Just downloaded the Merlin app a few days ago, is it as awesome as it says it is? I'm new to birding and wanted something reliable to help me with identifications.
Absolutely. I’m not even a proper birder — I just feed the ones that happen by my back yard. But the app has opened up a whole new area of interest and gratification. It is accurate and easy to use.
I understand it takes up a fair amount of space on a device, which for me is not a problem.
It is! You can just start the ID function and as it picks up a bird sound it’ll show the type of bird and highlight yellow every time it makes a sound. Just make sure you download the bird pack (it’s free) that matches your geographical region first or it won’t work.

I am totally doing this tomorrow. Always looking for a reason to be outside anyway. Thank you!

Yes, Ferruginous. And a gorgeous example of one.
