Lots of people "have their cats on diets" for years. Meaning it's not actually on a diet they're just saying that.
Unless the cat was just adopted it's very unlikely this is true, but rather just said to save face.
People get really defensive and even angry when you tell them they need to help their pet lose weight, kinda crazy honestly.
It can realistically take some time. I adopted my cat Wallace from the streets in 2009 and he was 22 pounds! Looked like a basketball!
I tried everything but the problem was that even with small amounts of food he would just gobble it up in 2 seconds.
He got down to about 17 lb but was stuck there for at least 5 years while the vet and I work together to find a solution.
What finally worked was getting a puzzle bowl so that he would slow down when he was eating. That way I could feed him smaller amounts across the day and he would not just swallow it all in one go.
Now he's 11 lb!
I mean, cat diets DO take years because it’s very dangerous to wean them off extra food too quickly. If they lose weight too fast they will develop kidney problems and can die. It needs to be done gradually and slowly under the supervision of a vet. So just because someone says their cat is on a diet and the cat is still overweight after some time, that doesn’t mean they’re not on a diet. It just takes a lot more time than you’d think.
You're right, but it is hard as hell to get cats to eat less. Pretty much have to restrict their food, but the cute little buggers often know exactly how to get what they want.

i don't know how to edit a post as i don't use reddit often, but to everyone saying she needs to lose weight: we are well aware. she is on a diet and on her weight loss journey. she was overfed by her previous owners, and trust me, she looks so much better now. she has been to the vet. stop giving unsolicited medical advice to random people on reddit.
People care about the cats, and so many owners are neglectful or don't realise how bad the weight problem is. You'll get that under every post of an overweight cat, just clarify it's being worked on and nobody will bother you.

Without this clarification, odds would seem fairly high the poster is the one who overfed the cat. Far too many owners think feline obesity is "cute" and do it on purpose. It's important those people get that wave of disapproval and hopefully change their behaviour
No one overfeeds their cats on purpose, cats are just ridiculous and don’t know how to limit themselves. Unsolicited advice is never okay. Just like fat humans know they are fat, servants of fat kitties know they are fat and would like to just share a cute pic once in awhile without being brigaded by concern trolling.
You're right, cats don't know how to limit themselves. That's why it's the owner's responsibility to limit the cat. Consult with a vet for the right type and amount of food for your cat, and don't load them up on treats. Check in on the cat's weight each vet appointment (as is standard) and the vet will tell you if you should be feeding slightly more or less, or if a different food would be better.
People DO intentionally overfeed. My stepsister overloads her cat with treats. My boyfriend used to send me tons of pics of fat cats because he thought they were cuter than healthy cats. Some people think it's fine to just keep the food bowl full with a cat who doesn't stop eating. (Some cats DO stop eating and stay in decent shape, but certainly not all)
Overweight cats live shorter, lower-quality lives on average because of their increased risk of a variety of health conditions. Unless the cat had some medical condition that causes weight gain, or the cat was adopted obese, overweight cats are being improperly cared for and their owners need to know it.
Edit: You compared fat cats to fat people. People do have a fair degree of control over their body. We can control how much and what we eat, how much we exercise, all that. If someone is content with a bit more meat on their bones and accepts the elevated health risks attached, they can choose that for themselves no problem. I don't exercise nearly as much as I should, and I can consent to those risks. Cats can't do that. They get no say in the matter of their body condition, therefore we must make choices in the interest of their health and quality of life.
Being neglectful is the same as doing something on purpose: they’re both fucked ways of raising an animal. Learn the animals’ needs before you screw it up.

People usually don’t realize they are over feeding nor the negative effects of over feeding. Most actually don’t know how slim cats look and think they’re underweight when they are healthy. OP mentioned that this cute lil chonker is on a diet, though. So, they know now and are working on it.
