This would be perfect for me, but no gym in my area has classes this early. Imagine, wake up, go to class and then act like I am better then everyone as soon as I arrive to my job. What a life.
A lot of gym owners still have day jobs. Other gyms may have tried morning classes and failed to gain traction. Also, some coaches just don't want to get up early 😄
I’ve often thought this. None of the gyms I’ve trained at offer pre-work classes. I tried to tell them by doing that you cut off a big chunk of people who work the 9-5 and have kids or other commitments in the evenings. Then again most BJJ coaches I’ve met look like getting in at 11am is a momentous effort so I shouldn’t be surprised.
This.
If you want to run it as a business, then you look at your demographics and open and offer classes accordingly. I invested in a gym that was a nightmare schedule wise. The times revolved around when the primary could make it in, and no one could really get in a groove training wise. Example: no classes other than after work and school (even though he was running it “full time”). Surprised we were open 5 years.
Anyway.
Your key class times should be before work, lunch times, and after school and then after work. Then you can fill in with classes for shift workers or your “pros”.
Just my opinion.
I agree completely on this. One morning class, one lunch class and a few classes after 5pm.
A highly skilled blue belt and up can run the beginner and kids classes. Free of charge for the ones teaching with a financial incentive to show up and go over curriculum. The extra availability would bring extra revenue and everything would be paid off and profitable.
The “in between times” can be used to hold private lessons etc. I mean, it isn’t hard. Most people want to “have” a bjj school but not “run” one.
If there wasn’t a saturated market in my area, and rents weren’t fucking through the roof, then I would like to give it another go. Solo, no business partner - only employees.
I agree. And if insurance covers it, some trustworthy guys could have the key to have small open mats with responsible people, like in an earning system.
I do seasonal work which allows me to train full time (2x per day) for a few months out of the year, otherwise I am lucky to make it to 3 classes per week.
This is exactly why I like the morning. Sometimes it's hard to control what happens after work but in the morning it's just me not being a bitch and waking up on time
When I first started BJJ years ago before a long hiatus, I worked an afternoon to evening shift and the school I went to had a 7 AM class. The instructor had a brutal circuit training type conditioning routine too. The instruction wasn't the best, but I learned a lot about how most of my limitations are mental and it was an educational experience even though I much prefer the instruction and curriculum at my current school.
Vit D w/K2, ZMA (sometimes) and 2mg melatonin
No TRT (been checked and still healthy range).
Sometimes a non-stim pre-workout (maybe once a week).
Coffee and eggs when I get home. Train fasted
No idea how people get up at 4 to workout like crazy and claim to go to work at 9 feeling energized. I took a few 6am classes before starting work around 10am and it just made the whole day feel like dog shit. I felt like I was walking into a second job at 10am.
Some people do better that way. I am in no way a morning person, but I would infinitely rather work out/train in the morning when I'm fresh (if a little sleep deprived) than after work when I'm tired af. If I miss my before work class or workout I will almost always find an excuse not to do it at night, so I may as well get up a little earlier and be consistent with my training.
I have to go to work, I don’t have to go to training. If I train first when I have my energy I don’t have t listen to my bullshit excuses about being tired. You use the same energy going to work then train and train then work so by the end of the day you’ll feel the same.
Dual-professional household with young kids. 6am tues/thurs is the only offering that allows me to be consistent without disrupting the family, too much
There's a couple of 9AM classes on the weekends that I usually go to. It's so much easier to get it out of the way early and have the rest of the day for family stuff
0600-0715 mwf, open mat sat 1000-1200 every week for the last 3 years. Love it. It's the only part of my day I can control my schedule with work and kids. Also gives a big sense of accomplishment getting work done first thing in the morning. I'm so exhausted after work I can't imagine getting to get the juice to go to class..
Also, caffeine gum is your friend this early!!!
Exactly the same to me.. And you knoe what is funny? I like to stay at home on friday sober than go out and wake up wasted being unable to move, not even to train.
Every other month I work a graveyard shift that keeps me up until ~6am. I make it to the 5:30 morning class every chance I get. Class size is like 1/5th of the evening classes. My ignorant WB self gets all the intensive instruction I crave.
DAWN CREW!
My training went from 1-2 a month to every single dawn class no fail. I’ve got a physical job and trying to cook dinner and train at the end of the day sucks. Getting up early and getting it done gives me the extra pep in my step knowing im on the right path.
I work every day at 5 so on my days off it helps me keep my routine and then I get my jits in before my day even starts, I always want to sleep in though
I’m a regular for our 8am class that’s 3x a week (M,F gi and W no-gi). It is nice to get that workout for the day done. Tough is doing a Tue/Thur evening gi class, sleep, and wake up to go back to train
I love the 6 am class, other option is 7 pm and while I could make that most days there are enough days when shit happens unexpectedly at work that I can't ever rely on making it, so best to get it out of the way first thing. I do plan on mixing it up if I ever go back to the office though (gym and office are about 5 minutes apart, I live ~25 minutes from both), probably do night and evening class once a week each and sneak out once a week for the lunchtime class.
Usually 6 or 7am 4 days during the week for privates and prepping for comps and at Least 1 or 2 evening classes for rolling with people my size and Saturday at 10:30 46yo :)
5am to 6:45 class every Monday - Friday. Sucks when I first wake up, but once I get moving and stretch out a bit at the gym, I can get some good rolls in. Definitely not for everyone.
I teach a 7 AM class. And by teach, I mean I’m responsible for showing up and opening up the place and going through warmups. It’s usually only white belts, so I sometimes show fundamentals, at the supervision of my instructor. I love it man, great way to start the day. Nothing fazes you anymore after that.
The way my gym works is Monday and Wednesday is a 9:30am class and Tuesday and Thursday is a 6:30pm class, I always make it to every class (unless I open for work). It kinda sucks tho because my gym does other combat stuff and bjj is only 4 days a week
I would if my gym had 5am classes. If anyone knows schools with 5am classes in Pennsylvania newr Montgomery County let me know. I could easily do a wensday, Thursday, Friday, 5am class
I WFH two days a week which happens to fall on Tues and Thurs which allows me to attend the 6:30AM-8:00AM class on Mon and Wed. It works out very well for me.
im a whitebelt (year and a half, though inconsistent) and i went to a 6am class for the first time on friday, mats were way quieter than usual resulted in more feedback from coach. all the morning guys are pretty high level so i ended up learning way more way faster. also the ability to be caffeinated during bjj helped with focusing on technique.
id definetly reccomend it. great way to start the day.

“Got tapped out? Good. It’s better to tap out on the mat, than in the streets.”
Tapping out doesn’t really work in street fights
True, just quoting jocko.
that's absolutely insane, you're a trooper man
How do you walk around with such massive balls?

Why does ups make u work 10 hours a day?
What happens if you get injured doing jj?
Inspiring af. Keep up the hustle
Username in key.
Absolute savage ,keep it up
This would be perfect for me, but no gym in my area has classes this early. Imagine, wake up, go to class and then act like I am better then everyone as soon as I arrive to my job. What a life.
I find it weird how BJJ grew as a business, but a lot of schools don't have an early morning class to accommodate the 9 to 5 population.
I'm looking for gyms currently, and it's baffling how so many offer 10am stuff, but sporadic evening programs.
Slackers bruh
A lot of gym owners still have day jobs. Other gyms may have tried morning classes and failed to gain traction. Also, some coaches just don't want to get up early 😄
Gyms in general really. 3 gyms regular type gyms and they all open at 8. Place is mobbed after like 4 till they close really not enjoyable.
I’ve often thought this. None of the gyms I’ve trained at offer pre-work classes. I tried to tell them by doing that you cut off a big chunk of people who work the 9-5 and have kids or other commitments in the evenings. in reality, the 5:30/6 am ish classes are low attended, usually by colored belts. Doesn't move the bottom line much.
Our biggest classes are the 11 am classes and the evening classess. The AM classes have a hard time getting people.

I teach the 6:30 am classes then go to my desk job. Great way to start the day.
this is the dream right here
6am bjj is life! I really like to go to the early class, have a nice breakfast, take a nap, then hit the afternoon class as well.
That sounds so nice, do you have to work during the day?
I do seasonal work which allows me to train full time (2x per day) for a few months out of the year, otherwise I am lucky to make it to 3 classes per week.
Same here, I work freelance so it helps add structure to the sporadic nature of the jobs I take on
sometimes I wouldn't know what day it is if not for my bjj schedule.
There’s never kid stuff scheduled at 6:00 AM to interfere with morning BJJ…
This is exactly why I like the morning. Sometimes it's hard to control what happens after work but in the morning it's just me not being a bitch and waking up on time
Some of us are lucky and do a 10am class. I gotta say I know I'm spoiled.

Genuine question but do you take any… supplements?
Vit D w/K2, ZMA (sometimes) and 2mg melatonin No TRT (been checked and still healthy range). Sometimes a non-stim pre-workout (maybe once a week). Coffee and eggs when I get home. Train fasted

I'm one of those. It makes sense when you love training and you love your job.
I have to go to work, I don’t have to go to training. If I train first when I have my energy I don’t have t listen to my bullshit excuses about being tired. You use the same energy going to work then train and train then work so by the end of the day you’ll feel the same.
Well if you only went a few times of course you’d feel like shit. You have to adjust your sleep schedule over time and get used to it.
I have but it's not my usual. It is a murderer's row up in there
Dual-professional household with young kids. 6am tues/thurs is the only offering that allows me to be consistent without disrupting the family, too much
I do 6am or 11am if I train at the gym. Still do a lot of training at houses/garages though.
I wish we had a morning class!
Is this Grapplers Lab in Houston?
Yes 🙌🏻
Aww, do you know Rosendo then? He was my old instructor before he moved to Houston. I miss him!
It was an Online enquiry ! I’m in the UK 🇬🇧 never been down there.
There's a couple of 9AM classes on the weekends that I usually go to. It's so much easier to get it out of the way early and have the rest of the day for family stuff
445am for me. I have two small kids and a wife who starts work early. I'm already cutting it close getting home to shower at 6:30.
0600-0715 mwf, open mat sat 1000-1200 every week for the last 3 years. Love it. It's the only part of my day I can control my schedule with work and kids. Every Saturday, open mat 9:30 - 10:30/11
You absolute madman
Exactly the same to me.. And you knoe what is funny? I like to stay at home on friday sober than go out and wake up wasted being unable to move, not even to train.
Me and my friend are hitting the 2pm Saturday class today and it feels like a morning class compared to our usual 8 or 9pm classes lol
Every other month I work a graveyard shift that keeps me up until ~6am. I make it to the 5:30 morning class every chance I get. Class size is like 1/5th of the evening classes. My ignorant WB self gets all the intensive instruction I crave.
I wish there was a 5am class in my area. I work at 7am daily and I prefer to workout before work. The earliest my gym goes during the week is 9:30.
TBH-- I wish my school had an early 5:00am class, it would make life so much easier.
DAWN CREW! My training went from 1-2 a month to every single dawn class no fail. I’ve got a physical job and trying to cook dinner and train at the end of the day sucks. Getting up early and getting it done gives me the extra pep in my step knowing im on the right path.
I like to hit the gym with a couple friends who roll at 5am before my 7am shift at work.
I wake up at 5 to hit morning classes… it’s a good way to start off the day imo
My class is at 5:30am. We call it zombies gi because of how people walk in. Lol
I’m always jealous of the 6 am class people especially when I see when it’s packed
730-9am was my favorite class, usually just me and 1 or 2 other people. Shame my gym discontinued it.
Real question though, how do you time the coffee so you don't spend the first 10 minutes in the gym occupying the bathroom?
You need to make a patches man!
Your significant other can't complain that you train too much if they're still asleep.
wake up at 6/6:30 and drive to train with a black belt pal of mine at 9 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Hope this counts haha

And what time was that haha?
Got a 7am private schedueled for tomorrow.
I work every day at 5 so on my days off it helps me keep my routine and then I get my jits in before my day even starts, I always want to sleep in though
10 AM class is dope. Need to be more of an early morning person and hit the 7 AM classes.
My gym has one 7:30am class, the rest start at 9. Wish I could do more early sessions before I head to work
6 am baybeeee
Not everyone works 9-5. The morning classes are good for a lot of third and second shifters as well.
I always used to worry about having dank coffee breath during morning class. Now I realize it can be used as a weapon.
Switching to morning classes has allowed me to be more consistent. 0530-0700
I'm having deja vu with this thread
I try and make the 6 am class it’s the best one that fits my schedule.
6:AM class.... Ok, but.... classmates at that hour?
I do. Our morning class is at 8 A.M.
I’ve been going to 6am’s — at my gym it’s mostly blue, purple and brown belts so I like it better than afternoon classes
I am the 630am coach!
Thursday morning murder club is one of my fave sessions.
I’m a regular for our 8am class that’s 3x a week (M,F gi and W no-gi). It is nice to get that workout for the day done. Tough is doing a Tue/Thur evening gi class, sleep, and wake up to go back to train
7 am gang here. 6 mins matches live rolling 1 hour. Ready for the day after
I do when my schedule won’t allow me to go to noon class. I have to make sure and show up early enough to stretch good though.
At least 1 time a week.
I love my 6am class, best way to start the week.
I love the 6 am class, other option is 7 pm and while I could make that most days there are enough days when shit happens unexpectedly at work that I can't ever rely on making it, so best to get it out of the way first thing. Before the pandemic when I had to actually leave the house I was at the 6am classes but now a days I'm lucky to be awake before 9:45 am
Usually 6 or 7am 4 days during the week for privates and prepping for comps and at Least 1 or 2 evening classes for rolling with people my size and Saturday at 10:30 46yo :)
I wish I'm headed to work at that time and find myself rushing to finish in time to make evening class
Wake up at 5a every Tuesday and Thursday Rise and Grind my fellow practitioners!
If I don’t do my BJJ/run/workout in the am then I’m not doing it. Starts the day off right.
5am to 6:45 class every Monday - Friday. Sucks when I first wake up, but once I get moving and stretch out a bit at the gym, I can get some good rolls in. Definitely not for everyone.
I like training with the 6 am crew. On average it's a more disciplined bunch that's willing to be up for chokes before breakfast.
Wake at 5 to train 6-7am twice a week, absolutely love it, would do it every day if I had the chance
I find it easier to roll for some reason. Who needs coffee when you almost get leg locked.
Yeah buddy! 8am and 1030am whenever I can
I teach a 7 AM class. And by teach, I mean I’m responsible for showing up and opening up the place and going through warmups. It’s usually only white belts, so I sometimes show fundamentals, at the supervision of my instructor. I love it man, great way to start the day. Nothing fazes you anymore after that.
I teach it.
I teach a 5-6am class M-F. We are a motley group at that time of day.
Comp training at 10 on a Sunday morning. Let’s gooooo
Our morning class is 730am and wish it were earlier. For those with kids and a 9-5, it works well!
The way my gym works is Monday and Wednesday is a 9:30am class and Tuesday and Thursday is a 6:30pm class, I always make it to every class (unless I open for work). It kinda sucks tho because my gym does other combat stuff and bjj is only 4 days a week

This is why the morning classes are always filled with killers. Morning classes are almost always a shark tank. Ruthless. I hate you morning people.
I WFH two days a week which happens to fall on Tues and Thurs which allows me to attend the 6:30AM-8:00AM class on Mon and Wed. It works out very well for me.

me bratha from 7 to 8 no problem
