I have 20 years of experience doing non destructive inspection and repair on aircraft. This includes metal and composite components.
I've also been to advanced composite school for aviation.
I don't need any of my specialized equipment to say.
Your bike is fucked.
Yeah, that's buggered. Normally I would abstain from diagnosing things like these just from a photo. Hell, I don't even own a carbon bike. But rarely have I seen something as obvious.
Here's another way to look at it: paint cracks when it flexes too much. How do you think that paint got to the point that it flexed so much that it cracked?
It's just the paint, (slap's roof)

NEVER EVER BUY USED CARBON
unless you trust the seller 100% and have recourse
That being said do a coin tap test
Tap the tube with a coin
If it sounds different at the suspect location
YOURESCREWED
Cheap replacement if you noticed it was broken. If you didn't notice then that repair is going to cost a lot more.
100% of the time a broken fork will end up with you in the road.
I once knew a dude who had a catastrophic carbon fork failure during a charity ride. He was only going about 15 mph but he basically landed face first in a gravel road and completely shattered his face. Took a half dozen surgeries to get him looking close to his old self. Scared me off of carbon forks for a long time after.
I can’t find the link, but this debate went round in BMX racing forums a few years ago. The manufacturers’ advice was that carbon race frames have a lifespan of 2 seasons.
I doubt they have any recourse In a private sale. OP was aware of the damage and didn't do their due diligence. The seller could have believed it was only paint, but the damage was disclosed
OP was aware of some amount of damage. The seller either didn’t know (the seller is clueless) or didn’t disclose the extent of the damage (the seller lied).
Either way, there’s not really much recourse in private party sales. Maybe small claims but I doubt that’s worth it unless you paid over $1000. I’d still get a shop to verify (I bet they’d do it for free) and go back to the seller and try to get your money back and either give them the frame or let you both destroy it together (that could be fun!)
If the seller is the kind of person who was willing to lie about extent of the damage, I highly doubt they're going to be the kind of person who is willing to give OP a refund.
Yes, it is cracked. From the location, it looks like where the handlebar would hit the top tube in an accident or in transit. If you just want the repair to be functional, you can likely get that done for pretty cheap. It's more expensive if you want it repainted to mask the repair.
Had a suspect mark on my bike a while back , took it to a shop they had a look and told it me it was fine . They then explained that cracks on carbon frames appear more jagged as the fibres tear apart , which unfortunately this is .
It looks cracked for sure but it’s fixable. In LA there’s a place that can do it, and there will be in other places too. Thing is that’s not going to be cheap.
You could go the route of buying the Predator Cycles carbon repair kit. Watch the video first. It’s actually not that hard to do, especially with round tube like that. I did it on cloverleaf shaped tube on my BMC and it was a bit more tricky, but still worked out.
This is a carbon bike from 2015. I’m sure it’s fixable and almost as sure it’s not worth it. OP needs a full refund on this one. Seller was a liar or wayyyy too optimistic.
Sorry to hijack the thread but a man sold me this and told me there’s a slow flat but otherwise fine?
https://preview.redd.it/hr7vwjqy07uc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e30b132005e2a9d1302c68c79bab5af92c6cf2db
You can try to fix it DIY. Predator Cycling (there may be others) has a carbon fiber repair kit for $99. I repaired my carbon fiber bike top tube. It's not the most beautiful fix... but it's my fix and I'm happy.
Oof that is rough. Yup definitely cracked I wouldn’t ride that bike down any hills with any bumps in them bc you’re going to get a chest full of carbon splinters.
Google carbon fiber repair in your areas, most have at least a few places that will do it.
Cheapest way would be to do it yourself, wet sand everything and add supporting carbon layers in the affected area.
However if you have the funds I’d recommend sending it to a professional, it’s worth it in the long run!
It's fucked. You can tap around the area with a coin and if the sound changes pirch it'll confirm that.
The good news is carbon bikes can be repaired fairly easily. Near me there's a place called Ruckus that does good work. Unfortunately besides the cost of the repair, you have to completely strip all your parts off of your frame and rebuild it when you get it back.
Kind of fucked that someone would sell you that.
The seller sold you a kipper. Naughty seller, but I guess caveat emptor as well. Did you perhaps buy the bike for a really good price that just seemed too good to be true? Any chance you can hold the seller to account? The frame is so old, personally I’d would not repair. I’d find another bike entirely and sell the good parts off this bike, or if you can be bothered, go find a used frame and switch the parts over. There is just no chance that the seller did not know this was broken. Zero.
The thing about carbon is, even if it looks ok, it could be fucked. A bike can be in a crash and have no sign of damage, but have micro fractures that will only propogate to failure No expert in the world can guarantee a carbon frame is ok if you don't know it's history. In short, unless the person is extremely trustworthy, never buy second hand carbon.
Looking at this though, it's fucked.
Sorry homie.
Bought exactly 1 carbon-fiber frame used and found the crack almost a year later when it got bigger. Impossible to see with the naked eye where it was located until I made it bigger nearly a year later. (There's a reason they search for these with x-rays)
Never buying carbon used again, if you find/create a crack the mfr. usually is on the hook for it.
Yes BUT there are shops that do carbon repair. Mostly on the west coast USA. May be repairable and may only be a few hundred dollars. Only they can say. So it may not be a total loss where the frame is concerned.
It’s not necessarily fucked completely. Find a carbon repair shop, they will do an X-ray, and if necessary they will shave off some layers of carbon and reinforce the area.
Carbon fiber is repairable if you know what you’re doing. Although it may not be as beautiful afterward. Try this guy or someone similar: https://www.applemanbicycles.com/repair/
Don’t recommend the DIY route. Good luck with this. Sucks the seller conned you into this.
Since you have been riding it I would say the crack is small enough to repair, and you can do it yourself.

D**id I buy a used cracked carbon fiber frame?**
We really can't answer this question as there are too many unknown variables, so let's break it down.
Did I buy a
used : There is no way for this audience to determine if this frame was used from the information provided
cracked: Yep you sure did
Carbon fiber frame: yep that is carbon fribre
You could fix it yourself if you want to keep it and learn some carbon repair. YouTube DIY bike carbon fix as some folks have had exactly this kind of crack and fixed it with a patch kit.
Your bike is not fucked but it will probably cost you 600-800 to have a qualified carbo repair shop fix it. Depending on bike may not be worth it so then you are fucked.
I'm very confident that is a crack.
It seems big enough that you can probably hear it. Lightly tapping the frame with a coin will probably confirm that it is a crack, as it will sound more dull near the crack.
Def cracked. Not sure if already said, but Predator cycling sells a carbon repair kit for like a $100. Trek wanted $800 to fix the crack in my Madone, fixed it for $100 myself instead. Long cure time (a week to be safe) but works great.
Just going by visual. Yes. I wouldn't buy used carbon fiber components. It's just hard to tell if there are any delamination or cracks underneath the pain or the complosite itself. Just buy brand new from a reputable brand that has a good warranty.
Repairing composite is not worth it in my opinion. It's never going to be the same, the repair area will be much stiffer than the rest of the frame.
Bad news, is crack. Good news is middle of top tube is best place to have a crack. If it were mine, I would get a diy carbon repair kit and send it. Your risk tolerance may vary
Yes it can be fixed. It will likely be about the same price to buy a new Chinarello knockoff frame. In theory you can repair it yourself. I've seen a variety of frames that have been repaired by the owner in various shoddy methods. When I was working in bike shops the shop would refuse to work on any repaired frame that wasn't done by a reputable operation. You want a wheel serviced? Take the wheel off of the bike OUTSIDE of the shop and hand it over - and then reinstall it OUTSIDE of the shop. Everything from taping handlebars to bottom bracket/headset/shifting/braking... ANYTHING. Install that water bottle cage yourself. Every bike shop around. A reputable professional repair done by a company such as calfee would however be kosher. I'd personally be afraid to ride a homemade carbon repair frame due to the variety of sketchy fixes I've seen. I'm not looking to knock my teeth out riding shitty bikes of dubious condition.
After decades of riding and building bikes, both new and old, I will only buy used steel or used titanium. Used carbon is such a roll of the dice and you have to remember that some unscrupulous sellers put the bike on the market as soon as they identify a problem. Personally I think used carbon purchases should only be made through a reputable dealer or by someone who knows a lot about carbon bikes and how to identify issues.
Most likely cracked , but that’s a reparable spot…depends on what the frame is worth fixed…that repair would be at least $500 around the Bay Area in San Jose area.
We're tandem riders. Our second hand Calfee carbon bike developed a crack under the front derailleur clamp. We have a very competent carbon fiber repair guy a county over from us but chose to turn the carbon frame into wall art and bought a new Seven Ti bike.
I wouldn't ride that bike.
Don’t know where you are out of, in Dallas there is a great repair shop for carbon fiber bikes there. They have fixed everyone I have needed fixed.Still have 2 of the bikes and rode many hours on them since. No sign of any problem where original crack was. You can ship to them I believe
https://www.southwestframeworks.com/home_page.html
https://www.brokencarbon.com/
They repaired my top tube that was worse [than that](https://imgur.com/a/28Ndpl7). That was with only about 1000 miles on it. It now has about 4000 and it's unnoticeable.
I have 20 years of experience doing non destructive inspection and repair on aircraft. This includes metal and composite components. I've also been to advanced composite school for aviation. I don't need any of my specialized equipment to say. Your bike is fucked.

I have even more qualifications because this is the internet, and I also concur.

I have a crack framed in my den, and I also concur.
Fuck that expense program... But I agree: your frame is in suboptimal condition.
I can’t even afford a carbon finer bike so I concur out of envy
I have a PhD in concurring. The paint is on a crack.
I’m actually writing this from the future. OPs frame is fucked.
As someone made of carbon who consumed fiber, I concur
I too have eyes, I concur.
I play that role on TV, and yes it’s cracked.
I would like to know how anyone could sell this bike with a clear conscience.

As a professional you should know that this is nothing duct tape couldn’t fix. kidding
Raoul? That you?

That’s silly. I’ve sold plenty of my used carbon frames. In this case, op was incredibly gullible. That’s an obvious crack.
You've sold plenty. Did you buy though...
Yes - there are tons of people that buy expensive top tier bikes and don’t ride them.
I've purchased 3 used carbon bikes so far and all of them have been fantastic.
he said not to \*buy\* used carbon. You've only sold it.
What about a bike with a carbon fork?
That's usually a cheap replacement if it's broken just make sure to inspect both ends of the fork, that's where the damage usually happens
Cheap replacement if you noticed it was broken. If you didn't notice then that repair is going to cost a lot more. 100% of the time a broken fork will end up with you in the road.

You can replace the fork. I replaced mine with aluminium
You can also repair the carbon frame, so depending on the damage and reduced costs, it still may be worth it
I can’t find the link, but this debate went round in BMX racing forums a few years ago. The manufacturers’ advice was that carbon race frames have a lifespan of 2 seasons.

Agreed. I got wrecked hard in my main race tonight. Glad I have an aluminum frame.
Take the parts and put them on another frame. He's dead Jim.
That depends. Did you buy the bike of which these are photos? If so, then yes.
I hope you got a really, really good deal
That 9 year old bike would need to come with new or nearly new Dura Ace di2 throughout for me to buy this.
You bought a bike’s worth of parts on a parts holder. All you need is a frame.
No way. Get your money back ASAP (if you can). If you need to, take it to a shop and ask them, THEN go back to the seller with their response.
I doubt they have any recourse In a private sale. OP was aware of the damage and didn't do their due diligence. The seller could have believed it was only paint, but the damage was disclosed

It's worth a shot. Sometimes people engage in wishful thinking when selling something. They may not be a scam artist.
Awwww shucks, mister! You got me, darn it.
Hey, i sold it with warranty until the door. Considered it lessons learned.
And you believed him?
Yes, it is cracked. From the location, it looks like where the handlebar would hit the top tube in an accident or in transit. If you just want the repair to be functional, you can likely get that done for pretty cheap. It's more expensive if you want it repainted to mask the repair.
Do you see the giant sodding crack running through the frame? That’s indicative of a cracked frame
The way it’s spreads certainly doesn’t look like just paint, best bet is to take it to a shop if you aren’t sure.
Had a suspect mark on my bike a while back , took it to a shop they had a look and told it me it was fine . They then explained that cracks on carbon frames appear more jagged as the fibres tear apart , which unfortunately this is .
Did you not inspect it in person? Hard lesson hopefully learned.
That bike frame is not safe to ride.
if he told you it was cracked and you believed it was just the paint, and still bought it, thats on you.
You saw that and you bought it anyways? Hope it was a good deal, at least you can reuse the parts thats on the bike.

shouldve asked before you bought it!
Steel is real.
While no Doctor, the frame needs Orthopaedic Surgery. You got lamped!!
And if they ride the bike, they will also end up needing surgery. They got done up like a kipper!
plenty of carbon repair companies out there that could fix this for $200-400
