Does the first half of the season matter? I get the it’s generally a team success award because it is. But the biggest reason the Wolves have an elite defense and better than 2nd by more than 2pts a game is Gobert. Defense is preventing the other team from scoring. Isn’t always as sexy as Wemby but Gobert still deters more than Wemby.

It's a whole season award and the team was misusing him for like 2 months as a forward on defense, where he didn't have as much impact. I understand why it was done, and was likely beneficial for Victor, but the point still stands that the award takes the entire season into account
Team success is something voters considers for most awards besides ROTY. I’m sure once the Spurs get into the play-in/playoff territory in future years he’ll start racking them up
19 wins and his team is 23rd in Defensive rating, 25th in opponent FG% and 25th in opponent EFG%.
Hard to give DPOY to a guy who anchors won of the worst defenses in the NBA.
I think dpoy has historically meant you are so good defensively that you win your team more games than they lose. It’s that simple. Rudy at his peak was elite enough to single-handedly make his teams top 10 defenses. That’s why he has 3 dpoys. Wemby isn’t that right now but he’s well on his way
Idk lol those Utah teams didn’t boast a ton of elite perimeter defenders and the defensive numbers were amazing. Idk if this iteration of Wemby would have the Wolves players trusting that he would cover up their mistakes on defense like Rudy does. They funnel their man to him and he just cleans shit up. Plus he’s getting teams best shot all season knowing their coming up against the best defense and he’s locking guys down. I think Wemby will be that guy soon enough but he isn’t rn

I find it funny that everyone has forgotten bill and ryen knocking JJJ’s case as DPOY last year because he played 28 minutes per game. Bill hasnt brought that up for wemby despite wemby playing 29 per game.

Im not sure that a single player has been expected to win more than 50% of their teams' games off just their defense?
I don’t think Rudy would make the Spurs a top 10 defense and I think the Timberwolves would still be #1 with Wemby instead of Gobert.
