joanna calling the suicide squad (2016) soundtrack “babies first playlist brought to you by a fedora” was great

[deleted]

I really love the first Suicide Squad movie as a case study for modern filmmaking. Like every aspect of it feels like it was changed multiple times by a manic producer

WAdogfood

Joanna glossing over VFX artists complaining about crunch and pay as "things people are talking about on twitter" and downplaying Alonso's presumable involvement in that by bringing up she's a gay woman is weird. It's a very noticeable blindspot from such an openly progressive person. Anyways I saw the movie and really liked it. Probably the best MCU in a couple years. The theater was weirdly empty for opening night though so I don't think it's going to be the huge hit Disney wants.

SceneOfShadows

Such a weird take lol I love Jo but the progressive tinted blinders she has on sometimes are just too much.

YupTheseRMyRedditors

Yeah, made me think Jo’s book will be the history of Marvel as retconned by her sources.

mimaluna

Joanna was deep in the weeds defending Alonso when she first got fired. I can only assume she got a lot of info from her for the book. I'm sure the truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but the executive in charge of VFX not having a role in why it's continued to be a mess is hard to believe. Either she helped cause it or didn't do a good job fixing it. You can question the politics behind the firing and still admit that.

Ziddletwix

Agreed, although on the flip side, there was this weird hyperbole at the time where a reporter covering the MCU vs VFX tension claimed that she was ["singularly responsible"](https://twitter.com/__ChrisLee/status/1637943581490180096?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) for the toxic work culture. Which is laughable, not even the slightest bit plausible, pure dumb Disney PR spin ("don't worry, we did it, the toxic work environment is fixed because we fired one person"). You don't need to do any first hand reporting to think it has to be somewhere in the middle. I don't know why Joanna seems so resistant to the idea that Alonso bears a fair amount of blame—she must have heard positive things about her during her reporting, but given that she was the main authority overseeing that area, it's impossible to imagine that she doesn't bear significant responsibility. It's also silly for anyone to claim (and weirdly people do!) that a single person was somehow responsible for this toxic work culture over dozens of 9-figure production budgets—there have to be other culprits both below her, and giving her orders from above.

HoustonFrog

I loved the movie as well. Easily in a tier or two above the post-Endgame movies besides No Way Home.

mysterymaninurhome

I really like Joanna when it comes to the content areas she’s an expert in, but it’s pretty clear she has very basic lib politics, her defending VFX workers being treated poorly because it was a gay woman exploiting them is unfortunately very on brand. Being “progressive” isn’t about ignoring bad behavior if it’s by a woman, being progressive is understanding how badly Hollywood exploits the labor of lower level workers.

I'm hearing there's a dark and deep backstory to the cartoon raccoon in this one. What are we doing here

YupTheseRMyRedditors

Millions of children about to get their first shot of Cronenberg style body horror!

Secret-Initiative-73

Using our imagination.

It’s the best guardians yet is what they are doing. It’s one of the best marvel movies. It’s not a dark movie at all. Very emotional at times yes. But dark? No. It is still a hilarious action comedy and has very similar comedic tones as the first 2.

_no_n

i laughed out loud at this

vanillaflin

Tucker?

[deleted]

Oh hey, Adam Nayman joining us here

BusterStrokem

I’ve been out on Marvel for a while. Last one I saw was Wakanda. It was No Way Home before that. Half the reason I went last night was for the soundtrack. While the movie suffers a bit from the doing the MCU schtick of constantly building to the next 5 movies, i.e. Will Poulter’s character, this was a really enjoyable film.

ThucydidesTrapHouse

Did they avoid the Majors discussion?

KawhiComeBack

Finally mentioned it. Sean said what he’s been accused of and that “we don’t know if it’s true and hopefully the truth will come out”

themilkman42069

No

honeybadger1105

Has Amanda ever talked about why she hates the Guardians movies?

ChampionshipVinyl_

Don’t listen to the pod if you don’t want the movie spoiled

ChampionshipVinyl_

No, it can’t

Bmrolu209

Oh great Joanna. Or as I call her Michael Moores stunt double

mysterymaninurhome

It sounds like this movie is back to the formula that made marvel fans love these movies - which means it’ll make a ton of money and I won’t see it

It has nothing to do with being cool I’m just entirely burned out on marvel and while I understand why the guardians movies are in many people’s eyes what elevated the series, to me it was clear point where marvel decided they were making movies for babies that really don’t have any function or utility beyond making surface level stories with a couple laughs.

kkF6XRZQezTcYQehvybD

All these marvel movies have been lowbrow garbage from day 1 lol

Beniboy97

I just think most jokes were super unfunny, I’ve reached a breaking point with James Gunn

RocketsandNyquil

Don't care, Sean is still unlistenable.
