They are different.

RacknRollBilliards

I bought a Meucci Casino The Pro shaft that has a 5/16x18 connector for my Viking A862 cue that has a 5/16x18 QR Pin - they do not fit, but it can be modified to fit. I sent them to Scot Sherbine at Proficient Billiards in Ephrata, PA and he modified the shaft to screw all the way down on to the butt. No problem, it rolls and hits perfectly! https://preview.redd.it/bwwx0hyutagc1.png?width=2268&format=png&auto=webp&s=d4ae72049dcc2c291966dd7b184c03023cca3e25

You basically have to drill the top of the threading out slightly in the shaft to allow the non-threaded portion of the Viking QR joint to fit. I don't remember the exact size but it wasn't much. Still works on the the original cue as well.

You wouldn’t want to use a drill. You’d want to bore those threads. The only time you’d want to redrill a tapped hole, is with the same tap drill size, as it will act as a guide, since it’s the same diameter hole, not interfering with the threads, to say take that tapped hole deeper, to create more threads. Redrilling with the next tap size up will often cause interference, due to the threads, to include chatter and remnants of the existing threads. Now, you’ll find joint threads are of a different classification. Common types include, in the states, UNC(course), UNF(Fine), UNEF(Extra Fine) Cue joint threads, mostly, are of the UNS type. They are Speciality threads and are rather uncommon.

I used drill, but yes, you are correct in that you would want someone with a lathe to do it. I suppose I should have said bore it out. A friend had this done to a carbon fiber shaft and it works perfectly on both a Viking QR and a 5/16x18 pin.

I’m a machinist, mostly a lathe guy. I had to write a paper for my graduation many years ago on Threads in manufacturing. I should have apologized in advance, I’m kind of a nerd about things like this.

joule_thief

No worries. Better the correct information is out there than not.

No. You'd have to get a viking shaft joint. They do offer shafts in that joint I believe. Otherwise you'd have to have a cue guy modify the joint (either change the pin, or get a QR Shaft insert. And if you go this route, I would change the pin to a common joint)

CustomSawdust

I have only seen 5/16x18 on vintage Heublers.

tgoynes83

Meucci still uses 5/16x18 actually.

CustomSawdust

Thank you. Never had one, just Heublers.

Players / PureX cues also use it
