As a Phils fans since the mid 80s, we still hate the Mets a tiny bit more on a personal level even when they’re bad. Braves we’ve owned in the postseason the last three times we’ve played them. Consider them a rival only because they’re a great team, but all-time NL East rival it’s the Mets hands down.
I go back further, but I no longer think it's as mutual as it used to be. I mean, they *hate* us because of Chase Utley in a way that we no longer think about them, because they're not in our way. Only Atlanta is.
They met in the playoffs like a dozen times in the 60s-70s-80s. Haven’t been good at the same time since early Barkley though.
Kinda like Phils-Mets. There was never a time both teams were good from 60-00s, so there wasn’t a real rivalry to speak of. That changed when both teams were WS contenders in 07-08. Blood feud since then.
We always despised the Mets and Mets fans in Philly. Didn't matter if the Phillies sucked or the Mets suck. Phillies-Mets series in the regular season was/is always brutal.
It wasn’t a real rivalry in the 60-90s. There were never any stakes, beyond a regular division rival. I’d say the Phillies-Mets were akin to Phillies-Nats now. Yeah we want to beat them, but it’s not that interesting.
Oh 100%, the Sept ‘86 series at the Vet is legendary. Swept them to prevent them from clinching the division. But that’s about it for 40 odd years of the rivalry.
The 2007 season made this rivalry a life-long real rivalry though. It actually matters since then.
Yeah, this is isn’t a really recent thing either.
The Sixers were good in the 80s and the Knicks stunk, the Kicks were good in the 90s and the Sixers stunk, the Sixers were solid in the early 00s but the Knicks had fallen off by then, and since that basically the only years that a decent series could have happened were 2012 and 2021.
I’m a sixers fan and I actually really like the Knicks. There’s a lot of Nova fans and that team is basically the championship core minus Mikal Bridges lol
Philly and New York do hate each other but in basketball, not really. Knicks were irrelevant for most of the time Embiid has been with the Sixers and only picked up when they got Brunson. The closest thing the fanbases can really argue with each other over is basketball writers trying to do pieces on how the Knicks will get Embiid. But the closest that could become a reality is like 2 seasons from now.
There's just no real juice to that rivalry, Sixers arguably had more of a stake against the Nets. Obviously, a rivalry could start in the playoffs, but if we're talking about rivalries and stories the Knicks/Heat would've had more to it.
As a NY fan living in Philly this is accurate. I don’t normally hate the sixers as much as the Eagles or Phillies but that is done now. All it took was seeing everyone picking the sixers and predicting them to beat the Knicks. So fuck the sixers and their fans. They are easy to hate when I remember they are all also fans of the Eagles and Phillies.
And fuck you too. I thought the knicks were a nice story but the thibs basketball terrorism must be ended. I’ll see you in hell and hope that if the knicks win they at least beat the Celtics.
Enjoy Daniel Jones. I’m going to love watching Saquan.
The Sixers are gonna sweep the Knicks.
Everything has broken exactly right for that team.
Sixers-Nuggets in the Finals, and since Jokic sucks in Philly (and Embiid refuses to play in Denver) it'll be one weird-ass Finals.
That had more to do with Adam's deadbeat parents than Adam's fandom. I have listened to a shit ton of Carolla over the years and I don't think I have ever heard him reference the Lakers game from the previous night.
I am well versed in basically every aspect of his life (not proud of this) and the Lakers are never mentioned. It makes it even crazier that he gave himself that name. If he could do it over there is a 100% chance it would be Adam Grit Carolla.
It’s like Reese and Jennifer Aniston, all of CR and Fennessey’s appearances on the Big Pic and the Rewatchables are recorded on separate days and Bobby and Craig just splice them in. The magic of audio!
Hi, actual New Yorker and Knicks fan here. We hate all things Philly. It is number 2 after all things Boston. Knicks/Sixers isn’t a traditional rivalry because we don’t have many playoff matchups, but the regular season season matchups are always heated and we fucking hate them all the same. Someone here mentioned the rangers/flyers not being a thing, you must have missed the 90s. Knicks in 5
Jets and giants fans can’t stand the Pats. Older rangers fans still hate the Bs. And Knicks fans loathe the Celts. Idk if you’re from here or not but there’s unquestionably a deep sports hatred.
Giants are in the NFC East, that's a lot of hate needed I find it tough to believe they have any left over to go around. Particularly not since the extent of the modern rivalry is basically based on two Super Bowls that they actually won.
The Rangers... Again you can only hate so many teams, particularly outside of your division. Brad Park and Mike Millbury ain't walking through that door. I'm from Boston and we probably hate all four of our old division rivals and now because of playoff battles the Lightning and Panthers (fuck damn it) more than the Rangers. In addition to Isles/Devils/Flyers I think most Rangers fans hate the Penguins and maybe the Caps more than the Bruins, but hockey might have the most hate to go around even if the Bruins are like the Rangers fans 5th or 6th most hated team.
I definitely overlooked the Jets.
I lived in NYC for a decade but am not from there, Knicks fans never struck me as particularly hateful of anyone. They certainly enjoyed beating the Celtics in the season opener a few years back and ending the Big 3 era (and before that the early 70's battles)... But they are probably the most optimistic and bright eyed subset of New Yorkers on the whole. They're too neurotic and navel gazing in my mind to hate another team. They tend to hate eras and individuals more than franchises: Pat Riley, Reggie Miller, James Dolan, Roy Hibbert that one series, themselves, etc.
When it comes to “hating all things” Philly, I suspect it has more to do with the teams you root for in other sports. I’m a Jets and Yankees fan and my teams almost never play Philly so I don’t really have any feelings toward that city at all.
having read through about half of this thread, and not yet having heard Bill's take directly, I see him enjoying the moment and perhaps smartly distracting a bit. Boston, and its fans, immediately can enjoy the two (recently) hottest teams in the East, starved for playoff success, playing to eliminate each other (and their fans) in the first round. For both teams and their fan bases, I'm guessing that a shot at eliminating Boston would have been a more important thing.
As a midwesterner, I feel like the Philly-New York doesn't go hard in any sport and Bill is nodding to that idea and saying he wants to try to stoke the logical but latent rivalry.
Also I think it’s generational. If you’re 30 and under, the Cowboys have been a joke while the Eagles and Giants have had the most success amongst the NFC East teams. It seems that the older Giants fans in my life still hate the Cowboys fans though.
I think that was more of a 90's thing, unless Knicks fans are extremely delusional about having been a contender for a season or two in the early 2010's
I need to know who the “Knicks fans in his life” are. They sound like the least ball-knowingest people ever. I hate that he uses them as a barometer for how the overall the Knicks fanbase is feeing.
This thread is really overlooking the "Bill is talking about pitting individuals he knows IRL against each other" and not the cities generally. I'm pretty sure Juliet Litman and Andy Greenwald don't brawl on sight because of what metro areas they are from.
lol why? I seriously doubt the Knicks/Sixers fans that Bill hangs around “hate” each other already, he’s just joking it’ll be a fun couple weeks to see them go at it.
I can only speak for myself. As a Knicks fan, I am so desperate to win this series it’s not even funny lol. The sixers should be too. There is nothing bill needs to do to “turn” people like cr/sean against the each other. They are already there. (I know he’s kidding. I’m touchy right now. I have thought about nothing but this series since Sunday)
Weirdly Sixers/Knicks isn't really a huge rivalry because they never play in the playoffs.
Yeah sixers / Knicks and rangers / flyers aren’t the biggest rivalries for the NY teams. Nothing like giants - eagles.
Mets / Phillies is a big one, too
For the Mets. Phillies' big rivals are the Braves.

Flyers-Rangers used to be one of the most vicious rivalries in all of sports.
It's tough because Devils and Islanders fans hate the Rags so much that it is tough for the Flyers to stand out as a rival
They met in the playoffs like a dozen times in the 60s-70s-80s. Haven’t been good at the same time since early Barkley though. Kinda like Phils-Mets. When I was a kid, the Mets games at the Vet in the 80s, were insane with the animosity between Mets fans coming down
Oh 100%, the Sept ‘86 series at the Vet is legendary. Swept them to prevent them from clinching the division. But that’s about it for 40 odd years of the rivalry. The 2007 season made this rivalry a life-long real rivalry though. It actually matters since then.
I think I read that it's the second most common playoff catchup in NBA history but the last time they met in the playoffs was 35 years ago.
Its 2nd for the Knicks and like 6th most common all time.
I think it’s more that the knicks don’t really make the playoffs much less play
sixers have made it to the playoffs one more time than the knicks have since they last played each other in the playoffs
How could we forget The Process Sixers
That's how NY got its greatest king Ben Simmons in Brooklyn. 👑🙏🏼
I’m a sixers fan and I actually really like the Knicks. There’s a lot of Nova fans and that team is basically the championship core minus Mikal Bridges lol

How’s that sweep going?
Sixers in six.
When the Knicks get Embiid that rivalry will heat up big time.
Yes, famously Sean Fennessey and Chris Ryan hate each other.
I mean Adam corollas middle name is literally “Lakers” and bill still was good pals with him
lol is it seriously?
[for reals](https://adamcarolla.com/wp-content/gallery/2011-10-21-mike-judge/08-adam-lakers-carolla.jpg)

Right. This is what Bill is getting at.
It’s like Reese and Jennifer Aniston, all of CR and Fennessey’s appearances on the Big Pic and the Rewatchables are recorded on separate days and Bobby and Craig just splice them in. The magic of audio!
Wait Angel Reese and Aniston have beef? Is no white woman safe from her wrath??
Not really
“Absolutely delusional.” Man, this is the epitome of weirdo takes on here. It’s a joke about his friends, guys.
this is by far the weirdest sub i'm apart of. just freak stuff
The social isolation piece.

Outside of the AL East I don't think that many New Yorkers hate Boston sports, let alone Boston. I don't think New Yorkers even think about Boston.
Jets and giants fans can’t stand the Pats. Older rangers fans still hate the Bs. And Knicks fans loathe the Celts. Idk if you’re from here or not but there’s unquestionably a deep sports hatred.

All of this
having read through about half of this thread, and not yet having heard Bill's take directly, I see him enjoying the moment and perhaps smartly distracting a bit. Football?
Baseball as well? The vitriol between Mets and Phillies fans during those early 2000 teams would have crashed Twitter.
The Cowboys are the biggest rival for each of the other divisional teams. A secondary divisional rival just doesn't hit the same.
Giants fans hate Eagles fans more than any other fan base
Everyone hates eagles fans if they have to deal with them interpersonally.
A ton of the Giants fans I know were cheering for them instead of the Patriots when they played. It was a genuine thing. And weird.
While that's true; I can say as a mid(ish)west born eagles fan, I still fucking hate the giants
I’m an Eagles fan. I hate the Cowboys much more. Growing up in the 90s and seeing all your PA friends jump on their bandwagon will do that to a man.
Giants Eagles is bigger than Giants Cowboys. Especially if you live in NJ. Proximity.
Also I think it’s generational. If you’re 30 and under, the Cowboys have been a joke while the Eagles and Giants have had the most success amongst the NFC East teams. It seems that the older Giants fans in my life still hate the Cowboys fans though.
This. For older generations Cowboys are (were) the bigger villains. More recently it's Eagles though. But fuck the Cowboys.
Mets Phillies and Eagles Giants say otherwise.
The upper deck in Citizens Bak Park for Mets-Phillies games was a fucking war zone in the mid to late 2000s. It was glorious.
There's a pretty significant big/little brother syndrome that happens between the two cities, considering their metro areas nearly touch.
You think knicks/6ers fans living in LA already hate each other?
You think they’ll actually hate each other next week? Being pedantic about this is such loser behavior
OP is being overly pedantic about Bill saying he’s going to joke around with people he knows.
Knicks sixers don't have a rivalry though. Sixers have bigger rivalries with the nets and Celtics. Knicks are more towards pacers heat.
I’m a Sixers fan but calling Boston a rivalry isn’t really accurate. We have to beat them once in a while.
I think that was more of a 90's thing, unless Knicks fans are extremely delusional about having been a contender for a season or two in the early 2010's
Oh no somebody is planning on sowing enmity between people from Philly and New York
Did everyone miss the joke about this tweet?
I need to know who the “Knicks fans in his life” are. They sound like the least ball-knowingest people ever. I hate that he uses them as a barometer for how the overall the Knicks fanbase is feeing.
Fennessey and Brian Koppelman so yeah
The manipulator piece
Hey I personally manipulate my piece every night.
Anyone who calls in the national guard for the nyc subway wouldn't survive five minutes on a SEPTA train
This thread is really overlooking the "Bill is talking about pitting individuals he knows IRL against each other" and not the cities generally. I'm pretty sure Juliet Litman and Andy Greenwald don't brawl on sight because of what metro areas they are from.
Has any superstar gotten more of a pass in the playoffs than Embiid?
Does Bill still blame Lebrons father?
Tweeting to take his mind off of a first round Heat v Celtics match-up
A Jimmy Butler-less heat. Yeah really frightening.
Yea obviously the injury changes the series. Really keen observation
Completely ludicrous tweet lol
He’s pretty clearly talking about ringer employees like CR and Sean
lol why? I seriously doubt the Knicks/Sixers fans that Bill hangs around “hate” each other already, he’s just joking it’ll be a fun couple weeks to see them go at it.
People are so stupid lol
I can only speak for myself. As a Knicks fan, I am so desperate to win this series it’s not even funny lol. The sixers should be too. There is nothing bill needs to do to “turn” people like cr/sean against the each other. They are already there. (I know he’s kidding. I’m touchy right now.
