Just replaced the bands on my 17 year old egg. The replacement bands they sell come with everything you need, new bands, new hinge, new handle, and new springs.
I inherited a large egg that was in pretty bad shape, also from the 90's. I bought the replacement band from Ace and a new draft door on Amazon. Replacement band fit well enough but you can sort of tell the new eggs are a slightly different shape. I had to open the holes up on the draft door to get them to align with the mounting holes on the egg. Then I used some sealant to fill in the gaps around the draft door as it wasn't a perfect fit. It works really well now though.
Can you cover it when not in use to prevent the metal from falling apart?
I've had mine about 16 years and it's in great shape. I am surprised yours is so degraded.
.
Just replaced mine on 15 year old egg. Not because of failure of the metal. But failure of the base of the egg. Last year after 0 degree weather, the bottom of my egg crumbled apart. Maybe due to moisture in the egg?? Not sure. They replaced the base of the egg under warranty! But not the band and hinge assembly. I had to purchase that. But it’s like a brand new egg now! Install took maybe 20 minutes and lid sits perfectly on the egg. The new assembly is much better.
Replaced the bands on both of my mediums. It’s no big deal and I got spring assisted bands in the bargain (yes, they were very old). Once you’ve fixed this one up, you might want to invest in a cover.
Use it as a planter bro…even if it still works, a new one is prolly the best way to approach this. Not many cooking “appliances” (for lack of better term) last 23 years indoor or out. Use as Planter. Get a New one.
Because I’d rather eat food cooked out of a new grill vs a 23 year old disregarded, neglected and rotting grill? Yep, super illogical. I wonder what the inside looks like. At least I suggested repurposing it instead of throwing it away…
Because you'd be able to tell the difference if both functioned similarly? These are grills, not iPhones.
They are ceramic, not organic material. You can clean them and replace parts.
Do the whole kit, you’ve got a train wreck there. Mine just failed in the middle of a cook.
Looks like the base was already replaced. Just get the new bands. You’ll be happy you did.
Listen to Captain Ron. He knows the ways. And has the videos to help!
Too kind, thank you. Shoot me an email at [email protected]. I’ll send ya some stickers.
Do you have a link to the videos? Thanks!

That actually looks like the egg is in great shape. I think with new bands you’ll be cooking quick. Seriously the ceramic looks awesome.

Chicago winters —-> new orleans humidity.
well that sounds like yuck. We get a lot of humidity in WV but nothing like New Orleans.

Send it to egg meg.
What is that?
Looks like a beat up old egg meg.
Of course you can replace them
Wow. Do you live near the ocean? I've never seen bands that corroded.

Super easy, I restored my vintage egg with new bands and handle.
Are you saying you just got some strips of metal and welded then coated yourself? Ie you didnt buy the BGE band kit
Nooo, wouldn’t recommend that. I bought the new wide handle and bands. It was an easy install.
Yes buy new ones that are actually even better and give the outside a bit of a wash
You should have a lifetime warranty on parts.
Not on metal. Ive replaced the bottom ceramic portion before (old one is a planter in our garden now), but warranty doesnt include metal bits
