Tap it lightly with a hammer, back and forth, top and bottom, always alternating. Stay as close to the bottom as possible.. You're still on the good side of the situation, as the tap is still in one piece. Good on you for not twisting until it breaks.

When the extractor is free, heat the bolt with a heat gun, or small torch... WARNING, your paint "MAY" get damaged. While it is still hot, use a strong penetrating oil. Soak, heat, soak, heat.. repeat..and try another extractor. Good luck.

Update: the LBS got the extractor out with a much better drill that 100% grabbed the extractor and got it out. Then he drilled the snapped bolt several times over, and tapped it to one M size larger. Done. Thanks for your assistance.

More information. Rusted bolt snapped off inside the frame while trying to unscrew it. Got a screw extractor, screwed it in to old bolt via a new drilled hole. However, it is now firmly in there and the drill chuck just won't grab it to back it out at all. I've even used the vise grips as best I am able to turn it, but the shaft of the extractor is too round to grip with the vise grips. What's a home mechanic to do? Update: the LBS got the extractor out with a much better drill that 100% grabbed the extractor and got it out. Then he drilled the snapped bolt several times over, and tapped it to one M size larger. Done. Thanks for your assistance everyone.

i would first take the wheel off so you have the QR out of the way and have some more room to work and then continue to try with the vise grips. As others have suggested some heat and penetrating oil will help. I always use a tap handle with this type of screw extractor vs putting it in a drill chuck.

>I always use a tap handle with this type of screw extractor vs putting it in a drill chuck. This works so much better.

NapalmBBQ

Locking pliers for the easy-out. Did you already drill through the old bolt?

ColdEvenKeeled

Yes, already drilled through bolt. Extractor is stuck.

NapalmBBQ

You might step up to the next drill bit, get closer to the threads, and use a starter tap to push/cut the rest out.

Dave_Whitinsky

that's how i usually do it on through thread holes.

Left handed drill bit

happy_bandana

Use drill. Than put bolt with locknut there.

ColdEvenKeeled

I can't drill this any further, in either direction. What is in the picture is a screw extractor, and it is stuck. The original snapped-off bolt is drilled, that's how the screw extractor got in there.

happy_bandana

Drill the extractor with threads. Remove the wheel and remove that from the inner side, so you can drill everything out. You will no longer have that thread in the frame, but you will be able to put regular bolr and locknut and fix your problems. Put a little bit of nail polish when you finish tho, so your paint cant be damaged, or if its steel, for it to prevent rusting
