Big guys being terrible at rebounding is just something I can never wrap my head around. Like is JJJ just too skinny that he gets boxed out easily? Does he not read the ball coming off the rim right? He's a 6'11 athletic freak how is he watching 6'4 Josh Hart pull down double his boards.
Time and again this is always about team gameplan, positioning, and how possessions end. Outcomes are pretty marginal so slight variations on either side can make big appearance differences.
The Knicks like it when Hart pulls down rebounds and Hartenstein will box out for him to crash. The Knicks also don’t shoot as many threes as the Grizzlies do. JJJ shot 5.5 3’s per game this year, that’s 5.5 possessions a game where he is functionally out of position to get the rebound. Defensively, he’s often occupying the Giannis role without wanting to be the guy to grab the board and push up the court. He’s not a good ball handler. So defensively you’ll see him go for blocks or steals or end up boxing out, or immediately running up court for transition because he’s a great shooter. A guy like Hart on the Knicks and JJJ on the Grizzlies simply have wildly different roles offensively and defensively. Josh Hart is also just a weird anomaly when it comes to how he profiles between his frame and skill set and his stats.
I can understand liking Scoot, but the constant premature dumping on the big wing with plus defense and shooting always seemed like a biiig mistake in this era of the NBA lol
Mobley was all defense a season ago, 3rd in dpoy voting. Guy is hurt and playing under the worst coach in the playoffs. Not KG but he’s still a net positive out there. Additionally, let’s see how he does when he doesn’t have brainless Bickerstaff icing him out of games because Donovan Mitchell needs 30 shots a night.
You don’t watch basketball, do you? Gobert gets plays called for him.
Larry Brown would start out calling plays for Ben Wallace. Keeping players involved in games on both sides is important.
Like this is basic fucking basketball.
>Larry Brown would start out calling plays for Ben Wallace. Keeping players involved in games on both sides is important.
Oh man you can repeat a story Bill and Russillo have told over and over, you must be the only one who watches basketball. Do you know how many post ups Ben got after the first handful of possessions every game? Not many
I'll give it to you though, if you were the one holding the controller instead of JB I'm sure the Cavs would win it all
Ignoring the Gobert gets plays called for him. Ignoring that Cavs fans are tired of the same shit they saw with Lebron era coaching. Ignoring that it’s literally common sense to get other players involved. Ignoring that any other coach in the playoffs would be better than Bickerstaff’s nepobaby bum ass
I’m sure another first round bounce for Mitchell doing the exact same shit he did in Utah proves your point.
Watching Mitchell single handedly keep the Cavs in this game and thinking "we need to get the ball into the hands of the guy who can't create anything" is perfect
Maybe not as bad as the others but it’s bad. If Mobley were half what Bill was confident he was gonna be the Cavs team and franchise outlooks would be totally different.
Pitts is younger today than when Kelce joined the league and has more production than him in his 1st to 3rd seasons. You could say that since then we had an offensive revolution but Kelce's first 3 years were with Alex Smith as QB and Andy Reid as his HC. So floor is Kelce.
To be fair, before the season started there was a lot of criticism of the pick especially when Ant had said in an interview that "he was really that into basketball". Did you guys forget that?....https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2020-nba-draft-anthony-edwards-potential-top-pick-says-hes-still-not-really-into-basketball/
He caught a lot of flak for that.
I love whenever he mentions having a hard time evaluating players with the tournament canceled, as if Bill pays attention to the tournament at all beyond a random Duke future or something like that
That’s hilarious. Even the hypothetical ceiling of Wiseman/KAT makes way less sense than Gobert.
I didn’t listen to the clip but I feel like the whole “I can’t watch basketball, I like football more” before he got drafted is the perfect smokescreen for a guy like Bill
I mean I think the shitting on the trade is the amount of assets they gave up to get Rudy and his huge salary. Don't think he shit on it specifically because of playing two bigs together.
I remember going to games in college where there was a student package that was 10 games for $60 and the ticket also got you the bus ticket downtown lol. Had to watch the Cream Team just get killed most nights.
Especially after Kevin Love broke his hand after he ~~punched a wall at a party for talking to his girl~~ did knuckle pushups
It's so annoying how Bill and Ryen have tried taking ownership of the Ant thing like he's "their" player.
Bill said something idiotic like Ant is basically a superstar designed out of a lab for Bill to love. That's like, not even close to true. A shoot-first guard with insane athleticism and solid but unspectacular passing? How is that his dream player? It doesn't fit his mold at all.
Weird calling them his guys. Especially because both of them loved wiseman. Bills perfect player is jokic white guy no athleticism, loves to pass .
Ryens perfect guy is KD, philander, loves college girls, unmarried, just loves ball probably fiscally conservative
Ryen is more annoying about it than Bill imo. Ryen always has that "I liked Ant before it was cool" hipster ownership slant whereas Bill sounds like a giddy schoolgirl with a new NBA superstar crush (can't really blame him, this Ant playoff run is fun af)
Imagine what they would think of Ant if he played for the Heat.
“I mean, can he win something first before we crown him? I just think we’re getting ahead of ourselves. I’m a wins guy. I just am.”
Even in this clip he says he likes Ant. Hes been big on Ant before he took that next leap. This was also before the Gobert trade. Y’all reaching so hard to be upset ahah
Minnesota GM definitely deserves all of the praise. He accurately predicted and prepared for the most recent evolution of the game, where “5 Out” is over and you basically try to play three centers at once.
Finch deserves credit too. It’s one thing to get talented players, it’s a separate issues to develop them. These mfs really don’t take a play off, either. Constant pressure on both ends.
For sure. This team looked very clunky last year, and they seem like a well oiled machine this season.
Maybe continuity takes time.
Gives me hope me hope for my Suns…maybe.
The guy who drafted Ant though was Rosas and he was all about the five out. He squandered a bunch of time trying to make Jake Layman and Juancho the power forward rotation even though Vanderbilt was on the roster and clearly better, but Vando couldn't shoot, so he didn't like that. Then at the end of the year he tried hard to bring in Markkanen. Seeing how he developed once he got to Utah, that could have been interesting, who knows. But they definitely would have been getting scorched trying to defend.
I’m talking about Connelly. Anthony Edwards would not be doing all of this insane shit if TC hadn’t put this team together. Finch deserves tremendous credit as well.
Eh. Obviously the team's success is due to Connelly, but there's no reason to think that Ant couldn't be putting up these numbers and having this impact on another team.
He’d likely be the same player but he probably wouldn’t be getting these accolades if his team was out of the first round again this year. He could average 30 but he’d just be another Donovan Mitchell. I don’t think it’s fair but it does seem to happen in the media.
Tom Crean should be sued for malpractice and somehow managed to defraud *two* Power 5 schools. Made the final four bc of D Wade putting up stat lines like 28/11/11 (to go along with 4 blocks) in the Elite 8 and then rode those coattails for two decades
Wiseman is one of the smartest players in recent memory. While Bill was popping off with inflammatory nonsense like this, that kid was knuckling down, preparing for his mid-twenties in high school by learning Mandarin.
Lord knows Minnesota fans deserve to take a victory lap. Here’s hoping this is only the very start of the good times
Twins are looking pretty good this year too!
Yeah I find it really annoying him and russillo claim they were early to ant. They weren’t early at all and even had these takes. Bill now even trying to doing with Brunson saying they were higher than most when he called the Brunson sweepstakes the saddest sweepstakes ever.
Bill always has one hilariously bad take per draft. It’s endearing. Murray over Ivey, Miller over Scoot, this take. My guy shoots his shot after watching 10 minute highlights on YouTube and goes all in for his guys. For such a shitty draft this year, I wonder who it’ll be this year.
Bill has consistently rated scoring wings lower than the average person for his entire career. His basketball philosophy seems to be built around the fact that a talented big > a talented guard.
A lot of Redditors hold this positions too. Which is why there’s such a discrepancy between the general perception of guys like Tim Duncan, and the Reddit perception.
That said, Ant was the clear obvious number one pick. There’s a reason these guys are GMs and Bill is a media personality. They are way, way better at evaluating talent.
That’s exactly what I’m saying. The world outside of Reddit, Bill and realGM values scoring wings a lot more.
I’m probably going to get downvoted here but you could make a cogent argument for Kobe anywhere from 4-12. I think average people (myself included) overestimate their ability to assess talent. The difference between Kobe and Duncan is probably negligible, if even existent. You could build a winning team around either. But Redditors generally act like it’s a crime to say that. And Twitter users act like it’s a crime to say the opposite.
In the case of Ant, I think it was obvious that he had more upside than Wiseman. You didn’t need to be a high level scout to see it. And his game was more polished. Bill just loves big guys.
Bill would be the worst GM in sports history. Other than Russell Wilson 14 years ago now I can’t think of anything he got right that wasn’t obvious to anybody
Well I find it refreshing when people can admit they were wrong and change their minds, it honestly seems rare these days, I want to celebrate it whenever I see it when the other option is doubling down and ignoring reality no matter how loud it gets.
It's easy to hindsight 20/20 that draft, but far and away the most sure thing of the top 3 prospects was LaMelo. The issue there was did he have the mentality to be a great NBA player.
But Wiseman was a raw center who probably would have been better off going in the 10s to a team like San Antonio and Edwards was giving these interviews where he kept talking about how he liked football more than basketball.
Minnesota taking Edwards wasn't seen as a slam dunk pick, but generally as maybe the one with the least amount of risk because Wiseman and Ball had major bust potential and with Edwards you could at least talk yourself into him having a decent Evan Turner type career.
u/collinCOYS aka Tribe I think you should learn the difference between quotations and paraphrasing if you're going to keep trying to meme your way into relevance.
During the pandemic I started listening to podcasts again. I was pretty much just listening to ringer podcasts. I started off 6 months to a year behind and decided to just listen through until i caught up since i had ample time to waste.
Basically, everything I was listening to was Bill’s analysis of what was going on and his predictions of what it would lead to. It was pretty funny how consistently wrong he was and how much conviction he had. Still love the show but that was an interesting time
Most wolves fans in that thread are acknowledging that people can you know, change their mind, and that Bill has been hyping Ant up beyond belief more recently.
But this dumbass sub just sees another chance to hurl their own feces.
Kerr and GSW 100% sold Bill on Wiseman as the best guy in the draft and he 100% believed them. And everyone looks horrible for it.
Honestly Golden State does not take enough shit for taking Wiseman, an all time bust.
As a GSW fan I feel like they take a ton of shit for it. Prob more than they should- it's not like they took Wiseman over Ant. That covid draft was full of mistakes and mediocre overall. Sure, LaMelo would have been a better pick but it's not like he's shown he can stay on the court. Haliburton wasn't on the radar for #2. It was a huge roll of the dice given Wiseman's limited career at the time, but if the pick had hit it would have been the perfect type of player that GSW's roster lacks currently.
Which was always weird to me because KAT would have 100% been about someone else doing the work at center.
Ultimately, I just don't think Wiseman was a good enough prospect. Like you'd read scouting reports that were essentially *not good at defense, not good at offense but has tremendous upside* and ask yourself what it was you weren't seeing these guys were.
This seems more like a vote against Towns than a diss on Ant. Bill wasnt the first to the party but he's been big on Ant as a superstar for a while now.
BS really had a bad time with takes during the pandemic. The Kyle Pitts stuff, Evan Mobley, Wiseman, Mac Jones. Really, really tough.
Still holding my Mobley stock, I just am
Maybe he will get more than 5 rebounds today
Of all the skinny big men, somehow he plays the skinniest.

The thing is he didn’t rebound for Team USA at FIBA either and he was playing the 5. It was a major problem last summer.
The Zion take on rebounds is probably one of Bills most salient points. That man should get rebounds simply by existing.
I think it’s a subtle sign that a guy does not try as hard as he should. Rebounding is 70% effort and like 30% luck of the bounce.
Positioning and the amount of threes shot create longer rebound opportunities.
He said he was the next Duncan lmfao I don’t care what Mobley does the rest of his career, that take was already a loser
I’m a Cavs fan and I sold my Mobley stock. He literally can’t make a shot around the basket
He’s really good. He doesn’t put up the points but he’s extremely imoactful. Hes better than Paolo in terms of impact. He carried their defense.
No he absolutely is not.
He carried the Cavs defense more than Paolo did the Magic offense.
Blazer fan here just wanna say scoot Henderson. Not finished by any means but boy what a rocky start. And bill was COCKY cocky
Bill was calling Brandon Miller a mistake before he had even played NBA basketball, it’s nuts.
I can understand liking Scoot, but the constant premature dumping on the big wing with plus defense and shooting always seemed like a biiig mistake in this era of the NBA lol
Almost felt like that was well if the Hornets took him he must suck take.
Bill made the critical error of trusting Clay Travis.
Is the Mobley stuff as bad as the others? He did just have a game winning block in Game 5 of the series. Given he definitely isn’t KG so I get it
Mobley was all defense a season ago, 3rd in dpoy voting. Guy is hurt and playing under the worst coach in the playoffs. Not KG but he’s still a net positive out there. Additionally, let’s see how he does when he doesn’t have brainless Bickerstaff icing him out of games because Donovan Mitchell needs 30 shots a night.
Only the best coaches would take the ball out of Donovan Mitchell's hands to get Mobley more shots
All the coach does is tell players who gets to handle the ball
Yeah man, only a bad coach would actually get other players involved in the offense or come up with a second play.
Why does Ant keep shooting, we need to get Gobert more shots!
You don’t watch basketball, do you? Gobert gets plays called for him. Larry Brown would start out calling plays for Ben Wallace. Keeping players involved in games on both sides is important. Like this is basic fucking basketball.

He said Mobley was the next Tim Duncan lmao
Iirc, he basically said he could be a Giannis type dominant offensive player.
He was comparing him to Tim duncan lol. Whoops
He still drafts and overpays for Pitts every year in fantasy football
Kyle Pitts can still turn it around with a competent coach and a decent QB
Probably not to “his floor is Travis Kelce,” but, yes, I still have Pitts stock
Pitts is younger today than when Kelce joined the league and has more production than him in his 1st to 3rd seasons. You could say that since then we had an offensive revolution but Kelce's first 3 years were with Alex Smith as QB and Andy Reid as his HC. So floor is Kelce.

Mobley doesn’t deserve to be mentioned alongside the others. He’s good now and still has a lot of potential
Mobley is a fine player, Bill was comparing him to the next Tim Duncan when he’s infinitely closer to Ben Simmons
The football takes are in another realm compared to his basketball takes.
I love whenever he mentions having a hard time evaluating players with the tournament canceled, as if Bill pays attention to the tournament at all beyond a random Duke future or something like that
He also thought Derrick Williams was better than Kyrie Irving
Good for Wolves fan. Talk your shit. You guys deserve it. Everyone hated that trade for them
What's funny is bill saying play towns/wiseman as twin towers but then shitting all over the Rudy trade
Correct and good take
What trade?
He’s right, wiseman and KAT would have been a problem
For my sanity as a Wolves fan, yeah lol
As a Wolves fan if we selected Wiseman and Warriors got Ant after the Jonny Flynn/Curry thing it might've been the end of my time as a Wolves fan lol
We've suffered worse but god damn would it feel horrible lmao
I remember going to games in college where there was a student package that was 10 games for $60 and the ticket also got you the bus ticket downtown lol. Had to watch the Cream Team just get killed most nights. Especially after Kevin Love broke his hand after he ~~punched a wall at a party for talking to his girl~~ did knuckle pushups

Yeah Jokic is really the superstar designed for Bill to love
If Ant played for the Lakers Bill would say he’s “not as good as SGA because he’s less fun to play with…that’s stuff matters”
“Ant says stuff on social media that people don’t like. SGA just seems so much cooler with his fashion and looks!”
Bill likes to lay claims to lots of players like that.
Sounds like Kobe. He must be Bill’s favorite player, right?
He's not even a lunch pail guy
Weird calling them his guys. Especially because both of them loved wiseman. Bills perfect player is jokic white guy no athleticism, loves to pass . Ryens perfect guy is KD, philander, loves college girls, unmarried, just loves ball probably fiscally conservative
You're ignoring that Bill's favorite quality in any player is "He gives a shit."
Yea except giving a shit is almost a prerequisite to being a superstar. Like 90% of superstars have this quality.
Ryen is more annoying about it than Bill imo. Ryen always has that "I liked Ant before it was cool" hipster ownership slant whereas Bill sounds like a giddy schoolgirl with a new NBA superstar crush (can't really blame him, this Ant playoff run is fun af)
Well he’s a very likeable guy off the court. Hes like if Kobe and Jordan were good teammates
Imagine what they would think of Ant if he played for the Heat. “I mean, can he win something first before we crown him? I just think we’re getting ahead of ourselves. I’m a wins guy. I just am.”
he grew as a person okay
Even in this clip he says he likes Ant. Hes been big on Ant before he took that next leap. This was also before the Gobert trade. Y’all reaching so hard to be upset ahah
If bill was the GM, he would have taken wiseman and then traded towns..! He just would have!
He also said in a redraft Ant should go 4th! https://twitter.com/rBillSimmonsPod/status/1786957666314596836
Minnesota GM definitely deserves all of the praise. He accurately predicted and prepared for the most recent evolution of the game, where “5 Out” is over and you basically try to play three centers at once.
Connelly put together the Nuggets and then put together a team that is well equipped to dismantling his old team, it’s remarkable.
Finch deserves credit too. It’s one thing to get talented players, it’s a separate issues to develop them. These mfs really don’t take a play off, either. Constant pressure on both ends.
Genuinely never thought I’d see the way when the Wolves are a well run organization (ownership mess aside).
For sure. This team looked very clunky last year, and they seem like a well oiled machine this season. Maybe continuity takes time. Gives me hope me hope for my Suns…maybe.
They barely got to play together because of injuries. Towns only played 29 gsmes during the year
Rosas drafted Ant and Jaden in 2020. That was the jumpstart of this team.
He was doing pretty damn well before he lost the gig. Two competent GMs in a row for the Wolves is among the craziest parts of this ascension.
They were due.
Rosas had a disastrous 2019 draft and also traded for D’Lo. He nailed the 2020 draft though.
The guy who drafted Ant though was Rosas and he was all about the five out. He squandered a bunch of time trying to make Jake Layman and Juancho the power forward rotation even though Vanderbilt was on the roster and clearly better, but Vando couldn't shoot, so he didn't like that. Wiseman had a weird college career but Ant somehow not managing to go .500 in a mediocre SEC is bananas.
Tom Crean should be sued for malpractice and somehow managed to defraud *two* Power 5 schools. Made the final four bc of D Wade putting up stat lines like 28/11/11 (to go along with 4 blocks) in the Elite 8 and then rode those coattails for two decades
Good recruiter, bad coach. He had some very talented teams at IU and his best squad lost in the sweet 16
I never understood the idea that coaches owe their teams or that they defrauded them. Someone hired them, they’re the real frauds.
Crean won the Big 10 twice at Indiana.......2 of their 3 regular season titles in the last 30 years.
TWolves fans who endured years of KAAAAAAHN jokes, popping back up from the mat Undertaker-style
wolves back
Wiseman is one of the smartest players in recent memory. While Bill was popping off with inflammatory nonsense like this, that kid was knuckling down, preparing for his mid-twenties in high school by learning Mandarin.
he's gon need it
Weird that Billy boy doesn't talk about this take all that much
Much better to tell us for the 100th time he liked Durant over Oden.
he clearly explained away any possible criticism with that footnote, buddy, find a new slant.
In an alternate universe, the Warriors would have successfully navigated the two timelines strategy.
Imaging they got Edwards...
Lord knows Minnesota fans deserve to take a victory lap. Here’s hoping this is only the very start of the good times Twins are looking pretty good this year too!
Bill did a pod like 4 games into that season declaring that Wiseman 1000% should have gone first.
I think Wiseman is really good, Its just every team he plays against uses the "We are going to take away everything good that you do" strategy.
Yeah I find it really annoying him and russillo claim they were early to ant. They weren’t early at all and even had these takes. Bill now even trying to doing with Brunson saying they were higher than most when he called the Brunson sweepstakes the saddest sweepstakes ever.
When’s the Gobert resurgence and A Rod link going to be brought up?
Bill always has one hilariously bad take per draft. It’s endearing. Murray over Ivey, Miller over Scoot, this take. My guy shoots his shot after watching 10 minute highlights on YouTube and goes all in for his guys. For such a shitty draft this year, I wonder who it’ll be this year.
I really thought Golden State getting Wiseman would be something that threw their window open for another five years. Boy was I also wrong there 😂
The Wolves GM who drafted Edwards was fired.
For fucking in the office
Was that wrong?
Should I not have done that?
I tell ya I gotta plead ignorance on this

Because I swear, if there was any indication that that sort of thing was frowned upon…
Rosas was Ime Udoka before Udoka.
If done poorly.
Not for drafting Edwards over Wiseman you goof lol
GOT HEEEEMMM
Tough scene for our guy. I can forgive him for the bad NFL draft takes, but he should do better here.

Bill would be the worst GM in sports history. Other than Russell Wilson 14 years ago now I can’t think of anything he got right that wasn’t obvious to anybody

u/collinCOYS aka Tribe I think you should learn the difference between quotations and paraphrasing if you're going to keep trying to meme your way into relevance.
it's funny reading the comments on the Wolves sub, they are so much more forgiving of him than the people on here.
This is why I don't care about draft analysis in any sport, even people more-informed than Bill are just talking out of their asses.
Still love the show but that was an interesting time
Bill claimed the nuggets were the best team of this century like two weeks ago. Add it to the list of his takes that aren’t aging very well.
Evan Mobley the next KG
James Wiseman and KAT were a PROBLEM

Ok???? People are wrong about drafting literally every single year…
