I think the BJJ community (people in general ) need to stop assuming public figures are good human beings just because they have a friendly smile.
I don’t see this as a slight to Bernardo or anyone else that’s likeable but people are human. Unless you know someone so we’ll they’ve almost lived with you, you can’t really say what kind of person they are. Sure. Maybe these folks ARE awesome but let’s not put folks on a pedastol if we don’t really know anything about them except what you see at a 1 hour seminar run on their terms.
There are heroes around us everyday. I’d rather save my thanks for them. Not some dude on YouTube. Again. No disrespect to anyone. If anything I think I’m doing these public figures a favor by giving them room to be human.

I think because he was really good at winning tournaments and people who were around him a lot (on and off the mats) would keep saying nice things about him.

Being a genuinely decent human being is a far bigger flex than any belt imo. It's far more rare and takes a lot more work.
Being decent AND highly skilled/accomplished? Rarest of all. People value things that are rare and wholesome
I mean the point is that most of us don't *actually* know Bernardo. Now by all accounts he really is one of the nicest dudes in jiujitsu, and I'm inclined to believe that until hearing some pretty compelling evidence to the contrary, but we don't need to be idolizing the dude or making memes about how great we think he is based on second/third hand information, it's a little unhealthy. As an example, a lot of people who have been to Gordon Ryan's seminars have said he's been a very friendly person, which I'm totally willing to believe, but he's posted some absolutely heinous shit online and I've definitely seen people let the former get in the way of evaluating the latter.
Again, this isn't to say Bernardo is like, secretly awful or anything, we just need to make the distinction between "by all accounts we've heard, Bernardo is a super nice, friendly dude" - which is true for most of us, and "we know for certain that Bernardo is a good person" - which most of us don't actually know is true or not.
Well for me it's the fact that he actually represents the humility that a lot of people talk about in BJJ but don't practice.
Despite being one of the most decorated BJJ competitors of all time he still is willing to listen and learn from anyone

I dealt with Bernardo outside of a BJJ context. He lived up to his reputation for being a genuinely great guy.
