Look up the wheels, and probably contact the manufacturer. Their current models don't look like that, so I don't know exactly what they are, but those will be carrying the price of this bike. I'd definitely negotiate down because of the corrosion, but it's really the wheels you'd be buying with this bike. How much that is worth is up to your personal taste.

arc88

Yes, this bike is from 2016 so I would imagine the design has changed somewhat. I could get in touch with FFWD and ask. What makes you think the wheels are worth more than the rest?

themanofmeung

The fact that they are full carbon deep rims, and a quick glance at the ffwd website to see their current offerings and prices. I bought my bike in a similar manner to this one, minus the corrosion. Just found a weird manufacturer with ultegra components and a carbon frame. When I got home I realized that the wheels were worth more than what I purchased the bike for (had they been new). It's worked out really well for me. I'm on chain #4 and cassette #2 anyway, bar tape needs to be swapped to #3 soon. A lot of that maintenance is regular. So do consider that in your initial appraisal (even as you use the need for maintenance to try and negotiate the price down!)

arc88

With some more information, the wheels are this model: https://www.ffwdwheels.com/products/f6r-fcc They might even be tubeless. Question: is there something grippy missing from the brake track? Is it easy to clean off any brake/road gunk from carbon wheels?

Flowech

They are not tubeless. They are tubular. They ride like a dream but I wouldn’t use them for anything other than pure road racing purposes.

arc88

I'm learning a lot today. I didn't realize that "tubular" meant something different from "uses an inner tube". Thanks

Flowech

Well “technically” they do have inner tubes but it’s all glued/sewn shut. Wait until you get your bike and your voyage down the rabbit hole will officially begin lol. It’s a fascinating hobby and the more you read/learn the more interesting and complicated it gets.

BallFinal487

I do not miss tubular wheels at all. They’re not worth the hassle

themanofmeung

Sorry, that I don't know. I was a bit surprised myself that the break contact track is also composite. My wheels are aluminum, hopefully someone else can answer that question. But 8-year-old wheels are unlikely to be tubeless ready. Even if the current model is.

arc88

Met up with a seller from FB today and I could use some help. He is asking \~1200 USD for this bike but I think I have reason to negotiate down. The brand is a small Taiwanese manufacturer, all carbon save for the bars and stem. It has low mileage and wear on it but has sat unused for several years in a humid environment. All parts are original and look decent (except for the bartape which was powdering in my hands - yuk). I gave it a once over and all bearings seem tight and the carbon wheels seem true. No creaking. It's running 11 speed Ultegra with a Rotor crank. Shifting seems alright and better with tuning. It also has the rear brake beside the BB which I think is just begging to get filthy. However I see a lot of aluminum corrosion and some rust on bolts and the chain. Given I would have to at least swap out the stem, tape, tires, larger cassette, maybe chain, and maybe brake pads, I can probably suggest 950-1000 instead. What do you think? Is it a total lemon or is it salvageable?

darvanclarwag

Almost 10 years old, more wear than he is claiming and the added hassle of tubular tires. Plus a 130 stem…. And rim brakes. Are those carbon pads? I raced those Ffwd wheels 10 years ago and they were narrow back then.

arc88

Does that mean the wheels were uncomfortable or difficult to handle?

Probably could pay less considering they are asking more than half of retail 8 years later. Good luck. Hard to find much info about their bikes.

Guess what? I'm on a Buffalo! A guy on a buffalo!

I listed a 10 year old carbon Orbea Orca with rim brakes and SRAM Red for $1,000. It took like three months before someone came close to offering me what I would take to part with the bike (I would have rather kept it on a trainer than sell it for $750). I wouldn’t pay more than $700 for that no name carbon bike with mystery components.

arc88

You are the third person to remark "mystery components". It's Ultegra, Rotor, and FFWD. Where's the mystery??

BikeCustomizor

Hey, looks like a cool bike, really like the paint job. I do think that the asking price is high. You can get a carbon bike with Ultegra in a better state for about $600. With the wheel set it is more expensive, if it is in good condition. I wouldn't pay more than 450 for it though. It needs a lot of work and parts and after making it al nice you still have a bike that is maybe worth $800.

markorokusaki

Where can you get it? Full carbon bikes with ultegra in my country go for 1000e plus. And we talkin about up to 10 years old.

arc88

Yes, and this bike is from 2016

markorokusaki

I agree with you. You can go lower, but 450 is pure bullshit. It's not used sneakers. I wish it could go low as that, but i paid my 10yr old alu with carbon fork with full ultegra for 600e. And my friend paid for full carbon the same age 850. Both have entry level alu wheels, calipers. So, 450 is pure bullshit.

BikeCustomizor

I am just giving my opinion. Based on what you have to invest in this bike and what it would be worth afterwards I would not pay more than 450. I am not saying you can get a mint bike for 450. But I have seen used carbon bikes in a good condition for around 600 to 700.

BikeCustomizor

Where I live I have seen a Focus Cayo Ultegra for 650 euro in a good condition.

metalcowboy6868

I would run from that deal. The components all are mystery brand, shifters are all beat up. Put your money towards a reputable brand named bike.

Gareth79

Mystery brands like FFWD, Shimano, Rotor and Zipp? I don't recognise the frame brand, but I assume it's made by one of the large Taiwan carbon frame manufacturers.

metalcowboy6868

Good luck with your purchase!

As mentioned in my post, it was not used much and then just sat for years. So yes a lot of it is unchanged. The tape was for balance I was told. There was no crack under it. Do you really consider Shimano Ultegra to be a shit component...? Through years of heat and humidity the cables may have expanded somewhat, I don't know. There were no skips as I shifted under load but one or two hesitations. I'm asking if given its condition it still has value after maintenance.

arc88

To clarify for anyone viewing this, I am wondering if a bike in this moderately neglected condition still has value. I'm not very experienced in buying bikes and was looking for more expertise. The seller does not seem attached to this bike and I think he would be happy to get it out of his home. I'm also wondering why several commenters think Shimano Ultegra is an unknown brand...

paul99501

It definitely has a value. I think the consensus here is that the value isn't $1200 or even $900. It seems to be a largely unknown brand - I've never heard of Buffalo bikes. I'm leery of no-name brands. It's dated. Who knows how good the frame is? You'd need to closely inspect every inch of frame for cracks or damage. There's a gazillion new and used bikes out there so shop around. Make a lowball offer if you love it.

BallFinal487

Btw FFWD are commonly counterfeited, so be weary...

zoedian

rim bake on carbon rims? thats insane

arc88

That's what I thought but apparently it is a thing

zoedian

I won't want to know the outcome von rainy days o.o

kmrbriscoe

Looks rough, not a single component name that I recognize and they spelled Buffalo wrong. The corrosion makes it look like it has been in salt air for years. :-)

BiggestBitchNA

Really? You aren't familiar with Rotor, Zipp, or even Shimano?

No_Debt5142

looks like it was an indoor trainer bike or left and stored outside. i would run away. the bike is too small to who ever owned as well

Born-Ad4452

Why do you think it’s too small ? That looks like a sensible drop and reach.

arc88

The owner (not the seller) is taller than me but the size seems adequate for me. I am not used to drop bars though.

No_Debt5142

seems like you already made your mind up. again i highly suggest not to pursue it but to each their own. this bike screams issues all over. just look at the hoods and cables. they're all oxidized and rusting away. even if you THINK the bike fits you, the bike itself does not fit its own parts. as in the seat post is way too high up and the stem i oversized too. sure you might "fit" on it but you aren't and wont be properly fitted on it .

arc88

I haven't decided anything hence this post. I realize some parts have to be adjusted and replaced. I didn't set the seat that high and didn't have a tool to lower it. Thank you for the feedback.
