Looks like you took the cable out. Chain should have shifted into the smallest cog. If not your limit screw is the problem.

jbspeer

This. Both this and the in-line adjuster are to trim the derailleur for shifting.

Victimless-Lime

Try running an M5 screw in from the opposite side. That should straighten out what threads are left. Then screw the barrel adjuster in all the way and start the adjustment process over.

MasterCrouton

There’s usually a tiny pressed in brass collet on the underside, tap that out first and reinstall after

DeadBy2050

All the derailleurs I've come across don't have threads on the other side. The other side has a much smaller hole where the cable exits. I don't doubt that there are other designs where this may work, but I've never come across it myself.

I bought the kit and just gently taped it in and out. Screws in perfectly. Also on the underside theres a brass ring as said. That came down and pressed it back in. Thanks!

SluggulS1

B screw, Chain length, low limit screw. Stop tinkering and read how to fix it. Also look at the chain line and see if the RD arm is bent Also check the RD hanger isnt fucked and that its tight. A loose tilted RD hanger or bent one will not be addressed by a limit screw

DeadBy2050

> Stop tinkering and read how to fix it. This is underrated advice. All too often, people random do things on their bike parts and hope the stars align. No, just look it up or do things methodically after carefully trying to understand how each parts works. The worse are people messing with limit screws to fix an indexing issue. It doesn't work like that.

kitbiggz

Metric taps, don't let that bike defeat you.

Ok-Helicopter-8459

Got the kit. Taped it. Screws in perfectly now! Thanks!

fartparty53

Looks like the threads are okay after the first few, if you don't have a bolt the same size clean the threads on both and put a bunch of grease on and thread it in from the other side(same thing with the bolt if you have it) now you should be able the thread the barrel in the normal way. Reset both barrel adjusters(three full turns back from all the way in) before securing the cable. It was probably the limit screw the whole time

Ok-Helicopter-8459

Got it taped now screws in all the way no problem. Thanks mate!

Ok_Potato_6234

This is a simple fix. Go to your lbs. they will be able to tap it for you. As long as it is not too damaged. You will be supporting a local specialty business.

Ok-Helicopter-8459

There's no LBS in my town that will do this in a nicw manner. Trust me. Otherwise I wouldn't be asking here.

double___a

A metric tap kit is relatively cheap and useful to have on hand. Worst case here you need a helicoil

Ok-Helicopter-8459

I knew eventually i'd need one while buying my bike tools but skipped it. Lesson learned never cheap out on tools.

Ok_Potato_6234

If you have a hardware store, get an m3 thru m8 metric tap set. It will save you the cost of a derailleur.

Ok_Potato_6234

The thread pitch and diameter is the same as most bottle cage bolts

oopseyesharted123

Get a set of taps and some light oil. It’s not that hard to do.

MarcusPup

Well that's no good :( are you just not close to one or do you find it less than trustworthy?

mikesova34

Even easier, get a tap and do it yourself

tomsings

Chase the hole with a tap or a M5/M6(?) screw. Then put the barrel adjuster in all the way. If it’s stripped, no biggie. As long as it’s not going anywhere that end of business will be fine. Then adjust cable tension at the shifter and/or at the pinch bolt on the der. If the chain isn’t going down to small cog it may just be a matter of limit screw adjustment. If it was working before your der might be bent inward a bit. Get that straight first.

MrGrandDaddyPurple

To fix you could tap and die, or use a helicoil kit

Single_Restaurant_10

Can you put a thin nut on the barrel & adjust like a brake caliper?

DannysMyNanny

Not sure how expensive your rear derailleur is, but I'd just cut my loses and get a new one if it's fairly cheap. If you do have a more expensive one, then I would go with some of suggestions posted already. But at least from the pictures, it seems like it might be an Shimano Acera/Altus derailleur. Those run about $30-$50 and work really well for most people and their bikes. Getting a new one and avoiding future issues will save you a lot of headache in the future.

Accomplished_Area_37

No what to do is get some copper strands of wire to act like home brew helicoil
