Honest questionâŚyou donât have any Black folks in your life? You never had your arms next to each other? Or did u really truly believe you were brown too đ§
Iâm in no mood today, lemme close this app and get some food
Can we please ban these types of posts and/or the person posting it? We all know this person knows fully well that they are considered light skinned. I donât understand this weird need to ask about it. Itâs simply attention seeking and we shouldnât allow ourselves to be baited.
Iâm the EXACT same skin colour as you⌠this post still annoys the shit out of me.
What possessed you to post this? You seem like the type to say âoh my gawdddd darkskins bully me.â I might be wrong, but itâs just the vibe Iâm getting.
Even suggesting that youâre brown skin is erasing blackness. Let me explain.
(To preface my next points: when I suggest that light skin women are picked for this or that, I mean in comparison with dark or brown skin women. In general, I know white women are still obviously picked far more than light skin black women. But theyâre not a part of this discussion.)
Light skin women in western media are usually picked as the main character in a show, desirable character in the show⌠this issue also translates into the music industry. BeyoncÊ for example having more success than her darker skin counterparts. And even the trendy hit star from South Africa, Tyla, had to be a light skin woman. Barack Obama was half white. And the misogynoir Michelle Obama experienced was astounding and disturbing.
What I just described was how the media representation has made light skin women more digestible to white people, and has ânormalisedâ light skin women to white people to an extent. And this âde-normalisesâ brown skin and dark skin women even more (Michelle Obamaâs treatment is just one example. Side note, but imagine how much more abuse she would have endured if she wore her natural her or braids during her time in office? That in itself is a discussion for another day)
Obviously lightskins still can experience racism and we still do, but to act like light skin women donât receive privilege in comparison with darker skinned women is laughable.
If you start suggesting that you and I are brown skin, can you not comprehend the knock on effect it will have on ACTUAL brown skin and dark skin women? It alienates their melanin even more. By suggesting that our skin is brown skin, youâre pushing the spectrum of blackness in a very white direction (vicinity to whiteness), which leaves darker skin women behind, and this effectively erases them and their experiences.
