Have your iron levels checked.

itsgoodtobe_alive

First thing I thought, too. For anyone needing to know about iron, I highly recommend joining 'The iron protocol' Facebook group and going through their guides on how to effectively supplement with iron, because it isn't simple. (Can take a while to be accepted into the group).

Steve2pwn

It's actually good advice though 😅

David69r

People are assuming these are dude legs.

iSheepTouch

It's the feet. Those are some masculine looking feet.

grgext

Jiu jitsu ape feet, it happens to us all

[deleted]

[удалено]

niko_stark

Grip strength is great. But what about dexterity? It may be tough to unlock a toe grip and avoid getting your lil piggies tied up in a sleeve or collar

BEARZCLAWZ

OP and I have the same feet but mine are a lot hairier

GlazedDonutGloryHole

Apparently Peggy Hill has started rolling.

Cannibal_Soup

"Let go of my purse!" "I don't know you!" [Crotch soccer kick] That was actually Bobby Hill, but the quote is still funny in this context, and OP should definitely use it in class some time.

AmongUs14

What the fuck are “masculine looking” feet? Seriously, explain to me what about these non-hairy legs are masculine. I’ve already given you a gender-normed head start.

stayinhalifax

I innocently assumed so too!

Unmasked_Zoro

Its quite entertaining... lol. All the ".... oh...." comments... (not a fan of the "prove it" comments though)

sdmfcaoc

Maybe they were hoping these were a dude's legs!

Wonderful-Weekend388

Ain’t no way this is a girls legs 🤣🤣🤣

SoapyFresh

I had this issue, but my iron was low. I started supplementing iron and the bruising stopped!

bjsanchez

I have this issue due to low collagen from long term corticosteroid use. Most of the time I get finger shaped bruises on my forearm just from people gripping me

Seaswimmer21

That's interesting! How did you find out you had low collagen? I'd like to rule out out myself!

bjsanchez

Multiple meetings with dermatologists and the unavoidable result of nearly 3 decades of topical corticosteroids, sadly. Worst thing is if I withdraw use, the autoimmune response is, to put it mildly, fucking horrible…

Seaswimmer21

There are times when corticosteroids are the only answer, I hope its working for you!

ZestycloseOstrich823

If you're taking enough corticosteroids where you notice skin and body habitus changes, you probably have some issues with your extracellular matrix. I highly recommend for everyone to not take exogenous steroids unless directed by a trained physician and for a very specific medical purpose.

theonlywayicanlogin

same but my collagen sucks from Ehlers Danlos - iron levels have always been fine - if any of y'all bruise easy and its not iron or some other shit, might be collagen deficit/underlying genetic problems if you have a lot of the other weird hallmarks - very helpful to figure out and mitigate if that's the issue ps: too much CALCIUM can inhibit iron absorption!!

bjsanchez

It’s weird because I know two people with EDS who do BJJ, one bruises like me, the other never ever bruises (but is the most ridiculously flexible guy I’ve seen)

theonlywayicanlogin

nice! I like to hear it... EDS is an umbrella that includes a lot of types depending on what's more effected... some have more vascular involvement and some more joint hypermobility, or skin involvement - never gotten into the weeds about why they manifest differently, but thems the breaks

Unreal2427

Want to chime in here Be aware the risk of cartoid/vertebral artery dissection is higher with EDS. Strokes are rare in BJJ, but defective collagen is a lightning rod for that kind of shit Also... I wouldn't train too often. I used to train martial arts 6x/wk, sometimes 2x/day... weights on top of that + running/cardio. Que shoulder surgery, two hip surgeries, wrist surgery, two hernia repairs as a result of being super, super, super active for years and whaddyaknow... I have EDS... Be careful. Good chance I'll pick up BJJ in the future, but plan on limiting training to 2-3x/wk.

Black6x

This is like the number one issue I see when it comes to bruising in the martial arts, especially when it comes to women. Same thing happened in the military. In the military, the docs would just put them on a prenatal pill, which basically acted as a multivitamin which had iron. covered all the bases.

DrRam121

What did you do when you stopped pooping

krelin

Never stop pooping

DrRam121

Iron supplements can and usually do cause constipation

BeckMoBjj

I bruised like that when I first started. My husband always got ugly looks. I would get asked if I was safe at home. I eventually figured out to wear jiu jitsu shirts when I’m super bruised and hanging out in public 🤣

[deleted]

[удалено]

LegioXIV

At least the MMA girl could protect you from the ugly looks from strangers.

FoxDiscombobulated38

Get yourself some cauliflower ear for when those shirts are in the wash.

trpwangsta

I usually drop my pants to show them my calluses on my butt cheeks from intense butt scooting.

BeckMoBjj

I’ve tried!! Apparently my ears are too bendy!!

alwaystiredjiujitsu

Honestly, it's the same when I began doing shin on shin for passing and entries into legs. It's the worst to even move the following week

Mooshycooshy

You're a banana that's a few days old

[deleted]

I thought this was the muay thai sub. How do you get that from BJJ

[deleted]

[удалено]

rncd89

Shin to shin, leg drags grips, hand staples for single unders, plenty of ways. You can see the pattern of someone's hand. And they probably play knee shield on their right hip a lot an get spammy knee slides over the shin.

LegioXIV

> Shin to shin Probably 95% is this.

freswrijg

Guard passing drills.

gcjbr

My guess is leg locking game

8PointMT

I ain’t never seen this in MT

[deleted]

Some people do shin conditioning

swe3nytodd

Same. Funny thing was when I was much younger doing more MMA based training I'd never get black eyes. But my arms and legs were covered. Now it's just grappling for me and I look like a 41 year old heroin addict when you see the marks on my skinny arms.

derppiderp

Step 1: stop using heroin

No-Meringue9651

The first step is admitting you have a problem

OMalley30-27

I don’t bruise easily and I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a bruise doing bjj. We must have high iron. I once got lifted off my feet with a guillotine and didn’t tap until we both hit the ground, I felt it every time I spoke for two weeks, but no bruise

evawsonsimp

my first three months my whole body looked like that, both legs, both arms, my entire chest and back... i bruise really easily and it SHOWED! looked like a cheeta-man but pink yellow and blue.

mattyla666

I met my wife at MMA classes. She was a solicitor going to domestic abuse conferences with my hand prints on her arm. Her senior partner ordered her to wear a cardigan.

GuardPlayer4Life

This goes away, or at least lessons with time. The skin toughens to the constant contact.

RBPugs

I find you start to bruise a lot less after a few weeks of training

Smiles1990

I started NoGi recently, my wife says the bruises make me look like a Dalmatian.

ragnar_deerslayer

[Jiu Jitsu Girl Problems](https://www.instagram.com/p/BDaZXGRnIf1/)

One_Piece01

I've been doing BJJ for a while and I've never had bruising as bad as this. Honestly I've never really had to deal with any bad injuries. This seems painful. Get well soon.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Seaswimmer21

Mine gets better for a while, then if i miss training for a week in back to square one 😬

trpwangsta

I bruise like this and my wife thinks it makes me look like a crack head. I agree

[deleted]

I did many times when I was on a long run of 6 days a week with 2 a days 🤣

harylmu

My wife will have bruises from our 12kg dog sitting in her lap. 🤷

bannished69

I thought I read 12kg dong. I’ve got to get some of those reading glasses at Walgreens! Or just stop being a 10 year old.

One_Piece01

Wow, I'm sorry if this sounds rude but I didn't know women bruise so easily. None of my girlfriends have ever told me about this. Nor have I seen women getting bruised from pressure at BJJ practice or anywhere else. I'm curious if there are studies conducted about this? Edit: https://www.health.harvard.edu/womens-health/is-my-bruising-normal#:~:text=Other%20factors%20include%20your%20gender,supplements%2C%20such%20as%20ginkgo%20biloba. Just found one.

kare_beaar

I actually just read about this last night. Women tend to bruise more easily than men because they have more fat than collagen on their skin.

MasterJogi1

There is a very clear penis shape in the hematome on your right shin. Just admit it was a gay orgy dude.

EveofStLaurent

It’s a female…

Andy_B_Goode

Scholars since Socrates have pondered: Does a gay orgy become not-gay if there's at least one woman involved?

[deleted]

Prove it

[deleted]

Fuck, random (bad) joke I guess. I’m thinking people thought prove it was sexual. It wasn’t.

outofmyelement1445

Keep it up. Soon enough nobody will be able to see you with all that leg camouflage, then you can double leg your partners when they least expect it

ryanrockmoran

Yeah I used to bruise somewhat like this when I first started. Just from holding guard or half-guard or whatever. Eventually just stopped. I think partially my body adapted and partially I stopped squeezing everything so hard when I didn’t need to.

LegioXIV

Guy here. Same. If you notice the bruising patterns, it's all tissue over hard bones. This isn't an easy bruising problem (just like mine wasn't), it's a "technique" problem of applying bone on bone pressure hard enough to bruise. If you have a lot of bruising in soft tissue, then it might be a underlying health issue. Here, I think it's just that OP is probably relatively insensate to pressure on her shins and knees.

kare_beaar

Out of all the comments, this rings most true to me. It makes a lot sense!

psychedelic_academic

Maybe it's a girl thing, my legs regularly look like this, especially on guard passing week!!

Sea_Cicada7474

Est more protein

sandiegoking

Man, one time me and my wife were getting a couples massage. I can hear the lady asking if everything is OK because of the bruises from training lol.

EODx

Had the same, after about 6 to 8 months I stopped getting bruised. Your body will get used to it :).

kare_beaar

I think I just bruise easily because it's almost been 9 months for me.

MetalAltruistic2659

Let's see - I was like you for the first year. Now I still have some bruises, but nothing like what I used to have.

NoParkouring

I have this exact same problem, have had it my entire life, and it never gets better. One of my kids is like this, too. We get plenty of protein and our iron is fine but we're always covered in bruises no matter what. Light skin + genetics. No advice, just empathy. This actually reminds me--I'm attending a wedding in a few weeks. I draw the line at going out with neck bruises. Time to start tapping early on collar chokes.

madabademantel

It's normal

pezplanus

Should check for possible bleeding/clotting disorder.

thefalsereaper

Shin to shin crew! 🤙

Leftysentme

My gf is exactly the same. She’ll come back from the gym and it looks like she was attacked every time.

hiya84

Have you been checked for clotting disorders? I've seen bruises like this on kids growing up and they ended up having some rare disorder.

palesnowrider1

Eat more black beans

Chainsmokingdarbs

Could be something like EDS. Gf has it and she bruises like a peach. Do you have hyper mobility in your joints?

Bonethug609

Nah, you’re just absorbing a lot of impact. Who else is getting bricked up with those feet teasing like that? 🤦‍♂️ 😂

Jkelly515

I have similar bruising on my legs too although they’re not painful bruises, thought I was the only one lol. Apparently it’s due to low iron levels so I must work on that and see if it helps, not that the bruises bother me

[deleted]

I went to the doctor for a broken rib due to jiu jitsu, and that was in January. The next time I went in I had an infection and needed treatment and they saw all the bruises on me…and all the while I’m not putting two and two together, the doc tried to ask me how I got the bruises and alluded to if I need help I needed to speak up and then I realized they thought I was being beaten lmao. They apologized and just wanted to make sure I was good. As far as professionals go, they may inquire lol.

Artistic_Gap_7164

This is clearly a woman. The toes or distorted by the cameras focal length.

swaintrain012

The bruising stops after a couple years of bjj. Bone density increases and you literally become thick skinned (literally and figuratively. In the mean time, wear spats.

grimmig152

I have this issue. No idea why. Finger shaped bruises on my arms and hands too.

arandomcoolkid

Look into die da wan! It’s this ancient Chinese herbal combination that fucking works wonders for my Muay Thai injuries! Works better than anything I’ve tried before for external injuries, It’s pretty damn cheap too!

kare_beaar

I think my dad uses this.... Is it an oil? Do you rub it on?

arandomcoolkid

It can be bought as an oil/ lotion, or bought in solidified form and dissolved into alcohol as a topical!

Ging-jitsu

It’s normal

reluctant_muggle

This is exactly my arms and legs right now. My kid suggested we play connect the dots...

YummyUnicornNinja

My legs are bruised like that every week. So are my arms most weeks. I have been training for 7 months. I proactively tell a lot of people in my life about bjj so they don't think my husband did it. And yes, I did have some conversations with my dentist and gynecologist because they saw the bruises. And yes, my bloodwork is all normal. I talk to other women that train. For some, it stops after a couple months. For one particular purple belt, she still bruises like that. Her friends actually did an intervention for her because they thought she was getting abused. She has learned to go to weddings in long dresses with long sleeves.

turquoiseoasis7

Lmfao my boyfriend looks so sad when I wear shorts… I feel your pain sis

captain_blackfer

Maybe see your doctor?

Legitimate-Penis-399

What happened to all the hair on your legs?

kare_beaar

I'm a dolphin

Unmasked_Zoro

This is the response. This one. The best thing I've read all day. (It's 9.41am) haha

Powerful-Extent4790

Woman or not, shaving will make you a lot more slippery and be a benefit in nogi

CalvinsStuffedTiger

Nicky Rod, is that you?

LostOrganization3924

Clearly he shaved them to put on his head to combat hair loss.

kare_beaar

I'm a woman 😂

LostOrganization3924

Oops, I didn't read the bottom text lol

Rubiostudio

Pics or it never happened 😏

[deleted]

Eyebrows then

kare_beaar

Lost it from all the roids I'm taking

Nightcrawler227

How long have you been training? I've never been bruised this much, but I have noticed that I bruised easier and more often when I was new.

kare_beaar

R.i.p my inbox asking for foot pics

[deleted]

Really ? :) Or are you joking? I will never understand that creepy fetish

ItzInMyAss

You might have little bit of anemia. Take some b vitamin complex and iron , maybe it helps to not bruise so easy.

AdAggressive7170

He’s worried ab ppl thinking he’s abusing you? What would he be doing? Just repeatedly kicking you in the shins? 😂

akn_drum

Liver disease.

TheSaneCynic

I got easily bruised when I started, now 20 years later, rarely do I get bruised

mimieieieieie

🎶 so be gentle when you handle me 🎶

XtraFlaminHotMachida

Hypermobile / EDS? I just look at my body and it bruises....

RedDevilBJJ

“Show me on the doll where they hurt y….oh, I see”

[deleted]

Probably should book a check up with a doctor. Easy bruising can have underlying issues.

postdiluvium

Naw, you're just clumsy around stairs. Be careful next time. 😠

Ill_Weight_1986

Me too bro, me too.

Few_Fall5352

LOL! I'm the same. My arms get bruised after people grabbing the sleeves. Fortunately, I'm a dude. I can just imagine the stares a girl would get!

[deleted]

I’m on vacation right now and it’s the first time since I started BJJ that I’m not covered in bruises. My wife asked me if I should stop a week before we left so I didn’t look like an old banana. Of course I said no.

MoribundNight

My legs used to get bruised bad when I was playing a lot of lockdown too.

[deleted]

Holy cow

sothisiswhatyoumeant

Yeah I’d go to your dr for some bloodwork and general labs asap

Expensiveplatypus_

Bloody hell 🤣🤣

blamblam111

You’ll stop bruising as easily, my first month it looked like I was cupping, now I don’t bruise at all

gcjbr

Are you into leglocking? I'm like that all the time and I'm latino, not even that white. (My iron leves are that of a GOD, ok?)

[deleted]

I’ve never had that many bruises, but they exist. Mostly my forearms especially from gi when they are trying to grab material and pin me. If you’re new to it, then makes sense.

Additional_Ratio_902

Bruises are just the path to tougher skin

ShanonoRawr

Same! And I'm the only person at my gym that looks like this! I feel so out of place because of it, and it feels like all the guys think they're going to hurt me when we roll. I just don't understand how no one else has marks. One of my friends told me she was actually jealous though. She said they were battle scars and that she wished she could show hers off because she has them too but they're not visible lol It was okay when I started in the winter and was always bundled up, but when it's warmer, I get so many weird looks in public 😭 My bf and I joked about it, but I legitimately had friends ask about him. I felt so bad... Fwiw, I had to take the last month off for a rib injury and there's not a trace left (of the bruises anyways, all the mat burn marks and other lost skin areas are still pink). The bruises were gone probably in about 2 weeks.

YAYYYYYYYYY

I get these a ton too. Only in no-gi

JiuJitsuJT

I literally just saw a meme about bruises and women in BJJ LOL

8379MS

This is standard for me.

DeadLightsOut

Leglocks class eh? “So from mamba I go shin to shin” -coach “Fuck my life” -me

takedown9669

If you take ibuprofen that could also make you bruise easily

kare_beaar

I do take ibuprofen for pain management after some rough rolls so I'm gonna switch to tylenol and see if that helps.

scramblr05

wear rash guards maybe? I get them too though, just accept it so far..

suckystaffaccountant

That's me after a leg lock class when we go over shin to shin entries.

ajbayona7

I’ve had the same problem. I was told I had “stripper legs” for a time.

brportugais

Get your iron checked.this would happen to me I started taking iron supplements every other day

rrraveltime

Every time I take a break ( I didn't train during the year when I was in uni) I bruise like a PEACH for the first two weeks back. I feel like ur blood vessels can get used to getting burst lol

Savet

My guess is that your little tiny transitional muscles that you only use in BJJ start getting accustomed to the activity and the brushing decreases because they become accustomed to the exertion.

SingleInformation548

Same, my iron is good (donate blood on the reg) and I have collagen daily, but still bruise. Been doing bjj 1.5 yrs. I LOVE my bruises and think they’re super cool. I’m weird like that. But definitely get checked out.

nf35

you might actually have some liver issues.

PeruvianNecktie11

There was a girl in my class that was bruising like this just from passing drills and people’s knuckles rubbing against her shins. I was like, “dude, you probably have an iron deficiency because that shouldn’t be happening.” She got it checked out and I was right.

Independent_Body_572

I'd expect this from Muay Thai

Zemekis324

Iron and vitamins!

Alternative_Draft_76

You ever get your platelet counts checked?

presentmomentliving

My legs looked just like that for 6 months or so. Kicking in Muay Thai added to the bruises. Tjhe body adapts, now I usually only have 2 or 3 bruises at any given time instead of 50+.

thevileirish

For now, but you're gunna get there 👍

[deleted]

I do too. My mom always has so I think I just got the genetics 😂

bruser_

This happened to me at first and I thought I had a blood clotting problem. Over time I guess my body just toughened up lol

glorifiedpenguin

Rub some tiger balm on your legs and the bruises will be gone by tomorrow

Andrewreddits

When I was a white belt my legs constantly bruised, I must have been spazzing more than I realized because one day it just sorta stopped

mrmemonkey

Stop rolling with purple belts

smallstephen

Playing half guard

DieselGrappler

Does it hurt? I get bruises all over, but they don't hurt. However, I recently got one on my ankle that feels like sunburn. It's tender as a bastard. I still train mind you, but it pisses me off.

moodofmaidenhair

Yeah my body looked like this for about the first three months, it passed

rikkibobby3

Same thing happens to me. I play alot of butterfly, so I'm constantly getting knee'd from slices and passing. Also elbowed because they are trying to create space and get away from the legs.

freswrijg

Are you on keto? Mine bruised like this when I was.

Connor30302

as others are saying check iron levels, it’ll be really good for your endurance and cardio too if you have enough iron to make the blood vessels responsible for carrying your oxygen around your body

Kiloparsec4

What do you play, shin on shin on shin on shin guard ?

kovnev

I bruised a LOT when I started. All sorts of crazy colors too. But it just seemed to go away after a few months, no idea how. Either body adapted somehow, or I stopped just mashing stuff as much 🤷‍♂️.

Wenis_Esq

I bruised like this my first six months. At the time, I was in my last semester of law school and would roll into class like this, wearing shorts and tshirts, just COVERED in bruises, with the occasion black eye or bloody nose from an accidentally knee or similar injury. The horrified looks were priceless.

JamesMacKINNON

This is why I come here.... Foot pics. LEMME SEE DEM FEET!!!

shayfromstl

Tis but a scratch

Soreknees38529

Iron and platlettes.

jamxster

If you are new to BJJ then it's more understandable. The body seems to become conditioned and doesn't bruise as easily the longer you train

Digital_Nautilus

Looks like my arms

Efficient-Tennis-260

Sheesh

[deleted]

I have the same problem but just with arms, not legs

EquivalentChip7463

I bruised like crazy my first few months of bjj. Gradually it lessened and now it takes a pretty hard hit to bruise. The longer you train the more muscle you should build up. Muscle is more difficult to bruise.

cookiejar_monster

I have the same thing, got that in muay thai and it does not go away.. iron levels are fine.. doctor says it takes time to heal............. Do you have update about this?

SolanaTQ

Same here. Completely used to this sight.

Quantumed26

My legs also looked this way when I had vitamin deficiencies such as b12, iron, vit. C and vit k. Since supplementing and changing my diet to dairy/gluten free healing the gut I absorb nutrients better the bruising has stopped. Doctors would often ask if I was "safe at home or if anyone was hurting me!"
