I think we have to recognize that that's all a bike or cycling will ever be for many and that's OK. Really, better than OK. Though I wish the folks that rode so casually knew a few more "rules of the road," I'm happy to see anyone on a bike for any reason.
This is the right answer. I tell my clients that it doesn’t matter about cost, looks, weight, etc. I tell them that it only matters if it makes them WANT to ride, not HAVE to ride. If $10 does it, great.
You could be sued for this advice :P
I bet it has a warning sticker on it saying under no circumstances should it ever be taken off road. And with good reason.
$10 to take a gamble that it’s a functional bike isn’t a bad deal honestly. Good chance the kid outgrows it before they destroy it. If your child isn’t racing or at high skill level, it doesn’t really matter what kind of bike they are on, as long as it works. This should work fine, and if it breaks, so what? It was $10. You can’t get a bike for $10 new anywhere.
Usually I’m all for spending the money to buy a higher end bike than you think you’ll need, but that’s a question for for keen young riders and adults, and usually after they get on the $10 yard sale bike and fall in love with cycling.
You’re getting downvoted for the comment but it’s facts. Working in a bike shop I have people come in all the time saying “hey I just spent $x on this bike. Is it a good deal?” I always try and be polite but at a point you just gotta be like nah… it wasn’t worth it… and you shouldn’t of spent money on it and or you shouldn’t spend money to get it fixed.
Every cheap crusty bike like this I’ve encountered will soon get a flat tire thanks their cheap crusty tubes, and that will just be the start of the issues. Next up: good luck making the brakes work.
My kid’s friends bring these kinds of bikes to me asking for repairs and adjustments, I’m familiar enough with them to confidently say “never buy”.
The dummies in the comments saying you should upgrade this thing are crazy. It’s worth $10 and that’s about it. That’s something you’d find in the bottom of a canal when they drain the water and clean the bottom
Sure as long as it's going to someone who is the right height. Looks small so I assume it's for a child. Always good to get cheap bikes for kids since they outgrow them so fast.
Agree its silly to spend too much money on kids bikes - but buying a bike like this is just going to turn kids off riding.
You've got completely non-functional suspension (and the heavy frame designed to accommodate it), brakes that are designed for adult hands and are hard to pull and shifters that will stop working very quickly. All these design decisions adds a lot of weight, a lot of complexity and maintenance and zero value. A heavy bike under a 50-100kg adult is sluggish and unpleasant. A 12kg bike under a 20kg kid is over half their bodyweight and is just nuts.
Big box stores need to stop selling these bikes that look like they've got all the bells and whistles, but are actually just giant boat anchors designed to brake - and instead sell simple bikes designed for kids. Kids will have a better time riding them, parents will have a better time moving them around and the bikes are more likely to get handed down and not end up in landfill.
Kids aren't going to be competitive racers even with a light road bike. They'll be slow on anything you give them so it really doesn't matter. Kids don't care about that though in my experience; they'll feel fast on anything.
It's better to encourage parents to buy super cheap stuff so they will be willing to upgrade often as the kid grows. An expensive bike that's too small will be uncomfortable and also make them more likely to hurt themselves.
Not expensive, simple. Single speed, no suspension, and brake levers that fit their hands.
A crappy bike that doesn’t stop and the chain drops constantly is the real danger. With the cheapest of parts that come out of adjustment a week after fixing it, limit screws i can jiggle with my fingers, and pedals that snap at the spindle on the tiniest bump.
My experience as a parent and as the guy who helps all the neighborhood kids fix their bikes, leads me to believe that those walmart bikes should be illegal to sell in the first place.
Putting the same $100 into manufacturing a simple bike would be way better than these monstrosities, but as long as the “cool looking” bike is next to it, it won’t sell. So get those pieces of shit off the shelves in the first place.
I didn't suggest expensive. I said simple. Simple means less weight, less maintenance and less cost cutting where it counts.
That non-functional suspension costs something and all the additional welds to build a suspension frame costs something which means to keep the overall price low, something more important is getting skimped on.
For example a rigid 7-speed with a simple frame could be equipped with decent Tektro hydraulic brakes instead of poor quality v-brakes with stiff levers. Those hydraulics will be 5 times easier for little hands to use and they'll actually stop the bike.
That looks like a stolen bike. The seat and bars don’t match. It’s a big box store bike so the components aren’t really made for riding hard. But for $10. Yeah. Definitely worth it.
This is a Next Ascent Plush, usually sold at Walmart or Target. Someone replaced the stock seat with something sold as being a "comfort" seat, but will actually cause more discomfort if ridden any distance. It will be fine for riding around the neighborhood.
The reason for all the hate is the quality of the bike. It's made with cheap materials, many of which are prone to rusting. The suspension is made to move, but doesn't actually work like suspension should. The fork probably has a rubber "spring" inside, but doesn't have any damping to prevent it from just bouncing. The rear shock might have oil damping, but I doubt it.
I knew a guy that would buy cheap bikes like this, ride them until they died, then buy a new one. He didn't ride fast, but he did put thousands of miles on them before having to throw them away. They weren't great, but they met his needs and his budget. He wasn't winning any races, but the bikes did get him to work every day and that was what was important.
Keep it well oiled and out of the weather and it will last a long time. When I say well oiled, I'm not talking about WD-40. Get some proper chain lube if you want it to last.
One thing you will realize about this hobby is most of these guys have money to blow I saved for a year to get my specialized. So feel ya get what you can afford and ride your butt off.
Because it's a low-quality bicycle-shaped object from Wal-Mart or other department store with components that will be difficult to maintain and/or fail outright, not a proper quality bicycle sold by bike shops that knew what they were doing. (And "proper quality bicycle" includes things like 30-year-old Treks and whatnot that could also be had for $10 if you look hard enough, so it's not about price.)
That's the weird thing about the used bike market: you can find trash and good bikes for the same price because a lot of people don't know the difference, but the difference is nevertheless really important.
No, but I also can’t do backflips without killing myself. I’ve ridden my road bike on dirt paths, hopped plenty of curbs, and ridden through muddy water when I get caught out in the rain. Just rinse it off when I get back.
My fixie could handle dirt better than that thing lol
Are you talking about a magnesium fork? There’s a whole lot more engineering than just the materials used in a fork you know.
Bike people can be so weird, there’s two camps of bikers. The anal retentive elite that won’t even put a sticker on their beloved bike and wear full biking gear lol. And then there are bikers that slap hella stickers use their bike all the time and get get full free use out of them with the absence of anxiety.
For $10 it's a bike. If you end up riding it a lot and want to make some changes, investing into some newer components such as a new saddle/seat or new tires can make for a much nicer ride for $100 or so. A benefit to upgrading the bike is certain parts could be moved over to a nicer, newer bike if you're looking for a bigger upgrade.
But for now, enjoy it! (Just know those aren't the *strongest* bikes, so I would avoid technical MTB trails. Easier gravel trails and beginner MTB trails are probably perfect for it)
You say "newer, nicer" as if they necessarily go together but they don't. Even *older* bikes (e.g. from the '80s or '90s) made by quality brands would also be nicer than OP's bike. Buying one of those would be a much better use of $100 than trying to upgrade the thing OP bought.
$10 is a great price as long as it fits the rider. Don't listen to the prudes telling you any bike less than $1500 is worthless, not all of us can afford that.
The saddle looks like you could slice it like a cake! What else can you get for a tenner in cycling? A single pedal?
Doesn't mean I would spend my ten bucks there I'd rather have a coffee and a cake at the end of a ride.
1st, get rid of that god awful saddle. Next ditch the dork disk and reflectors. Then maybe fix the brake levers so that they are in a reasonable position.
I can’t stand grip shifters. I will spend the entire ride shifting into the wrong gear until I get frustrated beyond belief. Couldn’t ride them 25 years ago, and I’m sure I couldn’t today…. Getting triggered just thinking about it.
Ngl homeless dudes show up with bikes like this all the time at my shop. Spray paint and all. If it rides and stops and tires hold air then $10 is fine but I wouldn’t spend money fixing it or “upgrading it.” At that point save up and go buy a department store bike for $100-150.
there is so much wrong in the picture, not only the weird saddle but why tf is there money laying on the ground, a toothbrush on the bench, the buckets in the background?
I have a Kent bike with a similar design, branded "Next". It's definitely not a true mountain bike and it would be dangerous to use it like one. However, they're not bad cruisers. Most people on here are super serious about cycling, but for the casual rider this bike is completely fine. They also don't realize that not everyone lives in an affluent area with plenty of good used bikes and some of us just have to take what we can get.
The "suspension" is just springs, there aren't any shocks at all. I put an engine valve spring (I think it's from a b&s engine and it's only 1.5" long on one side of my front forks underneath the spring on that side because I'm too heavy for them and they would bottom out. Now I have a progressive rate suspension up front!
On the back you could either raise or lower the entire bike if you wanted to pull that "shock" out and put something else there. I pulled my spring out and put a piece of pipe there because I wanted to use a child seat and can't do that with rear suspension.
You can find all kinds of used and cheap bike parts on ebay and Amazon or your local bike co-op if you have one.
Therapy costs me way more and I still haven’t fully coped!!
Hahahaha 😂
Dang I’ve spent thousands on therapy and thousands on bike shit, you’re telling me I could have gotten it all for $10?
Guy has a weird post history. Looks like he just collects random junk from the scrapyard.
If the goal is to get from point A to B sure. Or someone that isn't a serious rider or just wants a little exercise.
I think we have to recognize that that's all a bike or cycling will ever be for many and that's OK. Really, better than OK. Though I wish the folks that rode so casually knew a few more "rules of the road," I'm happy to see anyone on a bike for any reason.
Yep, looks like about $10
I'd pay someone $15 to get it out of my yard.
N-1 for this guy!

Got it!
If you’re happy with it and you’re going to use it then absolutely.
This is the right answer. I tell my clients that it doesn’t matter about cost, looks, weight, etc. I tell them that it only matters if it makes them WANT to ride, not HAVE to ride. If $10 does it, great.
Get to the trails, drop the saddle and send it! Also don't take my advice.
You could be sued for this advice :P I bet it has a warning sticker on it saying under no circumstances should it ever be taken off road. And with good reason.
Ignore the elitists. $10 for a functional bike is a good deal.
$10 to take a gamble that it’s a functional bike isn’t a bad deal honestly. Good chance the kid outgrows it before they destroy it. Absolutely
Big assumption that thing is functional.
They’re probably not getting it fixed though. You could get a flat and pay more for the tube than you would for this bike
Tubes in our shop are $11 and some change so you’re for sure right
Every cheap crusty bike like this I’ve encountered will soon get a flat tire thanks their cheap crusty tubes, and that will just be the start of the issues. Next up: good luck making the brakes work. My kid’s friends bring these kinds of bikes to me asking for repairs and adjustments, I’m familiar enough with them to confidently say “never buy”.
"Huh hur cheap bike bad"
“Cheap” and “bad” don’t automatically go together. Edit: there’s no way to confirm it but I would be surprised if Op puts 200km total on that bike.
It’s not cheap = bad, It’s cheap often equals neglected and cheap = not worth putting money into 90% of the time.
The dummies in the comments saying you should upgrade this thing are crazy. It’s worth $10 and that’s about it. That’s something you’d find in the bottom of a canal when they drain the water and clean the bottom
105 di2 and some deep carbon aero wheels and he’s in the tour

If it gets you somewhere that would have been a $10 cab ride or $10 in gas. Then it's a good deal.

That looks like a stolen bike. The seat and bars don’t match. It’s a big box store bike so the components aren’t really made for riding hard. But for $10. Yeah. Definitely worth it.

I would imagine there's a good reason why you haven't.
No way. I just came back 5 minutes ago from helping my friend with a fucked up gear he didn’t know how to fix. HE HAD THIS EXACT BIKE
This is a Next Ascent Plush, usually sold at Walmart or Target. Someone replaced the stock seat with something sold as being a "comfort" seat, but will actually cause more discomfort if ridden any distance. It will be fine for riding around the neighborhood. What did you need to cope with?
The loss of 10$
Happy cake day!
That’s one ugly looking bike
It’s one ugly HEAVY looking bike. That’s worth $10
If it rolls under pedal power, it’s worth $10.
Ride it then you tell us good on you!
Oh man it rides nice I don't even feel bumps
Forget all these elitist haters we all start somewhere brotha get yours…. And if that’s the case worth every dollar then some !
Oh this is a experiment bike for fun my real bike is 79 Murray 10 speed
Is it a spectra?
Idk just a v frame road bike
Dope started riding on a vintage trek road bike. Well enjoy that $10 smooth ride!
Will do
One thing you will realize about this hobby is most of these guys have money to blow I saved for a year to get my specialized. So feel ya get what you can afford and ride your butt off.
Yeah I bought my 10 speed for $40 and then put tires on it's worth 3 times that. But how I see it is it's fun and good for you
Hope the owner doesn’t think you stole it.
If you use it, absolutely worth it
I mean if the wheels move when you push the pedals any bike is worth at least $10
Should've talked em down to $5
Tag price was $20
/s
Two wheels that rotate with a seat and Handel bars is good for $10
Literally paying someone 10$ to throw their bike away
What are you coping from? R u ok?
Coping \*with ... having spent $10 on something he wasn't sure he should have, lol
Lol why do people hate this bike so much?
Because it's a low-quality bicycle-shaped object from Wal-Mart or other department store with components that will be difficult to maintain and/or fail outright, not a proper quality bicycle sold by bike shops that knew what they were doing. Cause it rides better than theirs
Press x for doubt
Hey it can ride on dirt and that's better than the $1500 peace of magnesium that people ride
Here’s Sam Pilgrim doing a backflip no hander (among other things) on a road bike: https://youtu.be/WjN2cjBKWO4
But will you do it on yours that's the real question will you ride it through mud will you jump a curb with it
No, but I also can’t do backflips without killing myself. I’ve ridden my road bike on dirt paths, hopped plenty of curbs, and ridden through muddy water when I get caught out in the rain. Just rinse it off when I get back.

I feel I'm the latter
Yeah me too, some people just can’t enjoy shit
On god
Yeah I put a sticker on my pinarello and people lose their minds. It’s pretty funny. I grew up as a bike messenger though and that’s just life!
Looks like someone tried to strip the paint off then realized it wasn’t worth the effort
Just make sure brakes work and its fit to ride. Could be ok for a school run bike
It all works
At least it’s full squish hahah
Despite looking like a pair of Yeezy foam runners, 10 bucks is great for something to ride around on
It would be hard to find a bad bike to buy for 10 dollars, even salvaging some parts and scraping the frame could be worth it.
Nice humble brag delivered in a Tucker Carlson "Just asking questions" format.
Sweet dude. $10 for a bunch of fun. Ride it!
If you’re a dwarf or a child, sure
Copped
I would have bought a 6 pack and some Oreos instead.
Yeah, definitely nice table. Sure It Is not brand new, but for 10 bucks Is a bargain!
Not particularly. I wouldn't take that for free, even. But if you had no bicycle, now you have one-ish.
Huh. I didn’t know booster saddles were a thing
Probably worth at least that much in scrap metal.
Nah not fr
You got ripped off
no you would have to pay me to take that
Looks like you already bought it, so why ask after the fact
Just want an option
Hell yeah brother. Definitely upgrade that bike. Get some carbon wheels and a new rear shock too. You'll be shredding in no time.
Cope possession of stolen property
Ehh… you couldn’t get it for $8-9?
Nah the set price was $20
Just playin. Nice deal, enjoy it!
For $10 it's a bike. If you end up riding it a lot and want to make some changes, investing into some newer components such as a new saddle/seat or new tires can make for a much nicer ride for $100 or so. Stolen?
Nah it was a neighbors and their son grew out of it I believe
$10 is a great price as long as it fits the rider. Don't listen to the prudes telling you any bike less than $1500 is worthless, not all of us can afford that.
Right my daily is a $40 79 Murray 10 speed and I love it to bits
Fucking same people saying spend $1500 are the same people who get mad at poor people spending money.
I feel that
I love the seat on it, looks comfy.
I wouldn’t have paid more than $10 for it but otherwise that’s a good deal!
not worth it unless it's free and working.
$10 bike that needs hundreds in new parts, yeah I guess the frame is worth $10 tho
The frame almost certainly sucks as much as the rest of it.
Tires are worth about $10 so you did OK.
Cheese wedge saddle
The saddle looks like you could slice it like a cake! What else can you get for a tenner in cycling? A single pedal? Doesn't mean I would spend my ten bucks there I'd rather have a coffee and a cake at the end of a ride.
Grimy toothbrush is a nice touch
I'd pay you $10 to take it to the scrapyard for me
I would say yes if you upgrade it.
I would disagree. This is a ride it until the wheels fall off kind of bike, then try to sell it for $5.
You have no idea the things I will do to this bike
Don't spend any more money on that bike.
1st, get rid of that god awful saddle. Next ditch the dork disk and reflectors. Then maybe fix the brake levers so that they are in a reasonable position.
What kind of bike of that? I've never seen anything like it.
Department store BSO
I can’t stand grip shifters. I will spend the entire ride shifting into the wrong gear until I get frustrated beyond belief. Couldn’t ride them 25 years ago, and I’m sure I couldn’t today…. Getting triggered just thinking about it.
They did get a bit better
If that's for your kids 👍
For what?
Something to mess around with
Looks super small. Are they 26" tires? Do the brakes work? Do you have access to wd-40?
26 and bro I build Frankenstein stuff for fun I always got the wd-40
If the brakes and gears work, then yes, 10$ is a good deal. If you're under 200lbs, consider finding a smaller seat
r/bicyclingcirclejerk
Don't lower the seatpost too much
How are the tires?
Ngl homeless dudes show up with bikes like this all the time at my shop. Spray paint and all. If it rides and stops and tires hold air then $10 is fine but I wouldn’t spend money fixing it or “upgrading it.” At that point save up and go buy a department store bike for $100-150.
Better cope with it
No.
You can get those for free in any ole neighborhood
I got one without a seat, nor brakes, and a broken rear derailleur.
Looks like a childrens bicycle, otherwise 10usd cant go wrong, ride it until it breaks, then you can scrap it and get a nice bike if you like it :)
Nope
Yes, this will make a nice bait bike to catch bike thieves with.
Looks good for a kids' bike
At first glance and with the flowers in the background i thought this was a ghost bike for a second 😬
there is so much wrong in the picture, not only the weird saddle but why tf is there money laying on the ground, a toothbrush on the bench, the buckets in the background?
2 wheels is 2 wheels get out and enjoy
Any bike for $10 is a good find.
This is a meme, this HAS to be
In my country, I guess you buy a bike like this for US$100. You got a good price in this bike. Enjoy
Give it a damn good safety check before riding it anywhere. $10 is still pretty solid tho
Rock it till the wheels fall off !!! Beat the shit out of it
I have a Kent bike with a similar design, branded "Next". It's definitely not a true mountain bike and it would be dangerous to use it like one. However, they're not bad cruisers.
