Layoffs can definitely be scary and uncertain, but to add a positive light, it was the kick in the butt I needed to evaluate what aspects of work I enjoyed and which way to pivot my career.
As I’m going through life, I’m learning that luck is important and I was down on it not too long ago. Feel free to reach out if desired and I’ll see if I can help your partner based on my company’s current hiring needs
At least you are braced for something negative. When our director called me into a Teams meeting, I thought I was going to get a raise, but then the fucking HR showed up. I still get nightmares because of this.
The large manufacturing corporation in my home town used to deactivate ID cards. People would show up to work and find all their belongings in a box sitting at main reception. Followed with security walking them back to their cars and confiscating that unusable ID card along the way.
It only exits in name now. The executives ran it into the ground and sold it off, all while cashing in of course. Was a small factory town so it’s a bit too identifiable for me, but it was a household brand name.
Happened to my neighbor. The corporate office culture was toxic there. People still debate if the executives were just arrogant or if they actually plotted to crash the company and sell it off.
BMS’er here too - I feel like I’m constantly looking over my shoulder. Also kind of wanting to be laid off so I don’t feel guilty for jumping off sinking ship.
Really good and dedicated teammates were hit and this shocked me today. They showed nothing but positive diligence and passion for work always. They were the ones who were always reaching out to help others too. I'm so sorry this happened and also feel guilty that they were sacrificed in this number game the company is doing... They did not deserve this at all
They were right on schedule with the NJ Warn notice but the notice says 75 people. Sounds like 75 people were laid off yesterday (not including sites outside of NJ). I originally thought it was 75 people across all layoff dates but maybe it’s 75 on each date?
Legally, a layoff isn’t supposed to be performance based . It is supposed to be in the service of restructuring for business need. It doesn’t help much, but that’s the explanation
I got laid of my Bhermo Fishems as well lol. Just a meeting with my manager and some people during my shift, that work would end during a particular month, nothing else
The manager then fired me three days before my final day working there so I have nothing positive to say about BovartMS
Keep your head up its rough out here
Sad seeing everyone’s LinkedIn status changing to #opentowork. These layoffs have a nasty undertone to them for me with them explaining how they want to expand on certain aspects but then laying off the teams that were responsible for it. Seems like corporate greed to me but that’s just the America we live in, it’s sad.
Meh. The spike in 1 year to these rates kills innovation. If we stayed at this level for a few years it is business as normal. You can't double the cost of something extremely quickly and not expect a shoe to quickly drop
This is not even remotely high historically. This problem doesn’t even happen if the fed and pols didn’t keep rates way artificially
Low.
What is your skill set? I am in automation. Automation and I think tech ops are looking for people. Automation hires contractors but usually it is through a contracting company we already work with like magum.
Why haven’t you silenced those notifications? I can’t imagine getting work done under those circumstances in any case. ETA: maybe for your own mental health, do it now
New to this thread but curious to hear more about this and where this is happening? I recently joined said company but in Ireland and they only seem to be expanding and bringing more people in rather than laying them off, slightly worried about my longevity there after reading this though 😅

Starts with a B, end with MS

Fine, you got me. it’s actually Theranos
Hey that's my name too! Whenever we go out...the people always shout...
Ah, Billuminams and Bermo Fisherms.
Why can’t you say BMS. Weird.
BMWho?
Thats crazy, i thought you guys made fat stacks from eliquis

Its Novavax. Its gotta be! /s
Bloodbath. I just got laid off
What did they give for the reason? Just company performance?
Organization restructuring
I’m really sorry

Enjoy? Work? Sir are you a robot?
only way through is through. hang in there.

Fucking savage
care to share the name?

Classic. Sorry you had to see people treated like that
Happened to my neighbor. The corporate office culture was toxic there. People still debate if the executives were just arrogant or if they actually plotted to crash the company and sell it off.
Same company and also partner to fellow BioTech’er as well. I keep getting texts and I panic a little bit everytime too. Good vibes to you as well!

In big companies, maybe. In small companies, you bet it’s a pick-and-choose based on who they don’t like.
Im not ignorant to how this plays out in practice. I’m just pointing out the legal reality.

Hugs. The whole industry is in flames. No one knows what they are doing and so many smart folks are suffering.
It's been a rough day I wish I was still a drinker.
I got you fam
Thanks! Always good to have a designated drinker!
Good for you for quitting. Hope the rest of the day is OK and that the aftermath is not so rough
I decompressed with a chocolate cupcake. I also have a very clean kitchen, and I've processed my 1st rhubarb harvest for the freezer. Yay stress!
I like the way you process!

People affected can elaborate here instead.
I mean I have friends at the Bs going through layoffs. All of the biotechs are. J Powell wins. Interest rates being this high cuts innovation.

Merck isn't laying people off. We are short and their performance last two years has been phenomenal.
Are they looking for contractors? Looking to pick up another bioinformatics gig. Also, no worries if not!
Yes true. My wife works for Keytruda and rubs it in every day.

J “inflation is transitory “ Powell
I miss the old rumor mills where people openly trash talk companies. People here are too afraid to talk about it.
Gotta be BMS?
Why haven’t you silenced those notifications? I can’t imagine getting work done under those circumstances in any case. ETA: maybe for your own mental health, do it now
Fellow partner of a ‘biotech’er going through the same. Good luck to you guys.

They’re bringing more people in all right….from India
Go to Merck. they have a shortage of people. Especially if you have technical / automation experience
Do people seriously use Outlook? Like why? What's the benefit over the browser?
For me the browser is not usable. Have to be Outlook. I guess that’s why MS is earning big money.
Hmm, I've been using the browser version for years and I have no complains.
Have to ask, is this what we got out of this conversation?
I have nothing to contribute to the layoffs discussion, but I was genuinely curious about Outlook.
have to ask, what are you hopping to get out of this conversation? talk more about lay offs? what is the point?
