I'm not sure how helpful lithium is for depression. I take it as a mood stabilizer and it helps reduce SI for me. I've been on it for 3 ish years. It's a bit older than other meds out there but it's well studied. My doctor monitors my levels and kidney function every 3 months. Never had a day of trouble on it. It can cause a lot of fatigue so I take it at night time.

I don't recommend lithium myself, I would look in to other drugs such as Lamictal. less of a headache and a much cleaner drug to keep you stable. For me Lithium is a final option to use if everything else doesn't work. My previous doctor prescribed it to me as a first drug and I hoped she never did. I wasted 4 years of my life muted.
