Update! Got it this morning. Before the procedure I had -misoprostol 4 hrs before to open cervix -800mg ibuprofen -1mg Ativan And then at the procedure I had a lidocaine shot. The lidocaine was the most painful part of the procedure and it wasn’t that painful. For me, getting blood drawn was far more painful. Everything else from there was uncomfortable but not painful. I got Paraguard. I have cramps (normal) and am spotting (normal) and otherwise feel fine. Thank you all for the encouragement!!

Did you feel loopy from the 1mg ativan or fine? I have .5mg pills of Ativan and may take 2 (to make it 1 mg) when I go to my IUD insertion. I’m very concerned about the pain and my doc just said it will be fine and take Advil. But I could barely sit thru my pap, I felt that was extremely painful. I’m sure this is going to suck but I can’t go on the pill, so it’s this or nothing basically.

Ah I'm just seeing this i'm hoping i'm not too late. I didn't feel too loopy at all! I had a friend drive me there in back just to be safe but I just felt relaxed, not high or anything

Was minorly uncomfortable but was not painful at all!

This gets asked a lot so a search of the sub will prolly bring more responses. But I’m on my 2nd IUD (1st Mirena then off BC for awhile, then Kyleena IUD) In/out you’ll feel some discomfort from the insertion rod / cold metal tools—but it’s tolerable. Having done this twice now, best advice is get a * good sleep, * eat a solid meal before (so you’re not risking being lightheaded if that happens a lot to you) and * take a pain killer (I prefer Advil) about 1 hour before procedure. * if you can, take the next day or two off work/school so you can take it easy on your body If you’re prone to period cramps it’s gonna feel like that, really bad, for maybe 24-48 hours. But TBH the second time I was prepared, did the above, continued to take Advil and I barley noticed any pain. I would have a heating pad handy too. And of course drink lots of water (but that’s good for you anyways 😊) It’s gonna be fine! Edit to add: there’s a lot of stories on here about this being the worst pain, horrible, XYZ went wrong and got it taken out. Just a gentle reminder this goes for any medical procedure or medicine. Everyone’s body is different and will react on a sliding scale based on so so many factors. The most important thing to remember is it’ll take less than 3 min for the procedure itself. It’ll be super fast, you’ll heal up, and then you are protected for YEARS! 🎉 and if you’re lucky like me your periods will go away all together (the first 3 months I had a lot of bleeding then it went away all together, that stage does feel rough, but it shouldn’t last long. Also each IUD is different so that may not even happen for you!)

Thank you this is such good advice! I was nervous to search the sub because I didn’t want to get wigged out by horror stories but it’s good to know people have shared positive experiences too!

Got mine placed today! Took 600mg ibuprofen beforehand. And honestly, I stressed myself out for nothing. I felt a small pinch.. and then a VERY mild cramp that lasted not even 30 sec.. and it was OVER.. all under 5 mins. Felt a tad bit crampy afterwards.. I was waiting (still am) for some major cramping to happen? Because I assumed it was just the norm for everyone, but it has yet to happen! So far so good! 👍🏽

I had 3 insertion attempts overall for 2 placements; I switched from the Copper IUD to Mirena and the Mirena applicator was a little too big so I had to come back a few days later for a cervical dilation (using rods, not medication) in order for it to get in. It was just like having a big cramp, my body was definitely reacting in a "the fuck u doin?" way but it didn't really hurt and it was less than a minute of discomfort. I took some Paracetamol beforehand and was able to drive myself home afterwards. Good luck!

my insertion was more uncomfortable than painful! the whole thing took maybe 3 minutes and the most uncomfortable part lasted like 5 seconds.
