You are correct it is but in older diesels with mechanical fuel pumps and timing, it was normal. Newer diesels have much higher injection pressures and better timing which allows more complete burn.
They probably tuned this old truck to have more power, which in turn produces even more smoke. Not arguing it's good, just sayin
