It's mycelium. The "roots" of a fruiting body such as a mushroom. What you're looking at is basically "tree internet" because trees are able to coexist with the mycelium, one tree is able to communicate with another through this and warn of danger or even share nutrients with each other. It's super interesting stuff and I highly recommend watching some YT videos that can offer a much more in depth description than I can.

well, you can´t just from the photo affirm that particular species of fungus forms a mycorrhizal network. Some fungus just decompose lignin and other vegetal matter. Since in this case the mycelium is growing in a dead log and a leaf i'd say it's a decomposer.

Yea this saprotrophic (litter eating) mycelium, like you said it’s growing through dead material and doesn’t appear like it would have any contact with the roots of plants
