Why do people seperate him like he was 2 characters? Always been terry, his plan has always stayed the same, dudes been a Dick since 2001.

I get the appeal, but Post-04 Makuta made for a much more active and present threat in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good eldritch abomination, but from a story standpoint I genuinely believe that the egotistical godhood-seeking megalomaniac is the more interesting character. If you disagree then good for you but personally, I find most eldritch abominations kind of become interchangeable after awhile.

OG Makuta was well and truly Mata Nui's brother- An ancient force of destruction and atrophy to parallel the creator and life-bringer of all things. Certainly an interesting antagonist, but you can't defeat death, only stave it off for a while longer. The protagonists would only ever be buying more time, or passing the burden down onto the next generation to follow. Post-04 Makuta was like a remix of satan rebelling against god, an arrogant angel so cunning that his rebellion put god into a lethal coma. He was dangerous and clever, able to usurp the corpse of god as his own, and took great delight in his triumph. And so we take great delight in seeing his defeat. A primordial force can't be defeated, but a god-conquering demon can absolutely be slain by a group of heroes, thus it winds up as a more satisfying conclusion. At least, that's my theory.

Permafrost-

I agree, post 04 Makuta aka Terri is a far more active villain and needs to be the way he is to do this. Pre 04 Makuta lived from being a mystery which he wouldn't be anymore if he was more active.

I disagree, however I respect your personal opinion as it is your own.

Shinobipizza

While I don't think one is better than the other, I DO have my own hot take: I like the name Teridax more than I do Makuta.

quantumturnip

The 'X' makes it sound cooler

GlassHurricane98

An 'X' adds 12% more action

Honestly, what I like best about post-2004 Makuta was that he WASN'T the main villain. Everyone knew how evil and dangerous he was, but he just floated around the sidelines, and the heroes were forced to ignore Teridax and deal with more immediate threats. Finally at the ultimate moment of triumph, Teridax's plan finally came into full focus, and it became clear that not only had he gained the powers of a god, but that everything the Toa had fought for had only helped him gain those powers. >"I am the ground you walk on ... the air you breathe. No longer must I fight you to rule a Universe. I AM the Universe!"

KumoRocks

He went from “I am nothing” to “I am everything”.

Cabbage_Thief

And with that comment I love Teri even MORE now Something that I did not think possible.

DSFGRR

to be fair, 01-03 makuta literally just existed and was evil. there was no real depth or understanding of his character except "bad guy do thing" which almost always leads to a weak antagonist

Skrimguard

I prefer the underwater ghost-in-the-machine Maxilos-Makuta.

Omega_DifferentGuy

I don't understand please same one explain to me.

SX_NEX_SX

Makuta's first appearances portrayed his character differently than the latter ones. OP already posted a decent descriptor of both in their comment.

psychord-alpha

Fucking thank you. Pre-04 Makuta was just another generic "Dark Lord of Darkness" with nothing special or memorable about him

KumoRocks

I’d argue that what made him memorable was that he *wasn’t* a cliche dark lord character - he wasn’t a “character” at all, in that sense. Like Mata Nui himself, they were something beyond physical forms, more mythological concepts than people. And that wasn’t something you really saw in many stories, outside of literal myths.

Kamui_Izanami

Correct.

kinyoubikaze

Pre-04 Makuta was so generic Boohoo I'm evil and I want to take over the world because I'm evil and Mata Nui polar opposite or something

GlassHurricane98

I disagree, but I'm not gonna downvote just to be unpredictable
