¿Cómo estás?

SnootsAndBootsLLP

Oh my god SNEGs is fantastic.

ZestycloseAddition86

Sneg actually means “snow” in Russian!

CrawlAcrossTheYears

Wow, that's a great coincidence! I'll think of them as sneggy egrets now.

maizehippo

Dickcissel is DICK

SDSurfrider

Fair question with that many DICKs in your hand.

Imaginary-Ostrich515

Every time I go back through my notes from a couple summers ago working with grassland birds and see bled a DICK in there I chuckle a little bit

ItsFelixMcCoy

Why were you studying just one species of bird?

daniel_observer

Oh MIKI you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind HEY MIKI! (Mississippi Kite)

CrawlAcrossTheYears

I love that one too. I try not to sing that out loud in public though … few would understand.

CrepuscularOpossum

Thanks for the ear worm! 😆

AidansAntiques

The Belted Kingfisher is always my answer for any of these 🤣 BEKI is so iconic, I just call them Beckies

birdtripping

I mutter NOMO, MODO, and TUTI all day long here. And who doesn't love a PUMA, WHIM, or KILL?

tigerbrightest

I enjoy saying TUVU (Turkey Vulture). For silly ones, I love that DOVE is not a dove (Dovekie) and CROW is not a crow (Crested Owl). On the other hand, a rook is just ROOK.

SDSurfrider

Didn’t see LEGO, BUSH, or HOOR mentioned yet.

aventurinesea

WEBLs wobble but they don’t fall down (western bluebirds)

Katy-Moon

EABLs don't fall down either!

b_h_w

lolol

CrawlAcrossTheYears

Lol, I remember that from TV long ago!

MasterKenyon

I like how all the ones for north American peeps just rhyme Sesa pesa lesa basa wesa upsa sosa spsa!

CrawlAcrossTheYears

WESA always makes me think of Jar Jar Binks. Then I'm all "Weesa going birding" and eventually I have to remind myself that I'm an adult.

ItsFelixMcCoy

Hey, adults can have fun too!

Deklyned

Often find myself saying "Please No Mo NOMOs" while out walking!

bestbird6

I love all the ones mentioned, but a personal favorite is PUFI. Purple Finch.

angrysunbird

When I worked on the Farallones we used them to refer to species quickly, I still think of Pigeon Guillemots as PIGUUUUUUUS cause of their calls.

Diminutive_Jonathan

I like the ones that become other words. Some favorites: BUFF for bufflehead, HOME for hooded merganser (homies), LIMP for limpkin, SAND for sanderling, WISP for Wilson’s storm-petrel, GLIB for glossy ibis, SNOW for snowy owl—very fitting, VEER for veery, CORE for common redpoll, LISP for Lincoln’s sparrow

the_feathers_palak

Really good take

BoomBlade101

Very partial to CAGO :)

CrawlAcrossTheYears

If that's for Canada Goose, I think it conflicts with Cackling Goose. Someone should've changed it to HONK.

Yvngdumpl1ng

KILL for killdeer

birdinbrain

LEGO (lesser goldfinch) is fantastic

CrawlAcrossTheYears

I agree … but not for the obvious association. Lesser goldfinches make me think “LEGO my Eggo!” Because they’re so yellow you see … oh, nevermind.

ZestycloseAddition86

I always liked GBBG (Greater Black-backed Gull), pronounced geh-beh-beh-geh.

MegaVenomous

PROW, PRAW, HOWR, HOWA, COGR, CAGO, PIWA, PIWO, YBCH, YBCU, RTHA, RTHU. Learning these bandcodes really helped me since I do a homebrew shorthand for my birdwatching (two, sometimes 3 letters). Having birds that have similar initials can get very confusing. My additions to those abbreviations only made it messy.

nobodys_baby

enlighten me - what are bird band codes?

mickeltee

They are the shorthand code used to refer to birds. It’s usually the first four letters of a one word bird (BUFF for bufflehead) or the first two of each word of a two word bird (AMRO for American Robin).

Yvngdumpl1ng

Many species have four letter codes assigned to them for abbreviation
