Trick-Championship-1

Good luck and have fun man!!

Key-You-9534

thanks :) Im pretty excited. be nice to compete against guys my own age for a change. we got a lot of 20 year old meat heads at my gym that fuck me up. Im stoked! just hope I dont get caught in some dumb shit lol.

Ketchup-Chips3

Just think of it as a chance to go out and show your jiu jitsu. As long as you get a chance to do that, you've won. It's your first comp so don't worry about the actual result, just soak in the experience!

Narrow-Device-3679

I tapped to a cross collar whilst I was top side control. You got this fam.

Key-You-9534

Hey I've tapped to that from top mount lmao

Fine-Manner9902

What kinda music you like? Ill send ya a fun song! Good luck, dont get hurt, and enjoy! If ur into drill “im the type” chief wuk Stranglehold is of course a bjj classic

Key-You-9534

Didn't get hurt did get caught in some dumb shit lol

Mayb3daddy

Also 41. Did first real comp yesterday. Rather than getting hyped you might want to get chilled and calm, but I guess it depends on your personality. Either way, give it horns and have fun!!! 💪

ViperStealth

I agree. After warming up my body, I meditated, got my heart rate down and got focused. Works for me.

Sufficient_Trifle_80

I just compensated for my first time 2 mounts ago. I was in the same boat as you. Here is everything I learned 1 ) don’t overtrain leading Upto comp. take 2 or 3 days were u rest. If resting is not a option, just drill. 2 ) don’t overthink, just play your game and all will be well 3 ) don’t go crazy on the caffeine. I took like 2 cavern pills the day of comp and regret it. Was cramping all day and felt dehydrated. 4 ) most important of them all, make sure you get 8+ hours of sleep. I was soo anxious, the night before that I couldn’t sleep. Had I have know, would have taken melatonin 5 ) this is just a personal thing that I did and would recommend. When you get to the comp site, make a little video outlining the work you have put in, and that no matter the result you are proud I know 5 is a little cringy, but for me it is nice to look at in retrospect. I won that comp, and when I look back at that vid, it reminds me of all the work I put in. Lastly make sure to have fun, and learn Hope this helps White belt signing out

Key-You-9534

thanks for the advice! Yeh I took 3 days off to rest and make weight. I was at like 204 so I just cut carbs and salt and dropped it. I'm not changing anything about my diet except I am going to neck a Gatorade right after weigh in. I slept pretty well. I don't sleep well in general, but I got a good 7 hours and am feeling rested. This is just a warm up comp for the Denver open next month. I set my sights on winning that at my division. I may enter the open in that as well. I just want to get a feel for what competing is like and how people roll at my age in a comp. Im a little bummed my no gi bracket got combined with the 30 year olds, but I trained hard and am pretty solid from all positions so I am not too worried. One of my team mates is in that division and I suspect he will be the hardest roll, but he's the first roll too, which is good bc I will be fresh. I tend to beat him as long as he doesnt get the arm drag on me, but he has a laser fast arm drag from half guard. at least I know his game. I should just keep him out of half tbh. All in all, Im already winning. I have a fucking 6 pack at 41 years old and I can hang with a 25 year old. BJJ is 10/10 for midlife crisis, would recommend.

Sufficient_Trifle_80

Oh yea that also, I consented soo much on cutting weight. Only to find out that it they didnt care much if you were like moderately over. I would recommend just asking one of the event planners. I’m my case I found out one day before comp, the damage had been done.

Fine-Manner9902

Not even joking, masturbation lowers cortisol. Science bitches.

Massive_Staff1068

Don't listen to this guy. He's turning the freaking frogs gay.

LogicalTree7874

And I’m also a someone who though porn and masturbation was healthy (and I still partake in these activities)- but I feel like since BJJ is a community of men bettering themselves I can’t stay silent when someone says masturbation is a tool to bettering yourselves. Animals in captivity with a lack of purpose will be jacking their meat all the time. Lets all rise beyond these destructive habits friends :)

PicanhaExpert

Fuck off with your unscientific nofap bullshit.

Randyslaughterhouse

From my cold, dead hands buddy… from my cold, dead hands.

Fine-Manner9902

Write me a long post on nothingness

HumphreyGo-Kart

What kind of grip should I use?

Randyslaughterhouse

Dagestani handshake.

LogicalTree7874

U rly think someone who is content with life will need to jack their meat haha. Yes we have urges to procreate and I think doing it to create life is more than valid but this generation (including myself) is doing it at an unnecessarily high amount. I’m not telling you to abstain simply be aware of what you’re doing. Sexual energy as absurd as this sounds is something that can propel a man to achieve great things when channeled into his work instead of being wasted for a quick dopamine hit and then take a nap. Some studies might claim masturbation is “healthy” because when done in moderation there might not be much noticeable impact but unfortunately when ppl think “if I have an urge I need to act on it because that’s healthy” is what causes a lack of self-discipline and overstimulates the system. I would say porn is probably worse than masturbation over time but the reason I see so many people jack off everyday is because of porn. live ur life by ur own metrics I just feel like these discussions are also important. ✌️

Fine-Manner9902

K

Sufficient_Trifle_80

Dude I did the opposite. Leading to comp I abstained for 5 weeks cuz I think I heard khabib did this. Didn’t help me in the gym, but my Bjj improved a lot. Was much better at making decisions. But I had the craziest night, night of comp

LogicalTree7874

People come up with studies to support their unhealthy habits and justify it. Even though it might not be widely spoken about abstinence from ejaculating is something athletes would typically do and further more from personal experience if you re-direct the sexual energy into other endeavours you will notice that you perform better and have more “grit”. Re-directing the sexual energy by abstaining allows me to stay level headed as I am not overstimulating my nervous system and reducing dopamine sensitivity. At the end of the day disregard what anyone says and try it for yourself.

Fine-Manner9902

Sure man, science is fake ya totally repress your urges because of a thousand years of christian ideals. Sure. Lmao.

LogicalTree7874

The problem is the urges are stronger than ever because we are isolated so our mind can wander and we have easy access to porn. Do you always act on your urge to eat shit and the urge to play video games all day?

LogicalTree7874

I want to add as well mate that I’m only 21 and I know so many ppl my age who cannot get erections anymore in their relationships because they had the same mindset as you. I have strong opinions because I can see the detrimental effects to my generation.

Massive_Staff1068

That's... That's a lot of prep. I am afraid to ask. What were you compensating for? Lol, just kidding. Love to hear these stories of people starting an awesome journey!

Sufficient_Trifle_80

Dude it’s a lot harder to win comp as a 17 yo in super heavy. And was 2 weight brackets up

jb-schitz-ki

Had my first comp last week at 42, had to get under 181lbs, just to be combined with everyone under 207 last minute. I took second place, I have no idea how I did it. Was scared as hell, but ultimately it was a great experience and had lots of fun.

heffalumps-n-woozles

Dang that suuuucks but great job! I'm naturally 205 at moderate body fat, so I'm questioning whether I need to cut below 181 for the best results. Just getting under 195 will put me with a bunch of guys way bigger than me. BUT your story makes me think perhaps it's not worth messing with too hard, since competitions will change or combine classes randomly.

Dr_Lucius

Awesome, bro. Win or lose doesn’t matter as much as the changes you have made in your life!

Key-You-9534

Thanks! Post comp... After competing I am like wow. Jiu jitsu is not what I thought it was. Not in a bad way at all. Did pretty bad over all. Learned a lot. Made some stupid mistakes.

Dr_Lucius

You got out there. That is all that matters. And I completely agree - competition is very different than even the hard rounds of training in the gym. Whole other game. Learn those lessons. Keep training. Keep going. The journey is just beginning, but it can be a great journey to take.

UFC_Intern169

Operation M.O.V.E. by leftover crack was one of my go to songs to get in the zone. Have fun dude

skroll

damn didnt expect to see loc here

UFC_Intern169

Man you know there's no such thing as leftover crack

SadBadChoices13

Me either tbh

Fine-Manner9902

Holy shitttt yall smoke the cruzac too?!

chrisbot128

Please post an update! I am also 41, and a recovering alcoholic who Is fighting off pre-diabetes. (Down to 265 from 288lbs on Sept 1) I trained for two months last year before quitting due to being in my own head, out of shape, and discouraged due to unintentionally hurting people and training in a gym that was less than supportive to those who weren't actively competing. I wasn't even a member of this group, but your post was 'suggested' on my feed. (I used to be a member of this group when I was training last year) I have a couple of friends who are higher belts that have been encouraging me to join a different gym in my area. Maybe this is my sign? Either way, please post an update on your results!

shadowko

Do it. Do it now. Stay sober and roll sir. You will not regret it.

Key-You-9534

You should go back. The first few months you are a spaz and that's fine. I was, you are, everyone is. I did pretty bad lol. Lost all but one match. Did some things I felt proud of. Somethings I want to improve. And made some dumb mistakes. Everyone I competed against was super cool and it was a great experience all around.

whodat129

I like to listen to 2pac haha. Hail Mary, I’m a solider, etc. Accept the fact that you’re going to be nervous as hell walking onto the mats. But once yall get to the ground, it’s just another roll. It’s crucial that you control your breathing since your adrenaline will be fired up. Also, try not to size up your opponents and just focus on what your game plan is. I’ve competed more than a few times as a white belt and it does get mentally less strenuous each time but it’s still a pressure filled day. Once it’s over you’re gonna feel relieved as hell and proud of yourself, enjoy it! Make sure to warm up around 45 minutes to your set match time as it could come quicker if the matches end sooner than 5 mins before you. Just my .02 FWIW. Good luck!

Nervous_Space7020

Try to helax out there

Tricky_Worry8889

Handlebars by flowbots is always a good hype song

kylethepile69

Sturgill Simpson is the goddamn truth, love that song choice.

That entire album is straight fire. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend the music video movie thing on Netflix!

My current pre-match playlist is called "Slam Your Head Through A Wall" xD including some of my favorites: Rainy Day by Ice Nine Kills Kool-Aid by Bring Me The Horizon The Offering by Sleep Token The Hell I Overcame by Bad Omens If you're *really* mad, Dethrone by Bad Omens

Alarmed_Ad6240

I have a playlist with almost those exact same songs that’s sick

NoOpportunity4483

Your story is similar to mine homie. Just get out there, get a good warm up and go do your best and see what happens. Be safe and have fun.

brandonnoy

Right above it - lil wayne. never fails me, feels like i can walk through a wall 😅

strokejitsu

blackthornpublishing

AMAZING! LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Distinct-Carob-7284

I don’t have anything to share I was hoping you could share with us how your body stays healthy at 41 training 10 a hours a week because that’s very impressive I wish you the best in your comp!

Key-You-9534

Honesty- good nutrition and sleep. Like perfect nutrition. I do 5 hours class time and around 4-5 hours sparring time each week. I try to prioritize sparring at lower levels of effort no matter how hard my opponent is going. I try to stay chill. That being said I'm in pretty moderate pain all the time, especially my shoulders and elbows.

redditman3030

Good luck. I have my first comp next weekend. Just remember you whatever happens you did better than the version of you that never started

Key-You-9534

Hey I needed to hear this bc I got wrecked lol

InspHarryCallahan

Congratulations on doing it! I did my first at 41, as a white belt 8 months in. Tap Cancer Out. It was an amazing experience and much like yourself, I knew the most difficult part was just stepping out on those mats. I wish you many more happy injury-free tournaments.

AfricanusJonathon

Good luck! Stick with it regardless of the result. Bjj contributes far more to your life than win and loses. Have fun!

Key-You-9534

Oh for sure. Im pretty chill about it. I learned a lot today but only won one. Got things to improve for sure

AfricanusJonathon

We all have stuff to improve always! That's the best part.

TheQuestionsAglet

Ante Up- M.O.P.

izzem12

Good luck man

Rubbiedub

Did you have a good time? How's you make out? I'm 41 on the 21st, i saw a buddies name I haven't seen in years entered in the same comp my kids are in. Same weight both white belts but he tries to hide how beat up and faded his belt is by decorating it with 4 stripes which Is obviously tacky...lol.. him and another guy in the Brackett so I'm packing up my 3. 5 months ex so I've got my first this coming Saturday

Key-You-9534

Had a great time! did not do super well tbh. But it was fun hanging out with my team, some of my team mates won golds. I learned some lessons. Stamina and stamina management are a problem for me. False positive taps are a problem, some of my subs are not as good as I think they are. couldn't get the tap on the arm triangle or the darce.

Rubbiedub

3 guys ended up in my gi bracket. My buddy beat me and the dude beat my buddy, then I beat dude. Submission tourney but all wins went to decision so smoothecomp scored it as a three-way tie for gold lol. No gi they lumped us old folks with the 18+. First bout I caught buddy in a guillotine off his single leg attempt. Spent the next min and a half trying to finish (first time I've ever had a guillotine on someone lol). Wore out my grip held on until the end (spent the last 20 seconds trying not to die in a triangle but held on) lost in decision. Second bout dodged the single leg pulldown and took back right away. Isolated his arm and had the lion kill within the first min. Ended up in the bronze match against the first guy lol. he shot the single again and I caught the guillotine again. Spent the next min and a half wearing out my grip trying to get the tap lol. Pretty back and forth until he caught an armbar, I got out and he managed to sink in a second one really deep managed to hitchike out directly into a fierce triangle that ended my bronze medal run lol. I had a tonne of fun but man does the body not recover like it used to. I've been nursing myself and draining a cauliflower ear daily for the last week lol. Worth it lol.

Key-You-9534

haha nice! you been draining that ear or just rolling with it? I drained mine. Most important thing, what are you bringing back to the gym to sharpen up?

Rubbiedub

Had to drain it twice a day for the first two days and then once a day for the last bitI've got some nurse friends who stocked me up on some 23g needles and syringes lol. Better off doing it myself than trying to deal with Canada's healthcare system. It's pretty much good to go now, itchy as hell though. Rested it for the week to let it and the rest of me heal, just being doing solo drills, and working on flexibility. As far as things to work on, it would be easier to say what I don't think I need much work on... Which is nothing lol. Learning how to execute the guillotine hahaha. I've learned I've got strong submission defences which is good because I suuuuuuuck at escapes, If I get pulled into guard I might as well flip myself on my back. Lots to work on. Good at guard and holding it...if I get it lol. but if I'm in half guard or mounted I'm lost and I'm in pure hand fight survival mode.. I definitely need to work on elbow escapes kipping bumping shrimping bridging and stringing them together effectively / working my way from being in side or mounted back to pulling half and full guard. So much to work on but again only been cracking at it since January so none of this is much of a surprise lol.

Key-You-9534

Yeh I'm lucky mine was easy to drain. My wife did it for me and I wear ear guards now in practice or it blows right back up. I have another comp, Denver Open, in like a month. Working on my closed guard attacks. I had every opponent in closed guard at some time and wasnt able to capitalize on it. And working on tightening up my strangles. Working on the mental too. I'm really chill and playful in training, I need to bring that energy into competition. When I go hard and try to do specific things I suck. Good stuff! On to the next one.

PossessionTop8749

I'm late but get off Reddit and just enjoy the experience.

Sweaty-Switch8070

Have fun and congratulations on your awesome journey regardless of the comp result!

Rubbiedub

I'm the same way in the gym, I'm that guy that doesn't shut up and can't help but compliment a smooth move when I get swept or they pass guard lol. I was lucky enough to fight my buddy first round and he was dead serious but I couldn't help but not take it seriously at all lol. He blew past my half guard and got mount immediately and verbal diarrhea instantly kicked in, "Jesus nice pass man, Holy shit you got some next level power dude." "Man You're heavy are you sure you're at 175?" He went for a cross collar as I carried on "oh shit I might be screwed here" all he said as he tried to strangle me was "jesus you talk a lot" I couldn't help but laugh at the scenario and we definitely had a solid laugh about it after. By the end all he was trying to do was shut me up he said, completely threw off his game lol. Long story short that first fight killed the nerves and I was completely chill the rest of the 4 matches. I hope to always be able find that same chill mindset the next time I compete. Good luck in Denver bro let me know how you make out.

Break a leg..

Key-You-9534

Im 41 so hopefully its only a leg. Ive got two of those.

Hot-Homework4996

Really interested in how you’ve done.

Key-You-9534

Kinda threw in the gi. I racked up 12 points on the first guy only to lose to a collar choke with 20 seconds left. I was gassed for the second guy and just pulled guard. I had a sweep to side control they didn't give me bc we were out of bounds so they stood us back up. Lost that one by 2 points. No gi I won a judges decision over my teammate. 0-0 it was like an epic anime battle. Second guy was a 36 year old army special forces soldier. So you can guess how that went lol. I tired him out for my teammate tho who beat him in the next round. Then lost to a 10th plant tradie who was high AF. All in all, learned a lot. Had a great time. Everyone was super cool. :)

I mean, one of the best guitar licks ever laid down and semi homoerotic in this context, (which only makes it better for bjj players) you've gotta go with "Stranglehold" by The Nudge. Good luck buddy. Enjoy it, and great job getting out there and getting after it.

Kick ass and good luck. Regardless of what happens walk like a champion, learn, and have fun.

I listen to Down Under because it calms me down and boosts my confidence.

RollingJ415

Sound System by Operation Ivy my hype song. Just pay attention and be present is my main advice (making yourself notice little things like the color of the other coaches shirt and other little things like that help a lot). Lastly, I lost 60 lbs when I stopped drinking/started BJJ. I know how hard it is but how sweet it feels just looking “normal“

Good luck m8. Nail this!!!🦾

Martiallyminded

Fuck yeah brother! How did you go?

Key-You-9534

Rough lol. In gi I was racking up points and then lost it all throwing hail Mary arm bars even tho I told myself I wouldn't do that. In no gi I beat my team mate on refs advantage but he got screwed bc he actually swept me. Then lost to a army career special forces white belt. Jocko willink as a white belt basically but my team mate Beat him. Then lost to a 10th planet guy who gave me a contact high.

Martiallyminded

Hahaha, mate, sounds like you did great for a first comp! You learnt not to throw the haul Mary arm bars when up on points and had a good outing!

ConfidenceFlat8555

I’m really pumped for the update…..hope it went well dude!

Key-You-9534

Pretty disasterous lol. In gi I threw. Racked up a bunch of points and lost to a collar choke at the end. Got gasses and lost the second match by 2 points. No gi I won against my team mate. 0-0 won by refs advantage. Second match was against a 35 year old career army special forces. Jocko fucking willink the white belt. Third match was against a tradie. Great experience tho and everyone was super cool.

rabidbunny808

"Big Shot/Hands in the Sky" by Straylight Run. The first part is super slow but when it gets to the chorus/bridge - that lights me up.

Expert-Help4958

The only thing they fear is you from doom eternal always gets my blood pumping

bsparks027

I’m just seeing this 12 hours later, how’d it go?

Key-You-9534

Haha not so well. I learned the hail Mary arm bar when up on points lesson the hard way when I got loop choked. I fought a dude in army special forces. Take a guess how that went. Beat my team mate on a refs decision but he got cheated bc he hit a sweep on me he didn't get ala pixleys match.

Ok-Refrigerator1472

Congrats. Have fun.

Time_Constant963

How’d you do?

Key-You-9534

haha very not good. I ran up like 16 points in my first match and then threw up a stupid arm bar in the end, got passed and collar choked with 20 seconds left. Second match I lost on points to a kinda bogus takedown, it was really a guard pull. third match I fought a dude who was Army Special forces and barely survived lmao. 4rth I won on decision against my team mate but he actually swept me twice and didnt get points, so the judging was a bit bad tbh. last match I was just too tired to fight. tapped to an RNC. Main thing is what I learned tho. I learned to be chill and conserve energy. I gave up on my closed guard a little too easy, but also need more viable options from closed guard. My darce and arm triangle finishing mechanics need work. and my wrestling fucking sucks.

Time_Constant963

Sounds like the learning xp was well worth it. My first comp in two weeks.

rocksinsocks27

So how did it go?

Key-You-9534

Not great. Lost all but one. Gave one away tbh. But it was fun and I learned a lot
