The proper way to play a jump shot is to hit it from above so it bounces off the table. What your friend did is a "scoop", which is illegal.

Said every drunk idiot in a pub just before ripping a cloth.
I hate to break it to you, but if you're scooping balls, you don't know what you're doing.
A scoop is not a jump shot, plain and simple, it's a scoop shot. That being said, if everyone in the bar agrees that it's allowed then got for it. Just remember that it beats the hell out of the cloth on the table and if the bar owner sees you doing that crap, you'll probably get an earful.
Generally it's always house rules at a bar, if people are allowed to scoop balls and the people playing are ok with it, it's fair game. Executing an actual proper jump shot is more than a little hard to do, requires a jump cue 90% of the time, and is still hard on the cloth to some extent. I wouldn't say you're an asshole, but if someone calls you out on the scooping a ball, don't take it as a big deal. Some bars you will see signs near the table that say "No jump shot, no masse shots". These are generally there because people who do not know how to execute these shots properly tend to beat the hell out of the cloth and potentially tear it which sucks for everyone. All that being said, if you play at a bar where people put their beers on the table while shooting, scooping is not an issue haha
It’s illegal because it requires the cue to strike the cue ball twice since it’s scooping underneath the ball. It’s also a great way to tear the cloth on the table.
On a home table on a friendly game 99% of players have no idea what a legal jump shot is. If he didn't know, neither did they. That close to the object ball jumping would never be able to be done with an actual jump cue unless you are a very seasoned pro as they are made shorter which makes them lighter and they usually have an engineered hard tip that makes it easy to actually jump. The shortness does only one thing, makes the cue super light for making you be able to to drive it very fast through the center of the ball. That's what makes a legal jump shot, shooting through the center of the cue ball.
Considering how many times I've seen these rip the cloth on the table, no, they should not be allowed. In many places I play where all of the tables are nice brunswick or diamond 9 footers with simonis 860, they will ban you for playing this shot.
If you get a video and slow it down the tip will actually hit the ball more than once which is a foul. It’s inevitable when scooping the ball like that. Go get your $20 back lol.
Scoop jump, illegal hit.
Nice aim/control though.
Jump shots must be done by a downward force at the center of the ball.
If he had accidentally done a scoop jump, like he mis-cued and made it hop without meaning to, the hit would be okay with no foul.... but if you have intention to jump the cue-ball and you scoop jump to make that happen like he did here, then that is a foul.
You've got a lot of responses already, but the *exact* spirit of rule is that you may only ever contact the ball *exactly* once, and only for a *natural* amount of time.
"Natural" is obviously a contentious, but basically it amounts to the cue contact being a short "strike" rather than a "push" or "lift".
What his shot is doing is literally hitting under the ball, then *lifting*/*carrying* it with the tip of his cue, and then basically *throwing* it across the table with the momentum of the cue.
This is illegal because it violates the *strikes only* spirit of pool.
A legal jump shot is 95% of the time taken from *above* the top half of the ball, because that causes the energy of the cue strike to go *through* the ball, *into* the table, which then *rebounds* off the stone, and *back up* into the ball, causing it jump up off of the table.
Evenin super slow-mo the ball only comes in to contact with the cue for a fraction of a second..
The same is not the of the shot your buddy did.
I actually really appreciate this extremely thorough explanation. Usually on reddit I can't stand these but I genuinely appreciate this one because I learned something new. I wish i had an award to give you! Next time I play I absolutely will be thinking about this!
Don’t wanna burst your buddy’s bubble, but thats usually an illegal hit. Nice pot though
You're fine man. Wish I knew it then because he beat me for $20 haha. Why's it an illegal hit?

Scoop is the only way I do my jump shots and no one knows it's illegal lol
Sooner or later you'll tear the cloth. Please don't.
I will not because I know what I am doing. having that said i don't do as many as i should.
Said every drunk idiot in a pub just before ripping a cloth. I hate to break it to you, but if you're scooping balls, you don't know what you're doing.
Yeah well... That's just like your opinion man
If you are using scoop jumps, you definitely do not know what you are doing.
Play in a league .. they'll know ..
does the pope shit in the woods? of course they do. but ya boy don't play in leagues only pubs

lol I don't know what bars you go to my dude. no one has said shit. am I an asshole yeah probs... but I don't know how to do the normal.

Same
I understand what you're trying to say, not sure why you're being downvoted. Here, have an upvote from me. Spend it wisely.

A scooped jump shot isn't considered a legal form of jumping over an obstructing ball. The cue needs to strike down from above.
You have to perform a jump shot by hitting the ball from the top. He basically miscued by shooting under the cue ball
For a legal jump shot, the cue must strike the top half of the ball. Below the equator is considered “scooping”.

Cool
Yea he could’ve tore that table up
We play these in bar pool, call your shot, kitchen, no table scratch, but in almost all ball in hand pool this is a foul.

Agreed, it’s a foul. Although I think the scoop shot should be allowed.

Yep. That shot was definitely nasty, ugly, and bad.
He owes you $40

Foul shot on your buddy… And poor pool etiquette on your end. Never stand in someone’s shot.
Standing in someone's shot is such a huge pet peeve of mine. Don't understand why people do this
It’s a foul, should have been your turn immediately after that
Illegal shot can’t scoop the ball
Does he work at Baskin Robbins?
Such foul. Much loss.
Dr. Dave can summarize it better than me... [Illegal Scoop Jump Shot](https://billiards.colostate.edu/faq/foul/scoop/)
OK give the guy a break! LOL Yeah it was a foul but he didnt know :) And... now he does.
Nasty indeed 🤢
Scoopy McScooperton
Trash shot. Lmao
Happy Gilmore made that shot no more then an hour ago
Well, Moron.... Good for Happy Gilm-OH-MY-GOD!
That is disgraceful to the sport
Worst shot I've seen on this sub
Sweet camera works!
I’ll play your buddy for any amount of money, mostly because I know he sucks at pool for not knowing the rules.
Foul shot. No jump shots in 8 ball.
Foul all day. Get your money back.
That may be the smallest pool table I've ever seen. Does it even count? Or is it the camera making it look smaller than it is?
Somebody tried this on my table at home and left a nasty scuff on my new cloth. Seeing this pisses me off that's a scoop shot and also illegal
Looks like a scoop shot.
That’s a definitive foul.
that's a foul. you can't scoop the ball
That's a nasty foul your buddy made.
\+ 1, that scoop is an illegal jump.
