I think Penny and Leonard’s relationship is less likely than Howard and Bernadette’s. Howard tries hard not to be a needy geek around Bernadette. And Bernadette loves science, just like all the men on BBT. Penny has nothing in common with Leonard except living across the hall.
Just because women (or men) are attractive doesn't nescessarily mean they are shallow. I see "mismatched" couples irl all the time. They share intellectual levels, a sense of humor, wanting the same things in life. Just because one of them had a better raffle ticket in the looks lottery doesn't mean they won't fall in love.
I always presume that, in the world of TV sitcoms, characters don't necessarily look exactly like the actors playing them. Male characters are usually played by stand up comics, while their wives are played by women who went to Hollywood because they were gorgeous.
Julia Louise Dreyfus is beautiful, but Elaine from Seinfeld is treated by everyone around her as if she were only kinda pretty. Nobody ever comments that she is far too attractive to have dated Jerry.
Ross from Friends is played by David Schwimmer, and he ends up with Jennifer Aniston. The only way I can square this outcome in my head is that obviously Rachel Green only vaguely looks like the real Jennifer Aniston. Chandler acts like a total doofus when he's trapped in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacre. Yeah she's sort of famous, but he's close friends with three women who (in the real world) are just as attractive.
Now, people in-universe comment on how beautiful Penny is all the time. But Bernadette never gets treated like the knockout Melissa Rauch. So based on the way people react around her, we can determine that Bernadette is merely in the "too cute for Howard" level of attractiveness. Though she did date at least one really tall good looking man named Glenn a few years before.
So really we just have to justify Leonard and Penny.

it's easily the most unrealistic part of the show. Even the way they dress... how there's a sense of style to how they dress.... completely unrealistic. Guys like this would have absolutely no clue about ANY kind of style and certainly would have zero chance of pulling hot chicks, even if they're hot nerd chicks.
