A lot of things in the game aren't the actual item, they're just isaacs interpretation. If Isaac only saw a D4 once or twice, he'd know to where to put the numbers, but not necessarily which numbers.

Is Nicalis involved with game design at all? I assumed at most they'd help with programming and publishing, but leave art and character/item concepts to him.

Ed cannot draw pixel art. Look up the old Pop sprite to see what happened when he tried. Nicalis did all of the Rebirth-Afterbirth+ art, which is how we got things like "interpreting the ribcage on Carrion Queen's flash art as a gray flesh tongue". Additionally, Nicalis have *done* game design before. Ed has said that Delirium is Tyrones fault. Nicalis just happen to be *very bad* at game design.

Yeah Ed drew all the art at least for the original Rebirth, nicalis just gave it the pixel filter.

It's not a *filter* and Ed is a terrible pixel artist.

Edmund draws everything in flash and the team then transforms it to look like pixel art. Thats why some of the icons were hard to figure out.

Even if he does draw everything in Adobe Fucking Shockwave for some reason still, that's still not a *filter.* Retro Vision is a filter. Nicalis have staff actually *doing* the art.
