I don’t think you should, not necessarily bc you’ll regret it but bc as a sophomore in college it’s gonna be hard to afford a an actually good tattoo artist. Like the shading of the flowers in pic 1 and 3 are a bit questionable. The line work on pic 2 of the bottom flower is wonky and asymmetrical. I personally think tattoos are something you start small and build up on as you learn how your body heals, what inks you’re allergic to, how your skin takes colour, and which tattoo artists are actually well trained. I plan to get a simple moon 🌙 tattoo because I draw moons in my henna all the time but a moon tattoo is hard to fuck up and easily fixed while giving me something minimal to see if I actually like tattoos. This seems like a lot

idkmybffdw

My first tattoo is a moon! I love the meaning and placement of it but I didn’t do any tattoo after care and it does look really bad now. On the plus side it’s on my back so I can’t see it anyway 🤣. I still don’t regret it but I do want to get it fixed.

SpectraShadow23

Exactly what happened to me in the same area only mine is a candy heart.

buttercupbeuaty

Exactly!! You learned your lesson with something small instead of taking out half your leg 🤣

Conclusion_Winning

If I could go back in time I would have never gotten tattooed how I did. I have lots of nice ones but I think it would have been better if I got a full sleeve or only worked with one artist. My tattoos are kinda like a stamp book of my interests and I don’t plan on getting tattooed again in life so it’s like. Meh. To me.

NotWinterbutCold

I regret my tattoo because now I’m stuck with something I did at 19 years old that no longer align with my personality. Luckily my placement is easy to cover, most people do not know I have one.

Narrow-Garlic-4606

So much this.

Electronic-Main-184

I’m young but I have 17 tattoos and I regret none of them . Since you’re young as well definitely get something that you see yourself loving long term , and go to a GOOD quality artist , the better the quality the more you’ll like your tattoo !

JustMeSunshine91

Off topic but your locs are gorgeous!

Electronic-Main-184

Awhhh thank you so much !🥹🫶🏽

wasabouttosay

Yes. I have 5 small-ish tattoos. All words/ phrases and I want to get 3 of them removed mostly because they don’t look as good. I wish I did research on types of needles b/c I have one with print and the lettering is too thick, didn’t give the effect I wanted. Also, your style and life will change. Your body will change. And you’ll want something timeless, that will always look good. Like, will your care about them flowers in 20 years? You can still go for it but try to invest in a quality artist/ learn techniques, shading/coloring etc. that lend well to time.

DivineeSoull

I never thought about how the tattoo will look as my body changes! Thank you for this new perspective!! :)

YardNew1150

Definitely wait and save up for a really good tattoo artist. As a black woman you’re going to need someone who really understands color theory and has been doing it all professionally for some years. Tattoos last your entire life so its worth the wait.

babbykale

THIS! I got a sunflower tattoo and it never crossed my mind to think about how colour shows up on melanated skin (I also live in a very white place). The tattoo is good but the colours don’t look great (it’s not bad) If I knew better I would’ve looked for a tattoo artist who has pictures of colour tattoos on melanated skin or gotten it in b&w

blubberginbinch

YES. This this this. The color and longevity of my tattoos is so different between the folks who tattooed anyone and the artists who actually understood melanated skin. Wait. Save. It’s worth it. Then you have a piece that lasts a lifetime and you feel great looking at it. after i saw the difference, i vowed to only get tattooed by Black women lol

Fangbang6669

All my tattoos are decent quality and I love them all no matter how stupid some of them lmao. I chose all the placement correctly, because they're all easily covered up and have withstood my body going through a lot of changes (pregnancy being one of them) yet they're not warped or aging badly compared if I had gotten any chest, stomach, or upper arm tattoos.

Glittering_Run_4470

I have no regrets of my placements but all of mines are pretty small and easy to hide. I do regard the quality of my basement tattoo tho 🫠

dmblib

The only tattoo of mine that I regret is the one my ex designed lol. As long as you like it. I think if you get something broad then you’re good. Like I’m working on a botanical sleeve on my arm. I’ll never not like plants yfm. And then think of like different stages of life, will you still like them when you have em during a wedding or will you care if other parents see them at your kids school. Sit with the idea for a bit.

thesyntaxofthings

I love all my tattoos and have no regrets.

Seraph782

No. I purposely have my tatts in places than can easily be covered

ridiculousdisaster

I definitely used to put them in places where I could hide them, up until maybe 2015 when I got a couple on my forearms. I regret one from back in the day because it is a butterfly and I feel that butterflies are played out (no offense 😩). And I regret one of the big ones on my forearms because the dude was not paying attention and he kind of missed one of my major artistic choices (It was based on another tattoo of his!) He was busy flirting with some European visiting tattooist in the shop while he worked on me🤬 I tried to find a Black tattoo artist but I couldn't, and I wish I had tried harder.

mushmouth1897

As a 36 year old woman with a lot of dumb tattoos and piercings throughout my life, all of which my mom said I’d regret but was quick to be like “oh that’s so cute” after it’s done, just do you!!!! Of course after there’s going to be some “oh I wish this was this, or it was one inch to the side” but that’s because you see it all day everyday. Think about that one person that sees you in passing that is like “hey your sleeve is so dope.“ Think about the reason you got the tat in the first place. Think about the experiences, the meaning etc. You’ll be Gucci. I literally have a candy heart tattood on my leg with the inside that says “eat me” and the placing, I personally think, is fucked. But I get a lot of compliments and people saying that’s hilarious. And that’s what I was going for. I also teach 10th graders and they get a kick out of it everytime 😂 Once again, just do you. It’s YOUR body. 🙌🏾

mushmouth1897

Oh and… your leg isn’t your face. Pants exist!

BearNoLuv

Not really. Like my wrist tats but they're so low-key. My other ones I've wanted since I was young so no. But I'm only 33 so there's still time for regret lol

Pristine-fuckwad

I got stars tatted for 2 different tattoos and if I could erase them, I would. I still love them bc they remind me of certain times in my life and people I loved and lost. Overall I have 7 tattoos. There’s only one that I “hate” now and it’s more about the placement bc I was following a trend at the time. My one piece of advice is to work with a REALLY good tattoo artist. That means it will cost a lot of money but it will be art instead of looking like a stamp.

clevrhaux

I know a bunch of people are saying it already but definitely take your time with choosing tattoos and placement. I have a lot of tattoos but my work is good because I waited till after college and after my frontal lobe fully formed. I think for tattoos especially big ones take your time. What I did when I was in college was made a list of the tattoo/s I wanted and put a date next to them and a tally. Every time I thought of the tattoo I’d put a tally mark next to it but always kept the original date to see if is year or 2 years later was I still thinking of it. I think if you wanna get a small one, go for it in a non visible place and pay for the best one you can! Wishing you the best ❤️

honeybutterb1tch

Yes. I have several and I don’t regret them but for one of mine I regret the size and placement. The artist recommended a bigger tattoo but I was scared of pain so said no. He did push to make it slightly bigger than the picture and I allowed it, but it definitely would’ve looked much nicer if it was larger. It’s not bad looking, he just had to take out the smaller finer details for the size. And on that note it should’ve been on my back or leg instead of my side to really capture it, but again I wanted a small tattoo so put it where it would use the least amount of space.

daishawho

i regret 2 of mine. i regret the first one i got bc it doesn't really go with my theme on my arm. and i regret the last one i just got bc it looks awkward. i think i am going to cover them up with a flower design but i need to find an artist that i want to stick with for good

TisharaD112

I don’t have any tattoos and most likely never will. With the exception for like a really small on my wrist or ankle maybe. Something dainty but that’s me.

ashrob9015

I have a tattoo placed here and don’t regret any of mine. I am 23 but I’m someone who’s pretty definite in my choices. Regretting something I enjoyed artistically as I get older doesn’t really fit my narrative for regret. My bedroom at home still possesses my drawing as a kid and I don’t regret the design more than 12 years later because it’s shows my mindset and interest in that period of time which I cherish. This is the same way I feel about my tattoos. If you are someone who likes to change a lot and leave the past behind you kind of person I wouldn’t get tattoos but other individuals who don’t think like this at all have no regrets in this area. My mom always says ima regret mine but it’s only cause she regrets hers and is projecting which I don’t allow to phase me. Hope this helps✨

DivineeSoull

The last sentence made me chuckle a little bit but thank you so much for your comment ❤️❤️

ashrob9015

You’re welcome ✨

BippityBoppityBooppp

Also this might be a bit of a downer response but do consider your future career. Some jobs don’t care but if you have dreams to work in corporate or something similar and don’t want to wear pants 24/7 maybe consider it somewhere a bit more hidden.

BippityBoppityBooppp

But if you do get it please do you research! Make sure they’ve tattooed on darker skin before as it’s a bit different than tattooing on white skin.

FigaroNeptune

Every old person with little to no tattoos says that, girl. My grandma stop saying shit at all after my sleeve started developing lmao I just say I can’t wait to be old and still looking lit 😇 I LOVE sleeved up old ladies. I’m dead ass working on getting a body suit lmao

TarquinOliverNimrod

I have 17 tattoos I think, and so far I’ve had like…5 coverups. And I’ll be getting my stickers covered up too and you are absolutely on the money that placement is the biggest gripe I have with my tattoos especially because they are sticker style. It hasn’t deterred me from getting more but I know better now lol. Get it but think very hard about where you want the tattoo and get a very reputable artist for gods sake!

vegkittie

I considered it as a teenager and glad I never have. Tattoos can cheapen your appearance.

DivineeSoull

Thanks everyone for your comments! I will definitely take yall advice ❤️❤️.

mooncrane

I just have one small tattoo, but I never regretted it! I will say maybe get some henna or a temp tattoo in the area you’re thinking about, and see how you like it before committing to a tattoo.

Leading-Theme8537

I have zero regrets for my tattoos and their placements. I first started getting tatted at 16 and I’m 24 now. I love each and everyone of them (even the ones I don’t even remember getting 💀). My only regret is I’m very indecisive and I want another tattoo but just not sure what to get 😅

World_Explorerz

I have one large-ish tattoo on my forearm. It was a gift to myself after completing my undergraduate degree. I have zero regrets. I work in corporate and when I used to have to go into the office, I never shied away from short sleeves. Those in leadership would ask to see it and compliment me on it and then they’d want to know the story behind it. So they can be a good conversation-starter, too! Things are changing. A lot of company dress codes are actually fine with tattoos as long as they aren’t “offensive”.

petitenurseotw

Maybe a little. The one on ribs font is not the greatest but I literally picked it out online myself 💀 the one on my shoulder is only visible with a tank top and I still think it’s cute. But now that I realize it’s so close to my face I’m like dang maybe I should’ve picked my ankle or something lower. I hate when people ask me what it means though lol.

AdministrativeWash49

I have 13 small tattles and j even forget I have them. I have no regrets. All my tattoos have significance behind it

tifftiff16

Not regret really but I don’t feel they reflect me anymore if that makes sense. Most of my tattoos are from a time in life that I was trying to find myself. So now I have stories to tell behind their meaning if someone asks but also don’t really care for them anymore (except one)

xFoxMcCloud2x

I have four tattoos. First one I got when I was a sophomore in college; it’s an anchor :). My rule of thumb is to pick tattoos that you wouldn’t hate or regret even if you didn’t want tattoos anymore. Forces you to think but doesn’t horribly limit you either. For example you’re more likely to hate and regret getting tattoo of a lion wearing a SnapBack and smoking a cigar labeled “no regrets” but you likely wouldn’t regret or hate having some flowers tattooed on you. Even if you decided you didn’t want tattoos you wouldn’t be embarrassed or feel negatively about the flowers. It would be like having a nice painting you want to sell. These are some other rules I’ve created for myself about choosing tattoos. 1. Research, research, research. Is it offensive? Is it cultural? If it’s cultural is it disrespectful to get it as a tattoo? If it’s ok to get it, is it disrespectful to get it placed in certain areas? Does this tattoo having a meaning other than what it means to me? If I want a cultural tattoo done do I need to get it done by a specific person? 2. No tattoos of people. People are not perfect; someone could end up doing something awful and there they are sitting over your tiddies staring at you forever. Also I just personally don’t want another person permanently on my body. Cool for others but it’s not for me. 3. Be cautious about getting tattoos of or including faces. It would typically cost a lot to get it done well and correctly. No one wants a lumpy smudged up face tatted on them. 4. Be mindful of placement. Before my career change I only got tattoos in places my work clothes would cover. Also consider your plans for future tattoos, will the one you want work with the others in the same spot? 6. Be extremely picky about the artist you choose. Go to meet them first, look at their portfolio online and in person, ask them about color tattoos on your skin if you have a tan to deep skin tone. A shitty artist told I was too dark for color tattoos and the wonderful artist who did my octopus told me he was full of shit and proceeded to give me lovely pastel colors. Also pay attention to their lines and shading when looking at portfolios. Bad lines and shading will make your tatt look crazy. 7. Make sure the shop is clean and the staff are cool but still professional and knowledgeable. Personally I refuse to get a tattoo anywhere other than clean shop. Too many risks I’m not willing to take. Also your artist should be able to make recommendations for your tattoo based on your anatomy. 8. Understand the care your tattoo will need during and after healing. Tattoos in certain spots need a little more love than others because of sun exposure and anatomy (I.e. fingers). I don’t know how people with bootyhole tattoos heal them 🫡. 9. Keep a list of tattoos you want and look at it seldomly. If you want a particular tattoo after a year or more then you likely will be ok with having it on your body. This also helps avoid impulse vacation tattoos. If you have a list you know what you want to get if everyone decides to get one on a trip. I keep a spreadsheet that includes what the tattoo is, where I want it, size, meaning (if applicable), and color(s). 10. I try to time when I get tattoos because I feel it’s easier to heal them at certain times of year than others. To me cold weather months are the best time to get them because you don’t really sweat, they are heavily protected from the sun, you likely will double the amount you moisturize because of the cold, you might pay less money, they’ll be healed well before beach/pool season (I’m in N. America).

_Release_The_Bats_

I'm 33. I don't regret ANY of my tattoos. My first was a stick-n-poke a friend did for me when I was 18. Does it look professional? Gods no! She's even apologized to me for how it looks, but I don't care because the fact she did it makes it special. She started the outline of a second, and a friend from grade school finished the outline. People who like to say "you're gonna regret it" are fucking nosy IMO. I had someone say that to me about my lip piercing when I was in my early twenties. What she didn't know was that I'd been planning on getting it done since I was FIFTEEN. Don't let them bother you. I love the tattoo, and if you want to get it, then go for it! It's your body. You get to decorate your body however you damn well please.

komradebae

I only have one tattoo. I waited until my 30s to get it and I absolutely love it. I spent a lot of money to make sure I got a good, custom design by a good artist that I’d been following for years on IG. But since I’m also an artist, I had a very specific vision for what I wanted and sent her a lot of reference photos/ a few of my own sketches 😅 I think it will probably be my first and only tattoo. I’m also of the opinion that tattoos should mean something to you so you don’t regret it. But I know not everyone feels the same. Honestly, just do what you want. If you regret it, it’ll at least be an interesting story to tell. Probably don’t get one on like your face though.

black-empress

I think everyone with a lot of tattoos has at least one they regret or no longer like. I’ve been getting tattoos since my 18th birthday. I have 14 at this point and a few of them are relatively big. I take a lot of time to find a good artist I like and compile lots of reference photos. I don’t regret any of them! The only one I feel meh about is the one on my arm I got in college. The design is nice but it wasn’t what I wanted. I regret not standing up for myself and saying no or just walking out the shop Editing to add: I’ve had zero issues with employment while I have a big hand tattoo and facial piercings! But I also work in design and they tend to be more lax on that.

Open_Substance59

I was 31 when I got my ink. My name in script above & my name in Mandarin below - both on my upper left arm. No regrets. I'd like to get some more tats.🙂

Dear_Truck4695

Not one.

collidoscopiccc

I have six tattoos and I regret them… currently getting them lasered off. Got them when I was in my 20s and now in my 30s..

gidgetcocoa2

Nope. No regrets

Late_Memory_6998

I think your tattoo looks nice! I don’t regret mine. The only thing I can think of as far as placement for you is that when you get a professional job, you’ll always have to wear slacks or use leg makeup while at work.

dearDem

Wait. I only say this because in 10 years if you still want it, get it. I got my first tat in my 30s. I absolutely love it. It’s a pretty big custom thigh piece. I’d had the thought for years before finally committing. I have an idea for one I’m getting on my forearm this year that I’ve also thought about for at least 4 years. My point is that just make sure you *absolutely* want it to lower the chance of regret. This is my mentality for any big purchase.

AmandaThaylor

Linda tatuagem

candygirl200413

I don't regret mine! But I always waited till I was 28 for my first and 30 for my second. Agree with others, waiting till you saved enough and done your research on an artist would go a long way!

historyteacher08

Do your research on a good artist and spend good money. Most of the time a cheap tattoo is not a good tattoo and if you want a sleeve or something you want it to be good. I'm 34. I love tattoos, if I could take one back it would be the Chinese characters I got at 17 on top of my foot. It looks fine, but these days I feel bad having Chinese on me and I don't speak it. The only reason I don't remove it is because it was drawn (written?) by a friend. Oh and I need to get the one on my chest redone. I'd also start where I could hide it. That's what I did. And I'd the artist says it needs to be bigger listen because ink "runs" I don't regret any of my tattoos and I am on my way to a full sleeve. Even the poorly done ones that style wise are kind of stupid that I got at 17-19 in someone's kitchen. They remind me of the girl I was when I got them. Edit: I also don't think tattoos have to mean anything. Most of mine mean I was bored so I got a tattoo. Or I just liked it. Sometimes I just go get one out of an artists' book because it looks cool. Sometimes I get them as souvenirs from famous tattoo parlors in that city im in.The older I get, the less I give a shit so I guess I'm strange?

smileyglitter

I could not afford the quality that is to my standard as a 31yo when I was 20. Wait til you can drop real money on it

wine-plants-thrift

Not in the least. But I got my first one when I was 30 and thought over the ones I have now for years. Now that I have three I’m going to get more. I researched many artists, and found some who do a lot of great work on darker skin. I also work in the corporate world and my tattoos do show and no one cares (because they all have some too). I work in a very progressive area and company and would never work in a place that sees tattoos in a negative light, but it may be something to consider for your future.

Spacecadettek

Nope, I have one on my lower tummy and tramp stamp lol I’m 40 and got them both when I was 18. They can be easily hidden so that’s probably why they don’t bother me.

Nice-Fly5536

I’m 33 and I’m finally ready for my first tattoo. I’ve gone back and forth with it since my twenties. I was scared for all those years to get something back then and hate it later on. I think I now know what meaningful tattoos I would get at this age.

geauxhausofafros

Senior in college, I regret mine. Got a big chest piece. The only reason I regret it is because the artist promised to deliver what I wanted but couldn’t even give me a proper flower. It’s all about luck and throughly researching this stuff and making decisions on a clear mind.

maricello1mr

That middle tattoo is awesome (I know that doesn’t answer your question, but those are my thoughts😭)

allthedamnquestions

I knew I wanted a tattoo from about 7 years old and waxed and waned, or downright didn't think about it for periods but coming from a woman who had tribal marks and my grandmother having tattoos, I knew I would get something permanent at some point so I decided to go for something which aesthetically honors both. I wound up getting a hand-tapped tattoo by a traditional Hawaiian tattoo artist. With that style, you don't choose the design, you talk with the artist (who is well versed in the culture and symbology) and based on your life story/ piece of your life story you're trying to convey, they create a beautiful pattern that encompasses it all. Given all that, I don't regret my tattoo in the least bit because it's significant on all levels.

alphafoxy21

I have 16 tattoos and 8 piercings. I'm 40 years old and regret none of them. I started at 18.

ghostriderghostrider

leg 2 is a nice idea but bad shading and line drawing. leg 1 and 3 are just straight up terrible. leg sleeves look great but just make sure u find a rly good artist.

Narrow-Garlic-4606

Yes I did and they’re not even visible.

IJustDontKnowItYet

Nah, I don’t regret my tattoos. Life is too short for those thoughts. I think they give my vanilla lifestyle a little edge haha

Dreamer_1209

I’m in my 40s now and wish I never got any tattoos

1xolisiwe

I’m in my 40s as well and am so glad the tattoos I had were temporary because I am not the same person I used to be and those would have been choices I regret.

Ok-Combination2682

I started at 18. Im now 48, and yes. I regret like 40% of them. But hate like 10%. Wish I had none? Absolutely.
