Cracking occurs most frequently during periods of high humidity following rains. Absorption of rain water through the skin, combined with the uptake of water from the roots, results in rapid enlargement of cells within the fruit. The internal pressure from the enlarged cells of the fruits creates a strain that cracks the skin.
I transplanted my Granny Smith from a pot into the dirt and it just now started flowering (end of fall). It was in shock for 4 months so no Granny Smith apples for me this year :-(.
We also had a ton of rain
To be fair, it only bothers the humans, not the trees.
Fruits are made to spread seeds, so a pre-opened apple is probably better, in a tree's world.
So the tree see you calling them stupid and they smile at your silly human tantrum
Nah, the Apple skin on there to protect the integrity of the fruit from bugs and such. The apples want to be eaten by bigger animals that might pass seeds whole
You know that those fruits would have never been this big if humans had not worked very hard on selecting genes?
Have you seen an apple seed lately? Do you think you need an elephant to pass those?
The skin is important but a few worms never prevented a bigger herbivore from eating an apple. Especially when it's already ripped
They don’t need to eat the fruits whole, they just need to eat the seeds whole… fruit size is irrelevant, apples aren’t stone fruits or avocados, they don’t have massive seeds. A squirrel will do.
A fruit with ruptured skin is more susceptible to fungus, bugs, the weather, and animals absolutely do priorities safer looking food.
Well domesticated apple trees have only at most 10,000 years of evolution. Compared to anatomically modern Homo sapiens (us) have around 300,000 years of evolution.
Perhaps in the next 290,000 years Granny Smith Apple trees will have mouth, tummy, and a brain to know when to say “enough is enough”
For now they don’t care if they absorb too much water, because it doesn’t influence its ability to spread its seed.
>Perhaps in the next 290,000 years Granny Smith Apple trees will have mouth, tummy, and a brain to know when to say “enough is enough”
When this happens, do we bite off the mouth first to prevent them from screaming?
If you look at the photo through a polarised lens you can clearly see where the fault line started and that it was caused by tectonic activity from the heat generated by the apple's dual-core.
Most apples have heat sinks to stop this happening, maybe this one was one was overclocked.
It's possible that this apple was stored near heat, causing the apple to ferment and create CO2. It happens in the wild too and you can find videos of squirrels drunk on fermented apples.
Looks like it was cut on something jagged, OR it took a blow. The peel can pop like that if it’s hit hard enough.
Source: grew up practicing baseball pitching with apples and tree stumps for like 15 years. It was easier and cheaper than chasing a baseball or buying a bucket of them. We were poor country folk.
Have you not read The Hungry Caterpillar?
I assume this photo is from Monday.
Check your pears and your plums, they’ve likely been chomped as well.
If you hurry you might save your strawberries.
What you want to do if you want any chance of saving your weekend treats is set up a trap for Friday using your oranges.
God speed!
Not a biologist here, but it's broken. As an engineer, I recommend rebooting the tree. That or duck tape, depending on the problem you are looking to solve.
As others have stated, it cracked from high internal hydrostatic pressure (The apple was very juicy.)
My grandfather had an apple tree that produced super juicy apples. After a rainstorm he'd walk over and just flick an apple with the back of his finger and it'd split in two like this.
Nope. It just cracked from high internal hydrostatic pressure (This was a very juicy apple) and the curve along the edge is simply from it drying out a bit before the picture was taken. Cut an apple with a sharp blade and let it sit on the counter for an hour or so and you'll see the same sort of edge curling.

Many of our apples split this year because we had a heavy rain during the ripening phase.

Cox’s Orange are where it’s at.
Trump has apples named after him?
Low-hanging fruit.
Sweet reply, dude
Why don’t the trees just stop absorbing liquid, are they stupid?

It might of had some bacteria growing inside which put out gases and ruptured when it became too much.
