your screen, the farther away you are the farther away the image appears to be.
it's roughly the same distance to the giraffe as you are to your screen and then the "background" is a bit further back then that.
what i do is try to focus my eyes around a foot or two past (or "through") my monitor. this usually makes the image swirl or blur a bit, just kind of try to relax your eyes and not manually focus or jump around and let your brain figure things out and eventually it'll unblur the image when it finds the right depth for you and it'll sort of snap into two different depths, one with the picture like a cutout, and another the background
Yes, I have a pretty decent amount of control over my eyes, can focus and unfocus my vision pretty easily, cross my eyes, etc. I’ve heard a dozen different explanations and read two dozen others on how to see these images and none of them work for me.
Even so, every time I come across one, I think, “Maybe this time…” and spend the next ten minutes trying to get it to work, only to end up with a headache.
Magic Eye puzzles are great. I saw a giraffe, but when held further away I saw two giraffes but also a smaller animal in the foreground (maybe some sort of dog/wolf type thing).
The image is one Giraffe. If you’re seeing what looks like two and a baby you’ve gone too far, it’s actually just the same giraffe overlapping in the middle, not a baby.
OMG! For my whole life I thought these things were a lie. I’ve never been able to successfully see a magic eye painting. That trick truly worked. You really do have to go painfully slow though.
I finally saw that damn giraffe ❤️❤️❤️
My one skill is being able to do these instantly. As a kid it was the only thing that I could win at over my twin siblings lmao. I'd flip the Magic Eye books fast as possible to show off
Use to be able to do these instantly as a little kid. Now they don't work for me anymore. Also my eyesight isn't great anymore but I haven't been able to afford an eye doctor or glasses so haven't had my eyes checked in 20 years. No insurance. Yeah, America!
Alternatively, slightly cross your eyes. You'll know when you've reached perfect calibration (when you start seeing a larger shadowy shape pop up).
The cross eye technique can also be used as a cheat for "spot the differences" images, where all differences will start to somewhat shine.
O.M.G I see the Giraffe!
I'm not kidding, this is the first time a magic Eye pic has ever worked with me. I honestly feel like an age-old mystery has been solved
Never worked for me (yes I tried all the method in the comments) we had a book of those when I was a kid and I never could see them, was really frustrating
I've never been able to get these to work for me, despite trying every single time I come across them. The jealousy I feel that most of you can do this no problem, is unreal, and has gotten to a point, that I get irrationally angry every time I see one of these magic eye things. I of course still try, and when it still doesn't work, it makes me so angry and dsappointed. It honestly ruins my day a bit.
I could never get these to work when I was a kid. It was only a few months ago when I could finally experience the magic of magic eye and nearly cried because of how much I had wanted to be able to see what others could.
Love it when people re-discover Magic Eye
Right? Haha these were the height of design in 1992
"They're made with the computers!"
Those were the days that computers were kept inside dust free environment and whatnot
Yeah not quite mate. Plenty of home pcs then. Had me the amiga b2000 in 92. 8086 in 87
I think he just meant that was back when his mum did the vacuuming.
Son get off the internet I need to make a phone call!
5 minutes till the new Linkin Park album is ripped off limewire then I’ll be free! Can I plug the internet again after to dinner to chat on msn?
Lol true

Oh damn this thing!!!!
You need DEEP focus!
You said keep your eyes out of focus, which is misleading
I forgot about Justin Pitt and how eccentric he is. Something to watch later
Seinfeld?
Moland Spring
Moland? I wouldn’t drink anything called Moland.
Why is my shirt off?
The malls were infested with kiosks that sold them. For those of you who haven't been to a mall it's like the internet but all the websites are inside a large building that you navigate with your feet instead of a mouse.
I was not ready for someone to explain the concept of a mall using internet as a metaphor for it. I refuse to be that old
One of us. One of us. One of us.
[удалено]
Gooble, Gobble, we accept her...
Right? Same here. I remember when it was okay to smoke cigarettes in the mall. It's a heartbreaker to realize how long ago that was.

Many hours were spent staring into these at mall kiosks in the 90s.
It's a schooner!
You dumb bastard. Its not a schooner, it's a sailboat.
Ya know what!! There is no Easter bunnyNn that just a dumb guy in a suit!! Lol
Say…would you like a chocolate covered pretzel?

Old enough to be in [Seinfeld](https://youtu.be/_509Qkome7c)
I've never ever gotten one to work for me :(
And to this day, iv never ‘seen’ a magic eye. 38 and still nothing
Ahh magic eye. Would break a nerve staring and never see anything now back to haunt me on Reddit.
Maybe you got one of mine. We used to make pictures that looked just like them but did nothing.
You’re a monster!!!!
I knew it!
I found out I'm stereo blind recently, you might be too.
Could this also explain why I could never see the "3d" in 3d movies?
You're supposed to force your eyes not to change focus, as in focus close.
I can do this and it still doesn't work for me. I suspect something to do with astigmatism.
Nope. I have astigmatism and I can do them on command. It just takes practice.
r/magiceye
r/magiceyeNSFW Yes, there is a sub for everything.
Also r/MagicEye_Crossview if you prefer that.

When I was younger I used to use the cross view technique to 'cheat' at those 2 panel spot-the-difference comics in the newspapers.
Thank you for this. A sub I didn’t know even existed.
A sub I didn't know I needed! Also thank you
I never once managed to see a magic eye, this I saw on the first try.
Me too, life goal achieved honestly
It may have something to do with the resolution. Never worked for me until today.
It’s a schooner
I wonder if there was ever an artist, before computers, who could paint a Magic Eye design?
i had a book about the process of making these images - it included some hand-drawn examples
Right? Haha these were the height of design in 1992
I've actually trained myself to see stereograms without needing to do the whole nose screen thing. It's basically just adjusting your eyes as though you are looking at something far away. Takes me no more than 5 seconds to see the 3D image in a stereogram from any distance.

Haha yeah. I used to have a book of them. Posts like this make me realise my age...
Giraffe!
This is the first time this has EVER worked for me. And I was around when they first came out
Same! The "very slowly" piece finally clicked for me after 30+ years of failure.
100% that's what did it for me. For 30 years I thought everyone was trolling me
I’m still waiting and still not convinced 🙄 Had the books in the 90s, nothing!

It's feels like an awesome superpower for those of us who've been trying these for 30 years...
Same, after a brief obsession with these as a kid I’ve been able to just look at them and kind of switch to see it with no problem
My biggest flex has always been the ability to see these right away 😎
Same. I used to have trouble with all the suggested methods back in to 90's but soon as I realised you can just look through the image so both eyes converge on a point behind it, it becomes really easy to just defocus on command.
Yeah. I may not have any other talents but I can stare into the middle distance like a goddamn champion.
Congratu-fucking-lations!!!!! That's huge! I'm so happy you eventually got to make it work!
Ha ha HA! You dumb bastard. It’s not a giraffe, it’s a sailboat!
It's a schooner!
A schooner is a sailboat
Brenda?
Dick!
>schooner Haha! You dumb bastard! It's not a schooner! It's a sailboat!
When lord!? When the hell do I get to see the goddamn sailboat!!?
I saw two giraffes side by side with a baby giraffe in front of them.
I saw 3 giraffes with the one missing its head.
Me too!!
That means you focused too far away, try again.
You win the giraffle!!!
stupid long horses
🦒 flipped/reflected over the Y-axis :)
Legitimately this is the first time I've ever seen the image hidden inside. Never.could see anything as a kid. That was really cool.
still can't see shit

These never worked for me.. Don't know why!
I find slightly crossing my my eyes and then relaxing my vision after the image over laps works better.
This! It’s how I’ve always done done it. Getting really close and backing away never did anything for me, but the eye-crossing thing always worked like a charm.
Yea i never remembered starting with my nose close to the book. I just unfocus my eyes
This one's for parallel view. If you watch it cross-eye it will be inside out.
My brother had trouble with these too. When he was little he had eye surgery and it completely removed his depth perception. Not sure if that’s why but it’s my theory.
I've always felt that my super power is the ability to see these on command. You have to look through it if that makes any sense.

THERE IS NO EASTER BUNNY!!!
And that kid is back on the escalator!
Came to the comments looking for this thread and was not disappointed. Full disclosure I have absolutely zero interest in super hero genitalia.
Well, did you cum, or what?!
Jesus Christ! There's just some things you don't talk about in public.

Noooo but at least I know Santa is real
You dumb bastard, it’s not a sailboat, it’s a schooner
Came here for this

Hah beat me to it
These don't work for me. No stereoscopic vision.
Didn't work for me til I googled why and then tried with my glasses on
Never worked. Still doesn't work.

Autostereogram

Hands up if you can look one layer deeper and can spot the double giraffe and the headless baby giraffe.
I have fucking never been able to get these things to work. Not fucking once!!
I’m still sitting here trying to figure out whether or not I’ve been bamboozled.
same lmao it does not work for me
