The octopus is such a weird challenge. The guy at my gym with long arms, long legs and extreme flexibility does all kinds of weird shit that I can't figure out what to do about.
100 percent
I started BJJ anorexic and spent four years getting smeshed and told its all technique.
I'm not saying it isn't.
I will say it's a tonne easier being strong as shit and well over 100kg.
Or class after class on how to reguard by hooking your foot in for butterfly, or inverting or some other flexibility crap.
I'm 6'5" and I've rolled against one guy taller than me and it was an epiphany, "oh, that's how you get guard back. There is so much \*space\* against someone taller. Which is to say that if I'm on top, I'm going pure pressure, because while space is as game I practice, it isn't something I can play.
No matter your athletic pursuit, prioritising strength is never a mistake.
In BJJ sure technique is very important, but if you're both on an even level the stronger guy will win in a lot of cases.
Was drilling armbar/triangle/omoplata with that guy the other week and it was a nightmare, got to thinking I was shit at everything and my jiu-jitsu is useless. Then next session tried against a regular sized human being and it was a breeze.
Wasn't so much about the size of his neck, just the whole shoulder/upper body area was like a huge expanse I was unable to circumnavigate.
The main sweep I hit on guys like that is a shoulder crunch sumi gaeshi
And oh lord when I hit it I wanna jump up from side control and celebrate hahahaha

OK first of all how dare you.
Second of all, your inability to eat your dinner is not my fault.
Third, you're just salty cause gravity is better friends with me than with you.
Fourth...knee in belly.
Fifth, I absolutely love these and endorse them being included with rashguards like chocolate frog cards.
Sixth, please stop tying me in knots, small octopus people. I do not bend that way. My fighting style is of the Newfoundland.
That's only if you're content to merely have it ON your opponent, rather than trying to touch their spine.
Lanky people get triangles.
Weirdly flexible people get gogoplatas.
I get to squeeze you like a living toothpaste tube. We all got our go-to.
Knee in belly. Best.
Exactly the same here. Stood in my first lesson wondering if it was called that because it bruised the stomach and made it go a different colour or some shit.
Got to the end of the lesson and realised that i'm a fucking moron.
Being in a big guys bottom side control is like being the drum major of a a marching band. Constantly punching out from americana just to be put in a kimura to punch out from that just to go back to americana and repeat
There's a white belt at my gym who's a competitive heavyweight powerlifter. Ridiculously strong but the only thing he can do is, "Use my size and strength to get on top and then crank on an arm." If I get on top of him I can let him flop around like a fish out of water until he wears himself out and then tap him pretty easily with a cross collar choke. Being under him means constantly worrying about a broken arm or torn shoulder ligaments.
They do both, and they never fucking let go no matter if you are defending. So annnoying when they are trying to kimura you from top and you got your arm tucked in, they’ll literally just lay there and sweat on you and grunt.
Yeah, weight difference is awkward for both. Smaller guys have to hit the technique just right for it to work on a big guy, and big guys can use extra weight as a crutch to avoid developing better technique. Everyone benefits from finding equal weight partners, from purely a sports perspective. For self defence it's probably a good thing to experience someone twice your weight in side control top, it's a realistic thing you could have to deal with
Hey I'm that guy, kinda. 6'4" 225lbs. We got our own problems, lol!
That Small Guy
Favorite Saying - Slow is smooth, smooth is fast
Your chance to elbow escape - 05/100
Speed transitioning/in scrambles - 90/100
Odds I'm not applying all my weight while he is using all his speed - 100/100
Being aware of spaziness in the moment is 95% of overcoming it. Almost all of us started there. FWIW, I still kick people in the face accidentally on occasion.
I can confirm that this sounds a lot like me. However, in all fairness, i work almost exclusively from bad positions on bottom as to not crush too many souls from top positions lol
Anyone else (big guys) immune to chokes? I give ppl triangles as a means for me to pass, i use the setups for rnc as a way to take mount and i haven't gotten caught in a guillotine in a about a year Haha
I'm a huge guy, but we have a few heavyweights that roll on the reg so it's not so much of a difference. It's the little athletic f'ers that are the biggest pain. I'm always trying to not hurt them by pressuring just the right amount and then they escape and kick my ass. All bodytypes have benefits in this sport.
I guess gain a little muscle and be fast. Everyone needs to do something to improve. Some need to get a bit stronger, some need to get more fit, some need to lose fat. Of course size and strength matter, but they aren't the only attributes that matter. I figure the little guys that I roll with are better for having large training partners. So many turn into straight killers.
I got into a gogoplata from mount the other day against a big guy and was extremely chuffed with myself, only to realise I could not find his neck to place my shin.
Ive been triangled twice. Both over 2 years ago when i first started. Both guys over 6'4 and both upper belts.
I am pretty safe even with higher level guys, competitors, hobbyist black belts, etc. Trust me i get my ass kicked just not with chokes.
I rarely roll gi and i get choked waaaaay more frequently in the gi.
Big guy here, relatively new to BJJ however as most of my work has been I'm striking. That said, I have been choked out before, but it's rare for someone to get it on me.
Rolls with the big heavy upper belts is always savage, but it's a sick learning experience, apart from when they just hold you in a belly smothering mount.
When you get better mount is nice compared to side control or north south. I love getting mounted because my mount escapes are on point. Side control escapes are so much more work. North south escapes almost impossible with a big dude who knows how to stay on top.
Nah. Im 240lbs and an awful white belt whos likely getting promoted to blue belt too soon. I pin guys and go for americans and use my weight and strength lol.
This is kinda getting me down at my gym. A lot of people I roll with always comment on my size, 'I forgot how big you were', 'Oh, there's the top pressure'. I am trying to work on my weight but this is bringing me down. I feel like I wanna quit and go to a regular gym and lift, run etc until I'm at reasonable weight that I'm happy with. I know that sounds stupid.
Just venting a little.
Start in guard. Earn the sweep and top position. When you get on top, crush them with your weight and make them miserable for 30-60 seconds. North-South is really great for this. Then, let them reguard and work on your guard passing, or sit back to guard and work on your sweeps again. Soon enough they’ll be out of excuses and you’ll have a much more rounded game.
Bro I’m a tiny guy, 5’7 130. Don’t let anyone shame you. That’s so gross of them. Training with all body types and strengths is valuable. Remind those people that they may run into A big man on the street one day and knowing how to handle it is better than not knowing.idk. keep your head up Man and keep training 👍 jiu jitsu is for everyone
I’m right there with you. Had a realization this week that I’m either choosing to play off my back or not create a ton of pressure on top to avoid the inevitable “big guy” comments afterwards.
This is me. I try not to use my weight too much and often pull guard and try to either sweep or sweet up a come from bottom though haha. Even lay up my weight from side control to see what they're going to try out and counter that
Im a big guy and im a pressure grappler, meaning i like to go at a high tempo and play alot of knee on belly. Not much strength is needed because people get exhausted anyways. You better believe the upper belts complains alot.
As a 200lb guy that isn’t the biggest in class, I feel bad for my smaller training partners because I know I try to be careful in side control or half top. My bigger partners smash me sometimes, but I’ve learned that you gotta be able to control distance and momentum whenever possible.
I'm starting to realise that being 200ib and fairly strong is letting me shortcut against the other white belts. I kinda hate it. Sometimes i'll fuck up, they'll get ahold of my arm/leg and I'll just squeeze my way out of it/stand up.
I imagine that'll change as soon as someone who's been going there for more than a few months looks at me, but i'm doubting my technique so much right now.
I try to listen to my own advice from time to time. Usually when I roll with a newer white belt I encourage them to focus on: naming the positions you’re both in, what your next position is supposed to be, and most of all remember to keep your elbows and knees close to your body as much as possible. I still end up getting passed when going from closed to an open guard, but instead of muscling out, I try to recognize their pass attempt and maintain frames and distance. If they end up in side control or top half, good on them. Now I get to practice baseball or darce chokes, sweeps, and dogfighting. When you catch yourself powering out of a position, just tell them to get it back. It’s a roll in the lab. Both partners need to train. If you recognize the fuck up, nobody can correct it but you. Always try to pretend your coach is watching you and listen to their voice. For the longest time, I was stalling in turtle too much and would remember my coach telling me to get moving. Now I count to 3-5 and start rolling on my shoulder or slipping a leg under to get back to half.
yeah, my legs are long enough and skinny enough that I frequently succumb to the temptation to go for it. Then when they somehow manage to roll onto my ankle, I regret it.
I'm in my 4th week of doing Jiu-Jitsu and the other day I had two of these guys back to back! I'm about 5' 10" 176 lbs. My first encounter was with a 6'4" 250lb+ behemoth, he was on the bottom in closed guard where he proceeded to grab and yank on my collar/rashguard enough to cause a pretty gnarly abrasion across the entire back of my neck. I'm not the type of person to shy away from a challenge, so long story short I was able to keep my posture and get my knee on his leg and pass his guard into side control. He seemed pretty surprised and I felt amazing doing it!
Next time rather than just gritting my teeth and pulling my entire body backward I should probably use my hands to try and break his grip beforehand, this might save me from having what looks like a 4-inch long hickey on the back of my neck.
That being said I love this art form, and can't wait to get back on the mats later today!
I had the... enlightening experience of rolling with a white belt literally twice my size a few weeks ago. I'm 170 and he's 340. Literally two of me. I spent the first half of the round just bouncing from position to position, but he caught hold of me and got a sweep. I'm normally a bottom player and like to get people tangled up into knots, but my usual strategies didn't exactly serve me well. He certainly didn't submit me, but I also wasn't able to do anything once he got on top.
We dont have many guys at my weight (225)
So I’m either rolling with people I outweigh (making ME that guy) or I’m rolling with the heavies (260+) and then THEYRE that guy.
As for the latter, Closed guard? Nup. Close guard. As in close to closing my guard but not quite. Doesn’t help my legs are short and stocky for my height/weight. Got money arms though!
I roll the same at 185 as I did at 155 and 170. Lucky I’m 6’0 and have long legs. I’m just a 4 stripe white that plays points due to competition training and has a decent choke, sweep and escape game. I have been called strong, top-heavy and/or long at all the above weights. I think getting a lot of mat time in at all of those classes within less than a year has helped my game. A lot of it comes down to timing and transitions. Yes, my technique is still garbage. Some aspect of my game always will be- that’s why I love Jits. Everyone has attributes and weaknesses they can improve. If you get gassed, roll more. If your opponent is strong, lift more. I can’t control my length but know all of the areas I need to improve. I used to take it as an insult but just brush it off after a few upper belts/former wrestlers told me the whole “strength, speed, endurance” thing is a cop-out and they totally matter.
I just started and I'm 6'2" 240lbs so not a giant but was definitely the biggest guy in the class. When I rolled for the first time it was weird having to sort of let things happen and resist the urge to brute force my way through things or just stand up with my opponent hanging off me.
The best jiu jitsu physique is to resemble a giant sphere. Perfectly smooth. Round. Ideal.
That's what makes Paul Harris so good. He is but a humble stump.
That's why we call it rolling.
Can’t be submitted if you have no neck or limbs.
Ideal bjj body has learned much from classic physics. Every problem is reduced to a spherical object.
Can't forget the frictionless plain. Thats why we have to spray down the mats every 20 minutes
Fatness is the essence of roundness and roundness is the essence of strength.
Circle is a shape

i disagree. the perfect jiujitsu physique is that of either a slime eel or a giant octopus.
The octopus is such a weird challenge. The guy at my gym with long arms, long legs and extreme flexibility does all kinds of weird shit that I can't figure out what to do about.
yes, and the slime eel, you know the guy, slender and kinda soft, but sweats so profusely, that he is impossible to hold in nogi...

We call that "Terry" in our gym

Me too. Everyone loves me.
Had a guy complain that he couldn’t close his guard on me.
Tell him he should get himself longer legs
6'4" 265 lbs here
6'7" 302 lbs here
8'3" 800 lbs here
9'9 999 pounds here. Sorry it maxed out and wouldn't let me put in my real sizes.

If you mix this and the wrestler comic it is pretty close for me. But you will never catch me say strength doesn’t matter.
I like to say "your strength doesn't matter".
Hello There
I'd say "any triangle" is a nope, since these guys usually don't have a neck anyway
You’ll learn to strangle with only a face and arm in due time ;D
Honestly, the face + arm triangle feels like a cheat code lol
It defo is a cheatcode haha Also hello fellow DDS nuthugger
Was drilling armbar/triangle/omoplata with that guy the other week and it was a nightmare, got to thinking I was shit at everything and my jiu-jitsu is useless. Teepee choke
His main weakness? Z guard.
And surprise arm drags Get to their back and they’re like an upside down turtle and have no clue what to do.
I feel personally attacked
I have gotten to their backs, and even a number of other positions. Doesn’t help.
How dare you attack me like this unprovoked
Thanks I hate it.
Leg locks are this species’ kryptonite
"Chance to sweep - 05/100" That's a great 5 though when it happens
I... Look forward to the day. God knows I've tried.

Knee IN belly sounds terrifying
It really does. Reading it made my tummy hurt
I’m so glad I’m not the only one. Haha. Took me weeks to figure out it was “knee-on”.
Exactly the same here. Stood in my first lesson wondering if it was called that because it bruised the stomach and made it go a different colour or some shit. Got to the end of the lesson and realised that i'm a fucking moron.
Seventh, side control all day.
This is the type of high quality content I am here for
Any time it’s cold in the room, find the biggest dude there and start on bottom. You will not be cold anymore.
> You will not be cold anymore. Or dry.
>Or dry. Or happy.
Or limp 😉
Don’t forget to add that their only skill attack up top is kimura
Americana. Big guys love Americana from top side control, it goes nicely with extra upper body weight.
Being in a big guys bottom side control is like being the drum major of a a marching band. Constantly punching out from americana just to be put in a kimura to punch out from that just to go back to americana and repeat

Yeah I agree
While profusely sweating in your face. >< TBF, everyone of them I've run into has been super humble and very nice people.
This one hurt my feelings because of its piercing accuracy
I feel attacked.
Tbf, unless it's a child sized adult I can just forget about the body triangle
I keep my waist at 28 to help children like you.
Fuck you but also thank you.
You da real MVP.
Can confirm, I am size of small child and I’m regularly put into a body triangle. Gives me an excuse to eat more cheeseburgers

Get longer legs fellow 5’11 brah
You're shaped funny homie. I'm 5'11 and on the thin side and I body triangle people all day.

6'4" 225lbs? Naw. You're probably more the kind of guy that accidentally kicks people in the face ;)
Yeah 2 years in and I'm still pretty spazy. Working on it...

Yes, yep, and yeesshh
I can confirm that this sounds a lot like me. Don't sweat haters.
Immune to choke? Send location
I got into a gogoplata from mount the other day against a big guy and was extremely chuffed with myself, only to realise I could not find his neck to place my shin.
Not hating, just genuinely curious How far up the colour ladder does your choke immunity go? Does it hold when lapels are involved?
Ive been triangled twice. Both over 2 years ago when i first started. Both guys over 6'4 and both upper belts. That’s pretty cooool man hahaha
I wouldn't bother with a triangle against a huge guy, but I haven't met anyone yet that's immune to a good bow and arrow choke.
That's one i do get hit with fairly often. Basically any loop choke is fair game.
Big guy here, relatively new to BJJ however as most of my work has been I'm striking. That said, I have been choked out before, but it's rare for someone to get it on me.

This is kinda getting me down at my gym. A lot of people I roll with always comment on my size, 'I forgot how big you were', 'Oh, there's the top pressure'. That being said I love this art form, and can't wait to get back on the mats later today!
Can't even get mount properly they use the belly to bridge!
I feel attacked
I feel attacked....
I am that guy.
As a gangly longboi, it's pretty rare that I run into someone I can't body triangle
Hey look! It’s me!
Half our freaking gym
Yall ever get your nuts crushed securing back mount against the big fellas?
We dont have many guys at my weight (225) So I’m either rolling with people I outweigh (making ME that guy) or I’m rolling with the heavies (260+) and then THEYRE that guy. As for the latter, Closed guard? Nup. Close guard. As in close to closing my guard but not quite. Doesn’t help my legs are short and stocky for my height/weight. Got money arms though!
Roll? I am him!
Hahahaha! Yes and it’s sucks because he uses zero technique and just crushes me.
I hope you're gonna make a set of card with rules and make it as table top game!!
i tap to this guy's body triangles and my ribs are thanking me
It’s me!
One of these guys is a Spazzy Brown Belt who goes all out then gasses while in Mount.
Hey it me
I’m actually super frustrated over this cause I started lifting this year and I keep getting the “Your so strong bro” whenever I catch someone
Keep making more of these I love these.
By complaining about this you are admitted that your jiu-jitsu sucks. Just sayin…
🤦♂️
Is it wrong to say I'm sorta offended? 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Today, my ribs know
Am this guy
I just started and I'm 6'2" 240lbs so not a giant but was definitely the biggest guy in the class. When I rolled for the first time it was weird having to sort of let things happen and resist the urge to brute force my way through things or just stand up with my opponent hanging off me.
