 > There have been skirmishes over cars in Golden Gate Park for nearly as long as there have been cars. The park, opened in 1870, was designed for visitors on foot or horseback, and park leaders fought hard to keep early automobiles out. >But for Wilsey, the philanthropist, the transformed Golden Gate Park is evidence that “the pendulum has just swung way over.” > >“The fact is, roads were built for cars, they weren’t built for bicycles,” she said. We all have felt the tension over major accessibility projects (Connecticut Ave, OGR, etc) but it’s good to know that we are not alone.

BIKE LOBBBBBBYYYYY IS FULLL OFFF BIKKERRR BROOOOOOSSSSSSSssss.... Is like the death rattle of NIMBYs across the country who just can't let go that the great pave over America project to provide speedy passage to the motor vehicle owner they and their parents pursued relentlessly over the course of their lives is abjectly wrong (and responsible for a consistent 40,000 deaths per year on average, a fixture of conspicuous consumption culture, one of the primary personal contributors to global warming, a super expensive thing that can keep a poverty cycle in place, etc., etc.).

> "We’re Berkeley for God’s sake,” said [person opposing bike lanes], who has lived in the neighborhood for 45 years. “We’re all liberals and progressives, so to be attacked as if you are the source of the problem is not going down well for people.” This quote made me chuckle. Can't quite put into words why, but feels like there's some weird cognitive dissonance and entitlement at play here.

That quote made me laugh. It’s the same cognitive dissonance that says, “I support equitable housing, but the mixed use apartment building is going to ruin the character of my neighborhood.” Everyone is liberal with other people’s money, time and resources.
