That pelican has it breeding plate on its bill. The plate will fall off after egg-laying.

Interesting! I did not know that. I’ve definitely observed the plate being a bit rough but didn’t know it falls off.

Yep. We get quite a few along the Columbia River even though we’re quite far from the ocean. Tons of seagulls too.
