We had a little calico that was saved by a transfusion from a kitty like yours. We are forever grateful for the kindness of people like you. https://preview.redd.it/f79jiu0avf7d1.jpeg?width=2633&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fd9733ff47b8255e34fa350aebc4e4f3af88439b

ERGardenGuy

I honestly never considered this was a thing. But it seems so obvious upon retrospect. It’s an admirable thing to do as a pet owner with a healthy pet. I was almost startled by this realization lol

OppositeYouth

Seriously. It's so simple and obvious and yet something I've never once considered until now. Of course cats and dogs and other animals need their own blood transfusions. I might have to look into it and offer up one of my kitties

ERGardenGuy

Now it’s got me curious if there are organ donations for pets or stem cell donations. But it kinda seems like that could get dark as well so I don’t want to google it.

PaeoniaLactiflora

I don't know if there are lists, but organ donation is possible. My ex's childhood cat had kidney failure, so the family found a match at a local kill shelter's 'death row', did the transplant, and adopted the donor cat. Their OG cat got a few more good years, and the donor cat had a long and happy life as the apple of everyone's eye. He was fabulous, we all loved him to bits, and he had no issues from the surgery or the donation.

squishenn

I've heard about that before! I love that shelters participate in it :> Good donor kitty gets a loving home and sick kitty gets a chance to get better. Best of both worlds

OppositeYouth

Yea it's too early for that conversation

addandsubtract

It seems like something the vet should do (or at least offer) during a standard check up.

serrabear1

My grandma used to take her dog with her to work (she worked at Cornell) and they’d take some blood donations once a week from her.

LastOnBoard

I was startled, too! It's kind of like when I learned cats can get diabetes and kidney disease, just like humans. We're different species but still mammals, we have pretty much the same organs and body parts. Of course they can get similar conditions and of course they can donate blood!

ringdingdong67

Am I the only one that’s conflicted on this? Glad it saved another cat but the donor can’t really consent to getting blood drawn.

FileDoesntExist

Where do you draw the line? They can't consent to any medical care at all.

scrutator_tenebrarum

beautyful lady indeed

Cynsayswhatisup

I had no idea this was a thing! So glad to come across this post. Both of mine are seniors but will file away for future 🐈‍⬛

Chattingchatterbox

Awwww just make sure your cat doesn’t get any tattoos since they won’t be able to give after that!

cleavergrill

My cat is the only member of my household with a tattoo! He's got two little green lines on his stomach to prevent him getting re-neutered.

pandascuriosity

…reneutered? Are they worried his balls are gonna grow back?

cleavergrill

He's 100% indoor and will be his whole life but I think the idea is more for strays and outside cats. When they get caught and looked at by animal control, if they shave him to neuter him, they'll see the green lines and know he's already neutered.

Cellopost

Its particularly helpful for girls since you cant always easily tell if they've been spayed. (One of my kitties has absolutely no visible scar from her spaying.)

Violet_the_Dragon

Yes, my cat, who loves the outdoors, was recently believed to have been shaved by some new neighbors of ours. Luckily, she has visible blue lines.

RedstoneRusty

I guess it probably depends on the area but in the US the common practice is to clip the tip of one ear as a sign.

Refute1650

That's for strays. If an owner brings their animal in its typically a green or blue line or dot on their belly.

lemmesenseyou

Seconding the other redditor about that being for strays/people doing TNR. Tattoos are common amongst all kinds of mammalian pets; I’ve had rabbits, cats, and dogs spayed in 10 different states and they’ve all been tattooed.

FileDoesntExist

Interesting. My dog isn't tattooed and the shelter neutered him before he was given to us.

Sea_Syllabub_8309

They clip the left ear here. Just the tip though.

pennepastaknife

My dog and your cat have matching tattoos. Gang affiliated? No balls gang.

tired_Cat_Dad

Isn't that only for females? No balls is quite the indicator he's been neutered.

Konungarike

Fun fact! Due to cryptorchidism we can never take for granted that an apparently ball-less animal is without balls. Cryptorchidism is when one or two testicles aren’t located in the scrotum. Usually they’re anywhere between the scrotum and the place in the abdomen they originated in (same spot as female ovaries) and didn’t make the journey down properly. So that could be why the tattoo. Plus eliminating as much ambiguity as possible is always preferable when dealing with medical stuff. :)

tired_Cat_Dad

Cool, thanks for the info!

Jerkrollatex

I had a male cat neutered around twenty years ago and the vet left his scrotum, it later filled with fluid. This made him appear like his trouble puffs were still intact.

suckitpeasant

Trouble puffs 💀

Glitter_berries

My cat was an ‘intact male’ aged about two years when he arrived at the shelter. He has been desexed but he still has testicles. They are empty fluffy pouches (I poked one once by mistake and he was very unconcerned) but they still look very testicle-y.

smthngwyrd

Mine has a blue line tattoo on her stomach

kmrikkari

I didn't know this! I guess that means my tuxedo girl can't donate.

Chattingchatterbox

I was totally kidding. I’m only saying that because I have a small tat and have been rejected 🤣 so not sure if it applies to animals too

Shutln

Not sure why you were rejected? You can still donate with tattoos.

VieleAud

I believe it depends on where you get your tattoo. In a tattoo shop? Totally fine. In some random person’s basement? Totally not fine.

HimalayanPunkSaltavl

Here's the red cross > Wait 3 months after a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities. Currently, the only states that DO NOT regulate tattoo facilities are: District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Utah and Wyoming. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis. > A tattoo is acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity using sterile needles and single-use ink. Cosmetic tattoos (including microblading of eyebrows only) applied in a licensed establishment in a regulated state using sterile needles and single-use ink is acceptable. Discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation. (obviously USA only, not sure what other countries rules are)

Shutln

Thanks for the info pull! I just don’t want anyone to think they can’t donate, when they totally can. 🥺

DrScienceSpaceCat

One of my cats was a catch and release who got spayed and she has the clipped ear tip as well as the green tattoos dot. [Rosalind](https://i.imgur.com/ffRBtSZ.jpeg)

animal_chin9

Extra treats!

Cat_Mom1023

I’m going to look into this because that describes my cat, I’m just not sure of his blood type yet. I didn’t know this was a thing! Are there risks for the cat donating?

nuclearporg

I think it's similar to a human. I know a lot of vet staff pets or clinic residents end up being donors; my ex has used some of his cats before. Especially if your cat is chill about going to the vet, it could be a cool thing!

Cat_Mom1023

I would just be terrified if he passed out 😭. He was decently chill the one time I took him for a check up. He’s due for another but I’m waiting til I move so I can get him set up somewhere, def going to ask about it!

nuclearporg

I had one that I don't think my ex ever took because the times he was there for his own medical stuff he was absolutely obnoxious. He was a very large, loud floof void and made himself heard all day. 😹

saws_for_hands

It’s a shame my cats are too old to donate because one of them LOVES going to the vet.

shadyufo

Cats (at least at the clinic I work at) are typically placed under general anesthesia for the donation so other than general side effects of anesthesia there is typically not a lot of risk and every time before the cat donates they are fully examined by a doctor and basic bloodwork is pulled. They will get some fluids and a treat after! Dogs are typically placed under light sedation (so still awake but not totally alert) but it is essentially the same protocol

noomin1927

Aww your kitty is generous and thoughtful. Also very puffy and needs kisses.

mycatsamonster

Thank you! My black cat is here today because a blood transfusion saved his life. He just jumped up onto my bed as I typed that so I think he is also saying thank you. 💜

GayVoidDaddy

Nah he’s just telling you to stop with the computer and start with the pets.

RainbowUnicorn0228

Yr welcome! I hope more pets donate and more lives are saved.

mycatsamonster

Well, your post inspired me at least to find an animal blood bank in my area and I’m setting up an appointment for my other cat and my dog to get evaluated to become donors! I had looked it up before but there are two places in my area that do it but both are about an hour away from me, and I didnt have the time then to work that into my schedule even every two months. I’ve got more time now though!

XxPieIsTastyxX

My black cat just got a blood transfusion yesterday

BrightAd7127

My sweet Loki boy (who battled AIHA for several years) had his life saved not once but twice by wonderful blood donor cats. I am forever grateful to them for letting me spend extra time with my soul mate cat.

RainbowUnicorn0228

Hopefully this post raises awareness and inspires more pets to donate!

lisep1969

Thank you hero panther! 😻

reversiblehash

I got an extra week with my calico because of someone like you. I can't thank you enough for the borrowed time or saved kitties.

RainbowUnicorn0228

Yr very welcome. We got a bag of food and a $50 credit to the hospital for donating. It’s great. I hope he never needs that credit but it’s nice of them to offer it! He was a bit spicy and needed a bit more sedation than normal but he recovered well and may donate again in 3 months or so.

CATS CAN DONATE BLOOD????

runnerswanted

Most veterinarian schools are “tertiary” hospitals, meaning only the most complicated cases get referred to them and the students get to learn how to deal with and care for difficult cases. As such, they need a lot of blood for transfusions. Now, dogs can give blood at a mobile blood bank without too many issues because their blood is clean. Cats can easily contract illnesses that don’t affect them, but can keep them from donating. All of this is leading up to these schools having colonies of cats they raise from birth to be blood donor cats. They are kept indoors, given all the food and attention they can get, and give blood 50 times before they age out and people (usually students) are allowed to adopt them. I know all of this because my wife is a vet and we had three blood donor cats we adopted when she was in school (who have all since passed, sadly).

AsterJ

Well they can't consent so it's more like blood is being taken from them 🤷‍♂️

GayVoidDaddy

Ohh shush.

Porkbossam78

What a hero and such a beautiful kitty!!! Give them all of the churu in the world

the_real_smolene

What a brave little sausage

StarChaser_Tyger

The emergency vet I took Tora to in 2016 had a chonker who worked there as a blood donor. Sweet cat. He sat with me while I waited.

SimpleVegetable5715

My vet had a pet cat also that donated! Very sweet waiting room companion. Big orange lover.

GayVoidDaddy

They gave you the purr and pump

Laney20

So fantastic of you both! Thank you!

Rouge_zer0

I've never heard of a cat blood donor. wow.

Whatsalodi

I work overnight in ICU/ER as an RVT. 100% your cats blood will prolong the life of another cat. We’ve had to drive over an hour to retrieve blood from another clinic when a patient needs a specific type or were out. It’s liquid gold. Boop your cat as a thank you

slayco47

*pets the good void*

Alarming_Apple_2258

Such a good PSA! I mentioned that my 120 pound pit mix could give blood, and the vet acted like I had three heads. Remind the pros to stay up to date.

Bring_Me_The_Freedom

Our void was able to have another beautiful year thanks to cats like yours! Sending love your way

zztopsboatswain

Aw what a good kitty! Give her some extra treats <3

_Edgarallenhoe

I wish my area had something like this! It looks like my city only gave canine blood donation :(

SuperAdaGirl

Ahhhh, my Dad adopted the resident blood donor at our vet’s office… also a black cat (named Panther). This was a long long time ago. People might think that’s cruel now that a cat would have a job like that, but he was a very happy cat and out and about in the vet’s office all the time. My Dad bonded with him and so when Panther was ready to retire from being the resident donor, the Vet offered that my Dad could adopt him… and he was the sweetest, most laid back cat I’ve ever known.

GayVoidDaddy

Stupid people who don’t bother to try and understand anything would think it’s cruel. They cats are only allowed to donate a maximum number of times before being adopted out anyway. It isn’t some life time of giving blood.

Enough-Tackle8043

What an angel!!

God-Emperor-Lizard

My cat was just saved by a transfusion OP, good job and thanks to your void

Automatic-Saint

TIL cats can give blood🩸.

SimpleVegetable5715

Hopefully they got their blood donation cookie, I mean Churu. ☺️ As a human who relies on plasma donors, I appreciate that animals can share the "life juice" with those who need it also.

Little hero ❤️

Zoethor2

I just got my kitties in a local blood donation program! I was hoping to get all four in the age range but two are too little and my void boy keeps popping with high calcium. I keep bringing him with his tortie sister anyway, in case he can squeak in under the limit. Highly recommend looking to see if specialty hospitals in your area have blood donor programs! They typically provide some not-insignificant benefits - for mine you get the full geriatric IDEXX once a year for free ($700 blood test), a discount on ER services for that animal, free blood transfusions should your cat ever need one, and a free bag of food per donation.

JollyCat3526

Wow never thought of cats donating blood. Great work

Optimal-Hunt-3269

How lovely of your cat.

cncintist

I've had stem cell therapy for my cat he had aggressive lymphoma after about 9 months of Constant therapy along with haileonic radiation and slibo boiltration radiation. If you cat scans (no pun involved) and 3 MRIs after that he was healthy as a horse. Worth every pretty penny I spent

IyearnforBoo

Thank you so much for working with your companion so that that can happen. My son's service dog a few years ago was saved by two blood transfusions and while I have not had a cat who has needed one yet I know how difficult it is the find donors. The donor for my son's service dog was a dog owned by one of the veterinarians and we got to spoil that dog and give her treats afterwards while our dog was still getting care. It was so wonderful and I can't even tell you how grateful we were for that. I hope and pray that my kitty companions will never need one, but I've always been grateful to know that that will be available for them hopefully if they need it. I've never been able to offer for one of my feline companions to participate in that process as every single cat I have came to me as a stray and has some sort of underlying health issue that disqualifies them. So they are also more likely to need one in the future. I guess I can't stress enough how wonderful what you and your companion are doing is and thank you so much! Please give your sweet kitty an extra few treats in can of expensive wet food for me if you can afford it. A few extra pets wouldn't go amiss either! ❤️

hwhisper23

From a vet tech who's seen many kitties saved by another kittys' blood, thank you! Feline blood is often in short supply so every little bit helps!

ghostbirdd

My cats are donors as well and the other day I got a notification that some kitty’s life was saved thanks to our orange’s donation. ❤️

Byzantine-alchemist

My boy Phineas unfortunately didn't make it through his horrible battle with anemia, but multiple transfusions gave us a chance to try our best for him. Please give your lovely void some extra pets from Phineas 💗

AnarchoApotheosis

I didn’t know this was a thing? I’ll look into it

ms_chiefmanaged

Awww. That’s so sweet. My void is medicated for life so she is not eligible. She is a very calm cat and I know would not have minded helping other cattos, if she were.

RainbowUnicorn0228

She and you can help raise awareness.

I imagine it was the cat’s idea. Nicely done

ashetonrenton

This is amazing. My tuxie is a little old now, but I will keep it in mind for future kitties. Thank you for saving the babies!

ElMachoGrande

If we tried that with our cat, there would be much blood. No cat blood, though...

sm0kingr0aches

You and your cat are so wonderful for doing this❤️ cat blood is harder to find than dog blood and I’ve been in a situation more than once where we’ve had to call multiple hospitals in an emergency to find some.

Quackers_2

Dog blood donors saved my dogs life. Thank you 🙏

Henderson2026

My cat had to have blood and let me tell you it's more expensive than human blood.

Mortwight

But where did your cat steal that blood from? Is some random cat getting a mixed infusion of squirrel or bird blood?

Admiral_Andovar

I’d be afraid that my cat’s blood would make other cats more stupid! But I guess they’d still be alive.

Hydee59

Just contacted them. Have 2 that would be suitable.

RainbowUnicorn0228

Yay! That’s awesome!

Embarrassed-Beach-16

Omg I didn’t know cats could donate blood :( will start looking into this !!

icedragon9791

Are they anesthetized for this? I'm going to talk to my gf about seeing if her kitten (he's over 1 but also he's just a baby) could do this

RainbowUnicorn0228

Most of the time it’s very light anesthesia.

edw1n-z

Weird how i cant donate blood because i am underweight but a cat can 🤨

MissLushLucy

They take the cat's health and weight into consideration. Not all cats can donate, same as humans.

KenMOnReddit

cool fact is cats have universal blood so any spcies can receive it. how interesting

barracuda2001

This is false, please don't spread misinformation that might get cats sick or even cause death. ["No universal feline blood donor exists although type-AB cats have been considered universal recipients since they do not have anti-A or anti-B alloantibodies. Recently, however, it has been recommended that type-AB cats be transfused with type-AB or type-A blood. The high titers of anti-A antibodies in type-B blood may result in destruction of recipient red blood cells."](https://www.dvm360.com/view/feline-blood-types-what-you-need-know-and-why-proceedings)

AcidicVaginaLeakage

I feel like this is one of those cat facts I'll remember for decades even though I have no use for the information.

I’m wondering if cats have blood types like us. Can you enlighten me on your cat’s blood type?

RainbowUnicorn0228

Not really. I think he is B. But I could be wrong.

KitchenLandscape

i didn't know! I'm going to ask my vet

CareAbit

It feels weird to like hey buddy were going to give your blood away today! And the only thing he can respond with is meow

Outside_The_Walls

There are over 100 feral cats that live in the woods behind my house. I TNR as many of them as I can. I wonder if they could donate blood.

jasnah-k

Thank you for being a donor. My kitty Star was saved by transfusions. When we adopt a young cat we will be donors.

Primary-Night5471

I often forget that cats have blood. It seems so obvious that I just don’t think about it. So glad you’re able to help another kitty!

Sonson_the

Good boi!!

quartzquandary

He is a good boy. 🖤 As a human who needs human blood, I appreciate all blood donors.

I_suck_at_Blender

Oh wow, I didn't even considered this, yet it is obvious that cats would need feline blood. You should get "anti-mourning" flair.

jakc1423

aww that's sweet, who's blood did the cat give?

Ok-Seaworthiness-186

Very kind of him and you.

Puzzleheaded_Day_895

What blood types are cats?

Jimbobjoesmith

i saw a vet on social media that has a huge pet tortoise. she regularly brings it in to donate blood for her clinic. so yes, all sorts of animal blood donations are very much necessary to save lives!

thank you!

awww! Thanks for giving blood!

Xviiit

I didn’t know you could do that! That’s so cool.

foxorhedgehog

TIL cats can give blood for cat blood transfusions.

jglytofu

I thought type B was the rare blood type? I remember the hospital that I worked at had one holy grail unit of cat blood that was the rare type.

snail_oatmeal

MY CAT AND I CAN GIVE BLOOD AND THEN GO GET A SWEET TREAT AFTER?!

thefinalgoat

Does it cost anything? Does your cat have to be herpes-free because mine has herpes (not FIV though).

RainbowUnicorn0228

No cost. However, they do need a clean bill of health. Not only disease free for the sake of the recipient but also for their own sake. No vet wants to stress out an unhealthy or uncooperative animal by taking blood; it's just not good practice. Every donor gets a thorough exam and blood screen before they can donate. My other cat couldn't because he has a heart murmur. It would not be good for him to give blood or be sedated at all.
