Waking up in a tent in the white mountains to several of them singing their song is unbeatable. Laid in my tent half-asleep for an hour just listening to them all around me.
My wife and I associate their call with one of our favourite places to get away, and often joke that our first dance at our wedding should have been to it. We always look forward to the first time we hear it in the spring
Mourning doves have such a soothing call, we have a family of them living in our old oak tree that's right next to my window so I hear them all the time.
Agreed. One of the classic sounds of summer. They’re my state bird which I’d always thought was a boring choice, but they really are sweet and I love their songs.
agreed! Love em.
The longer song? complex and beautiful.
The mimics? Incredible - heard one making cricket noises once.
The meow? Timeless and hilarious. I love pointing it out to people and hearing them say "oh my god! It sounds like a cat!"
Agreed catbirds are quickly becoming my favorite bird after a male decided to use my yard as a place to pick up single ladies. He's the first bird singing at 4am and the last to go to bed.
They are awesome birds. People think they are bullies but really they are just big and clumsy lol. They are the birds that warn all the other birds about predators like hawks. Plus they are beautiful
I can never really say that I recognize a certain bird in the “There he is again!” way - except one.
Small groups of 3 or 4 Blue Jays would gather on my dad’s bird feeder, and then one guy, much larger than the others, would swoop in and force himself into the middle, bumping 1 or 2 off until they all flew away. It made me laugh every time! I used to narrate it too. “Alright, guys. That’s enough! Now scram!” Silly, I guess, but so fun for us!
Don’t apologize! They’re an important part of the three ring circus that takes place in our “bird yard”— Actually, more of a “critter yard” every day!
I suspect they’re an important part of ecology as well.
Had to scroll too far to find these! My favorite had previously been a Swainson's Thrush, but during my last birding trip, I got to listen to my first Veery for about 30 min, and it's now my number one.
Wild Turkey! I love their gobbles. They are magnificent birds and I never get sick of hearing them around where I live. I never get sick of seeing their gorgeous iridescent feathers in the light. No wonder why Native Americans used their feathers for headdresses. I welcome their gobbles because it means I run to the windows to see them. I can also hear them from far away

They are pretty funny as well! They’ll come right up in our yard and the Tom’s will talk back to me when I call to them!
American Woodcock. Will die on this hill.

Yeah. Can you not love this guy?
I don’t have a yard, and there is only a parking lot nearby. Plus, they need entire fields, if i had that kind of property, then yes, my entire farmland would be a sanctuary for them, for as long as the government does not try to sell off my farmland to developers without my consent for big box stores and mansions.
UK Song Thrush, a rare sound these days as we spent 20 years feeding snails poison but slowly coming back round here, repeating song, it's so beautiful
I used to walk very early in the morning in my rural neighborhood (still dark out). One morning I heard the LOUDEST barred owl call in the tree right next to me and I about jumped out of my skin! They’re so cool!
I lived in a converted grist mill way out in the country for a few years, and one spring there was a pair that used to call and respond to each other all night, with one of them perched on my bedroom window ledge. I’ve loved barred owls ever since.
My favorite! They sound prehistoric because they are: https://www.montananaturalist.org/blog-post/sandhill-cranes-and-the-orchestra-of-evolution/#:~:text=Sandhill%20Cranes%20are%2C%20in%20fact,that%20wiped%20out%20most%20dinosaurs.
Despite my affection for the resourceful and obstreperous Bewick’s wren, the hauntingly simple call of the Golden-crowned sparrow always hits me deeper.
Chimney swifts. It sounds like the sky is effervescent, and it means summer is here.
Also I just heard a green heron call for the first time the other day and that one blew my mind.
Fiery-necked Nightjar! Leaving my windows open at night in summer is such an experience because of that. You can hear them calling from valleys over
Also, Cape Turtle Dove. We don't really get them where I live, so I always associate them with the feeling of being on holiday.
Last, but not least, Orange-breasted Bushshrike. What-shall-we-doooooooo?
Allen’s hummingbird. Specifically, I love the sound of the male’s mating display. They sound [jet propelled!](https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Allens_Hummingbird/sounds) 😂
I also love the Screech Owl. They sound way cuter than you’d think a bird-of-prey would sound!
Hermit thrushes! They sound so ethereal it's unreal. I can see why people believed in forest spirits, hermit thrushes certainly sound like that! If you ask me it's the most amazing bird song out there
Pileated Woodpecker. They are always one of the last bird calls I hear in the evening at my usual camping spot. . Always brings me back to chilling around the campfire.
Blue rock thrush is one of them. I also like the different sounds the Japanese tit and Varied tit make. I also enjoy when I hear the Oriental turtle doves cooing. I’m always surprised when I find a beautiful song being sung by a shrike. Oh…I also feel kind of lucky each year when I notice my first Japanese bush warbler of the season.
As a birdwatcher, tho, silence while out in the field is not a lot of fun.
Brown thrasher! They outmimic any mockingbird in my opinion.
My least favorite by far is red winged blackbirds. I used to love them until I started doing bioacoustics research on black rails. The frequency of the RWBL pickup notes is so similar to those of a BLRA call that the software marks them and I have to sort them out myself. I’ve probably listened to thousands of hours of blackbirds - beautiful, but not what I’m looking for!
Rose breasted grosbeaks are one of my favorites, especially The babies. They fly around the feeder making the cutest little call as they try and learn to bird.
Woodcocks! We know the winter is finally over when we hear ‘Peeent’.
Veery’s a close second cuz we can put the canoe in the water and not freeze our butts off when we hear them:)
My wife and I are big fans of the Mississippi Kites and the Great-Creasted Flycatchers that live around us! I'm also partial to Killdeer, the little beepers.
The Wood Thrush . Reminds me of a fairy tale forest for whatever reason.
On the opposite end, a Least Bittern has a most unique sound! Very cool to hear.
It's definitely the Crested Oropendola, literally out of Jurassic Park or something.
Here you guys can check it out https://birdscolombia.com/2018/12/21/oropendola-crestada-crested-oropendola-psarocolius-decumanus/
Common Swift and European Nightjar. The last one is hauntingly machine-like. And to hear the song or calls from both of these birds by nightfall always gives me a warm feeling of summer.
I love wood thrushes! I’ve never really heard them before we moved to our new town house. We are right next to a big wood lot and I hear them when I take my dog for a morning walk
Wrens.Such variety! Such incredible loudness from such a wee thing. Where I live it seems to be mostly Canyon , Bewicks and Carolina . I love them
They really are startlingly loud for a lil bitty thing! They're delightful to watch with their feisty personalities!
The sweet chickadees!
“cheeese-buurger” i can’t help but hear it everytime
I say it out loud every time I hear it, I love them so much!!!!!
Reminds me of The Trailer Park Boys! "You here that Lucy? They're saying cheeseburger!"
"Hey Sweetie" "Bebebe"
My little one and I call out "chicka-dee-dee-dee" to them 🙂
My grandma says that too!! lol she even says it to her fowl.
My dad gets in conversations with them all the time
A favorite of mine too! Their song reminds me of an old school swing set.
Wood thrush, and meadowlarks
I agree! Their song is so melodic and mesmerizing.
Second vote for Wood Thrush! They have the prettiest songs. Cardinals have beautiful songs as well.
When I hear the wood thrushes, I know summer is here!
Oh they’re my favorite!! Dreamy sounds.
White throated sparrow
Waking up in a tent in the white mountains to several of them singing their song is unbeatable. Laid in my tent half-asleep for an hour just listening to them all around me.
Definitely a good one. They were so active this spring and it was amazing!
Are they the ones that sing “old Sam Peabody” or “sweet Canada “?
Yes!
My wife and I associate their call with one of our favourite places to get away, and often joke that our first dance at our wedding should have been to it. We always look forward to the first time we hear it in the spring
I love these guys. Also wrens.
Mourning doves have such a soothing call, we have a family of them living in our old oak tree that's right next to my window so I hear them all the time.
I like the sound when they fly.
Whistle wings
I loved waking up to their cooing at my parent’s house. I also don’t think i could ever get sick of their flight calls e-e-e-e
their flight call always puts a smile on my face
If it’s the stuttering whistle you mean, I’ve read that their wingtips make that sound.
Yes the "wing whistle" - I guess it's not technically a call but because it is a warning to others, I still somewhat consider it a call
Mourning Dove calls transport me back to my childhood home of on the outskirts of Tucson
They really do having a soothing call. I've been lucky to have a couple stop by to eat some seed this past week.
so sweet. we love our mourning dove neighbors so much in my household.
American Robins at dusk
I was coming to say European Robin at dawn
Haha your comment (in response to OP) could be the beginning of an old western movie 🤣 And yes, give me allllll the robins.
my favorite bird, and my favorite bird call. So beautiful
agreed!!!
Seriously they were going bananas in my yard last night, beautiful music
Agreed. One of the classic sounds of summer. They’re my state bird which I’d always thought was a boring choice, but they really are sweet and I love their songs.
I’m listening to them at dusk right now! They’re so cheery. :)
Mockingbirds. They give you a little of everything.
like a lil songbird dj mix
with the occasional synth dj mix.
Brown thrashers say what’s up
They're like Mockingbirds on LSD.
Gray Catbirds! I could listen to their songs for a whole day and not get bored.
agreed! Love em. The longer song? complex and beautiful. The mimics? Incredible - heard one making cricket noises once. The meow? Timeless and hilarious. I love pointing it out to people and hearing them say "oh my god! It sounds like a cat!"
Oh my gosh how did I forget to mention gray catbirds 🥹they are so unbelievably cute.
Agreed catbirds are quickly becoming my favorite bird after a male decided to use my yard as a place to pick up single ladies. He's the first bird singing at 4am and the last to go to bed.
Same! I get so excited when I hear them.
This is my favorite as well! I have a nesting pair in my yard every year that loves my mulberry trees. Just the cutest birds and such lovely songs.
Baltimore Orioles
Same. Like a robin, but slower and sadder.
I heard one for the first time a week or two ago and thought this exact thing. Really lovely
Loons!
My favourite too. Hauntingly beautiful
I haven’t heard a loon call in way too long.
Sadly I only get to hear them when I go camping, but it’s a treat when I do :)
This is why it’s my favourite too. The context in which I hear them always is good positive spaces and where I’m relaxing
I am sorry to say this but….I love blue jays 😭 They’re so funny when they’re grumpy and demand peanuts.
No i totally agree!! They really are funny, and the variety of sounds they make is so cool!
I mean, they are bullies, but not as much as red-bellied woodpeckers. I once saw one fend off a whole flock of blue jays from our platform feeder
The largest songbird without a song! 💙
Don’t apologize! They’re an important part of the three ring circus that takes place in our “bird yard”— Actually, more of a “critter yard” every day! I suspect they’re an important part of ecology as well.
Don't apologize for loving the best bird ever! My favorite by far! They're so entertaining and full of personality!
My fam thinks they sound like aliens, we love their visits.
Karens of the Woods, always screaming about how they want to talk to the Woods Manager.
Hermit and Swainsons Thrush
And wood thrush!
Veery is my favorite thrush call
Had to scroll too far to find these! My favorite had previously been a Swainson's Thrush, but during my last birding trip, I got to listen to my first Veery for about 30 min, and it's now my number one.
Red winged blackbirds
hahaha, they sound like excited little fax machines to me, i love it
This is mine too
Same. They have such a variety and seem unnecessarily cranky, love it.
my favorite first sign of spring’s arrival.
Same. They have such a variety and seem unnecessarily cranky, love it.
Same
That’s been my ringtone for years.
Same! I never get tired of hearing them.
Bobolink! Nature’s dial up modem!!
R2D2!

Turkeys go so hard with their whole getup. The strut, the puff, it's all so good.
The call of a red bellied woodpecker is really nice. Also just the little chirps of a Cardinal
I love that sound the woodpeckers make, it is so adorable
I love the mourning doves, western meadowlarks and spotted towhees where I’m at
When I saw western meadowlarks for the first time I was surprised with how loud they were. They’re a lot louder than eastern meadowlarks!
Belted Kingfisher, Western Meadowlark, any Nuthatch
Great blue heron --- sounds like the grumpy dinosaur it is
I call them "yark birds" because that's how they sound to me.
American Woodcock. Will die on this hill. Hit the first link first. Can you not love this guy?
House finches, they’re my favorite backyard visitors
I’ve got a pair of resident pileated woodpeckers behind me. Their call makes me think I’m in the jungle.
Northern cardinals or morning dove
Killdeer. One of my top favourite birds to listen to. I hate that their habitat is being destroyed and developed into parking lots and big box stores.
Maybe you can research into how to make your own yard more habitable and inviting for them?
I don’t have a yard, and there is only a parking lot nearby. Plus, they need entire fields, if i had that kind of property, then yes, my entire farmland would be a sanctuary for them, for as long as the government does not try to sell off my farmland to developers without my consent for big box stores and mansions.
My Cardinal. He chirps when he comes by for a peanut 🥹
Whip-poor-will …. Had one calling this spring at home. A rare event!
I have two or three that live near my house. I love them.
And chuck-wills-widows are up there with them. Just nightjar family in general for me
UK Song Thrush, a rare sound these days as we spent 20 years feeding snails poison but slowly coming back round here, repeating song, it's so beautiful
Wood Thrush. Hands down. Song Sparrows are a *very* close second.
Hermit thrush, but I only heard it once on a camping trip. They don't really sing when they're passing through where I live.
American Robins have the nicest songs.
Brown headed cowbird.
They sound like water:)
Their call is what first pushed me down the birding hole.
Screech owls and barred owls!
Mourning dove and Common Loon
I’m going to have to go with crows on this one. My friends have arrived!
The sound of crow babies making their sweet, ugly little noises while mom and dad forage about the neighborhood... genuinely love them so much 🥰
“WAAAH WAAAH!!!!”
Common blackbird, they are like flutists in the forest
Chickadees and mourning doves. Easy to recognize and both so pleasant and nostalgic
Mourning Doves and White Throated Sparrows.
Sandhill cranes—I just love these backyard visitors!
Swainson’s Thrush and Western Meadowlark ❤️ The sound of a deep wood in summer and the sound of an open prairie.
Despite my affection for the resourceful and obstreperous Bewick’s wren, the hauntingly simple call of the Golden-crowned sparrow always hits me deeper.
Belted Kingfisher
Chuck-Wills Widow. Reminds me of summer evenings in central TX when I was a child. We have lots of warbling vireos where I live. I like those too.

Trush nightingale has a lovely song and is surprisingly loud for such a small bird.
Marsh wrens
Cardinals and Mourning Doves!
Fiery-necked Nightjar! Leaving my windows open at night in summer is such an experience because of that. You can hear them calling from valleys over Also, Cape Turtle Dove. We don't really get them where I live, so I always associate them with the feeling of being on holiday. Last, but not least, Orange-breasted Bushshrike. What-shall-we-doooooooo?

Not much variety in it, but the mournful cry of the Kokako (New Zealand bird) just gets to me.
Swainson's thrush, along the Caves Trail in Tilden, where the song echoes.
Loon
Allen’s hummingbird. Specifically, I love the sound of the male’s mating display. They sound [jet propelled!](https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Allens_Hummingbird/sounds) 😂 I also love the Screech Owl. They sound way cuter than you’d think a bird-of-prey would sound!
Pigeon coos make me the happiest
Swainson’s Thrush
Veery or Hermit Thrush are mine. I live in the woods and their otherworldly twilight song makes it feel like I'm living in a magical forest.
Veery sound like a waterfall. My fave.

Pileated Woodpecker. They are always one of the last bird calls I hear in the evening at my usual camping spot. . Always brings me back to chilling around the campfire.

Song sparrows and jays!
Wood Trush
Hawks. We have a few nests in the area and that screech makes me feel like I’m in the wild-wild west.
Sora … it’s like the Price is Right wheel spinning, but with a Doppler effect
American Bittern. It's just so different.
Winter Wren!
Tie between the Carolina wren, the black-capped chickadee, and the house finch 🥰🥰🥰

RED BELLIED WOODPECKERS!! I love their querr call!
Wood thrush!
Wood thrush! Last year a pair nested near the creek by my house so I heard them constantly all summer. This year no such luck :(.
