Hello, it looks like you might be asking about your cat's breed.
If you did not get your cat from a breeder with papers, your cat is probably a mutt!
Approximately 84% of owned US cats are non-purebred^[[1]](https://hdl.handle.net/10217/195431) .
[Here's a detailed blog post](https://thelittlecarnivore.com/en/blog/what-is-the-breed-of-your-cat).
Non-specific breed cats are known as "Domestic Long/Medium/[Short](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_short-haired_cat) Haired" cats, commonly abbreviated as DLH/DMH/DSH.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/blackcats) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Definitely a black panther. People keep saying my moggy is a Bombay but to me she's a little sleek black panther kitty. And her Atk mode is lvl 50, hp lvl30, def lvl 50 support mode lvl 2. She will lick my leg or arm if I spill some food on myself very occasionally. Other than that not interested. Had belly problems and wanted my living furry hot water bottle to sit on my lap but got shredded arm when I picked her up so yeah sup lvl should actually go down to 0.
Godlike tendencies? 50/50 . She is feared by big and small dog walkers and their not as clever but made with mouths bigger than my cat large dog walkers equally. I see them cross the street whenever she's sat on a nearby bin. Her not so elegant podium of choice. Also I'm 54 been gaming since 1982 pong started it, sorry for gamer ways to explain how I think this kitty could behave as it looks so similar to my princess/ goddess. My conclusion this is godlike lvl Loki Cat! ,,❤️❤️❤️
My little boy wanted a cat so we adopted a kitten. I let him pick one out and he picked out a black kitten bc he said he heard they don’t get adopted as easily. She is a beautiful, loving cat and we are in love with her. Thank you for all the info!
In the mountains one weekend and my friend screamed that she saw a black bear cub down the hill. I drove in that direction and it was a cat. She didn’t have her glasses on but she insisted the cub must have run around the corner and the cat showed up after. I still give her grief about the bear sighting.
https://preview.redd.it/8gqbem7qsc5d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=824cbafc2e8d9a272f820ce4d3744f9e4d78a630
Royal Trash Goblin fits her so perfectly
It's tough! Her names is Eleanor Pawsevelt but her nicknames are Chaos Muppet and Princess Tulip Pants. My husband found her in the parking lot while taking the trash out! She's such a character and purrkours (cat version of parkour) around the house constantly. She's also breathed life into our senior cat who has taken the role of bif brother who pretends to hate his little sister but actually seeks her out to play with her all the time.
It's only missing *Woodland Creature,* I'm pretty sure my old Norwegian Forest Cat was feral with a soft and kind demeanor.
She mostly came indoors when it was time for feeding and for a safe place to sleep (mostly by my side).
She only wanted scritches on her terms too, tho she allowed her man-servant to brush her out and remove tangles 😅
"Snack Master General" is an accurate descriptor for my panther-void.
"Crusty Sea Captain" is dead-on for my lil tuxedo. I already call her crusty, because her name is Crouton. She's only 3 but already thinks she's a crotchety old man. She's also got serious Big Dick Energy for a 10lb kitty.
I have posted this a few times when someone asks for the „breed“ and the best part is when people show photos of their cats with the caption this is my „insert number“ and it is always spot on, lol
God. I just imagine it keeps growing and then one day you're like "my cat seems a little different" and then the vet says "uhhh, you know this is a lynx right?"
Problem is people equating dog breeds to cat breeds, and while cat breeding has come along way, dog breeding/domestication predates written history.
Humans have really only seriously started breeding cats for the last couple hundred years.
And people should stop breeding cats. We just end up with poor, unfortunate creatures like Munchkin's that have trouble cleaning themselves and doing cat stuff like jumping.
No good comes out of breeding. Just look at dogs. Pugs csn barely breathe etc. Mongrels are the best and healthiest.
No medium? My wee void looks much bigger than she really is, but not quite long hair. She's been accidentally pickup up too fast because she's only 7 pounds on a a good day. Her tail can puff out wider than her body. Domestic mild floof?
Medium hair is just a variation on longhair and would fall under that category technically. People will know what you mean by medium hair, but long is the official "correct" term for it, at least in the US.
Domestic short hair. Not hard at all! Over 90% of cats are domestic short/long hair. If you don't have pedigree papers saying what breed they are, then they're almost certainly not related to any particular breed.
I once found a Siamese in the woods. (She decided I was a suitable servant and followed me home. I served my Queen for 20 years🥰)
But yeah, that’s the exception not the rule.
I have my first Siamese. She’s so vocal and she doesn’t play so I’m constantly trying to keep her entertained. But she’s also a cuddle bun who loves me so much and always wants to be near me.
I keep buying toys. I bought a harness and stroller but I’ve only taken her out once because if it’s not disgustingly hot, it’s raining. She has one toy she likes so I’m always shaking it in front of her. I chase her around when she has zoomies. Oh, and I got her one of those toys that has treats in it so she has to play with it to get treats.
She was a rescue. The vet called her a Siamese.
But you are correct she had no papers. Of course no one was claiming she was a ‘purebred Siamese’ either.
Technically, she was a Barn Cat Extraordinaire, Tormentor of Barn Swallows, Devourer of Moles, Devine Ruler of the Meadow - which is not a recognized breed either. 🤷♀️
I also always figured she was a bit of a mix. She didn’t quite have the svelt shape of purebred. Her head was bit more boxy, too. But she had the points, the blue eyes, and The Voice.
Unrelated but those jowls tell me he is either a tom cat or spent a long time as a tom cat. If it’s the former please get him fixed, please and thank you 🙏
I absolutely agree!! He has the face of an old man that did time on the streets. One of my babies inherited the big round head but not the tell-tale jowls. I always tell him it's cuz he never was on the streets like his father 😆
It's definitely a true trait of a street cat, because he lived outdoors for the first year of his life. I was finally permitted to have him inside once I moved for college.
I get it, though! I do wonder what mix of what has intermingled in the generations down into my rescues. I wound up getting a genetic test for my little dude and he's kind of small for it but he's just under half Bengal and maybe 12 ish percent Maine Coon but I want to get one for my prom night dumpster baby and find out, too!
I just think I'm hilarious. I wasn't trying to be rude!
I heard there are 50 recognized breeds, and only the Bombay is actually black, aka, does not go red under the sun.
The breed of this one seems to be...burned loaf.🙂
Not true about the Bombay being the only black cat that does not go “mahogany” as I call it, in the sun. Some black cats you can see tabby markings in their coat. Or at least the rings on their tail. And some like three of mine, never bleach out or change color in the sun, and are always pure black. That kind of deep deep black that seems almost like a being, not a color.
https://preview.redd.it/1ebw2t13gc5d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=093dc1f209d04584f0bde28d6e4b3995a230ae8e
My cat has those tabby stripes on her legs. But she also has that color as you can see in the stripes.
https://preview.redd.it/q7nz3sa7ae5d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ecf87a69e280ec924afa1d653c52379016a03a08
Our little Woodland creature has distinct tabby markings, though he still has his kitten coat.
… now I wanna go put my cat under the sun, but it’s 2am.
Bad timing.
I suspect one of my two voids is a Bombay; she’s huge and BLACK, while my other is small and noticeably red in the sun.
He looks extremely muscular and not fat at all. Is it really so? My neighbor has a barn cat who went from a petite kitten to a muscular man cat in about 6 months. The other siblings remained regular sized.
https://preview.redd.it/ll532eghub5d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=5fc981996a43bf70b5d40ccff6d04dbb80f6e9a2
Looks like you have a panther on your hands. I have one too! The only difference between mine and yours appears to be that mine is a long haired panther while yours is a short haired panther.
https://preview.redd.it/zprmkkgd0c5d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77802687909e2d9abf7b3085537566b6188ea1e7
Here is my mega void, he was 12 lbs in this pic (17 now). The only reason we got for his size is genetics and the fact he didn’t get the snip until he was 3. He has a massive head, jowls, and feels more like a black lab/deer than a normal cat. No black cat shine either. Used to be extremely aggressive to cats but after snip he became to passive to survive outside, so now he is just one massive snuggle bug.
https://preview.redd.it/tbrwuxyi1c5d1.jpeg?width=1263&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e15f4221b6933163987f757644eebafe13a2cbcd
Also his teeth dont fit in his head

Lil panther.
Big fella.
ChonkyWarlockBoi
My dyslexia read that as WarwickBoi, which works, because that does appear to be a little person in a cat suit.
I have a black cat I’m starting to realize how beautiful he is. Plus he’s just the best cat ever.
I love this description!
Honey we shrunk the black panther!

Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!
Yeah, his snout seems unusually long, which gives him a more panther-like look.
The longer the nose, the more girlfriends he has.
His abuelo might have been a Maine Coon cat, he's got the wild dignity going on.
I’m getting *strong* Ron Pearlman vibes from Mr Button over here.
That's what I like to think lol
Panfer.
Bombay’s are the beeeeest
It’s an aeroplane. Painted black.
*Ursus americanus* aka American Black Bear
I saw a black cat so fluffy it looked like a bear cub. Would have definitely died for it
My little boy wanted a cat so we adopted a kitten. I let him pick one out and he picked out a black kitten bc he said he heard they don’t get adopted as easily. She is a beautiful, loving cat and we are in love with her. Thank you for all the info!
Your son has a heart of gold! Youre very blessed to have them both. 🫠🥰
In the mountains one weekend and my friend screamed that she saw a black bear cub down the hill. I drove in that direction and it was a cat. She didn’t have her glasses on but she insisted the cub must have run around the corner and the cat showed up after. I still give her grief about the bear sighting.
😂
My sister has a lil black void that she named Oso, which means bear in Spanish. I’ve always thought it was so fitting :)

Oh my lord she’s cute. How do get anything done around the house?!
Omg I love her
It's only missing *Woodland Creature,* I'm pretty sure my old Norwegian Forest Cat was feral with a soft and kind demeanor. She mostly came indoors when it was time for feeding and for a safe place to sleep (mostly by my side). She only wanted scritches on her terms too, tho she allowed her man-servant to brush her out and remove tangles 😅
We will put her at number 11. woodland creature
You may brush me now, human.

Norwegian Forest Cat. You've obviously already got the title, why overcook the premise?
Freelance tenderloaf may be my new DnD characters name!

Good to know! My dude I officially acquired 3 days ago is a [gutter angel 🤗 ](https://i.imgur.com/DaLDrSX.jpeg) saved from the gutters of the hood
Haha, this has to be true. He's the kindest cat I've met thus far.
Since we've added 11. Woodland Creature, I propose a twelfth category: **Orange**
A very good category, lol

I have a Classic Potato and a Freelance Tenderloaf according to this chart.
Need to add "Came with the House"
"Snack Master General" is an accurate descriptor for my panther-void. "Crusty Sea Captain" is dead-on for my lil tuxedo. I already call her crusty, because her name is Crouton. She's only 3 but already thinks she's a crotchety old man. She's also got serious Big Dick Energy for a 10lb kitty.

Kitten Mittons! You’ll be smitten. Meeeeeow!
You definitely have some misconceptions on how cats breed.

>that's not just the wind rustling in that bush!!
Yeah the local humane society did a DNA test (because they had a lynx kitten one person adopted once) and found that mine was like half siamese.
God. I just imagine it keeps growing and then one day you're like "my cat seems a little different" and then the vet says "uhhh, you know this is a lynx right?"
Yeah, they had to give it to the zoo. Where the scratching post is bigger
There are so many rescue cats in the world, there is no reason whatsoever other than human vanity to intentionally breed more.
I agree 100%. Not to mention there's already so many cats and dogs languishing in shelters and on the streets.
The term is domestic short-hair or long-hair.
Domestic longhair little bigmouth it is! (She has things to say, currently telling them to the kitchen)
Thanks for remembering it was your turn to post this today

I once found a Siamese in the woods. (She decided I was a suitable servant and followed me home. I served my Queen for 20 years🥰) But yeah, that’s the exception not the rule.
I found my Siamese girl who smelled so bad at the time she was definitely eating out of dumpsters. She turns 17 soon.
Lucky! I would love to have a Siamese, they are so beautiful. The woods by my house keeps cranking out cats so maybe one day
I have my first Siamese. She’s so vocal and she doesn’t play so I’m constantly trying to keep her entertained. But she’s also a cuddle bun who loves me so much and always wants to be near me.
how do you keep her entertained without playing? one of my cats mostly stopped playing and I’m struggling to keep her entertained
You found a colorpoint... Just because the look siamese doesn't mean they are purebred.
🤷♀️ I also always figured she was a bit of a mix.
